It's hard to find a copy of Muscle of Love that isn't squashed, either. And Schools Out often gets banged up, too. Alice Cooper liked to give ya something extra in album cover design, which is great, but hard to store properly.

I totally agree on that Concert for Bangladesh. I still don't own a copy because they are always trashed. I have even found it multiple times without the box. The others that I find trashed all the time are all the KISS albums. It is rare to find them in great condition. I don't think I have ever seen a 70s KiSS album in the shrink. Great video. @@RobertFithen Y'know come to think of it, I've never seen used copies of "All Things Must Pass" anywhere, I've only seen it new here and there (I only have it on CD). The only used/early copy I've ever seen is the one my grandpa has which is in pretty good condition, all his records are well taken care of. I've only seen "Concert for Bangladesh" once which was in like, ok condition, but the store wanted 40 bucks and I didn't wanna dish out all that money on top of what I was already buying so I passed on it.

Loved the video! There's also "Foghat Live" with the die-cut cover that's usually beat-up. Plus, a legendary Argentine record from 1973, "Artaud" by Pescado Rabioso, released on a shaped cover, an irregular octagon, where most owners/sellers cut off the edges in order to fit on the shelves. With regard shiny vinyls that sound like a frying pan, some sellers use polishers to make 'em look like new, yet there's heaps of surface noise left.

Hey Robert. I think you’ve talked about it before, but the biggest thing that causes damage to my collection… Cats. I really had to take some drastic measures. I had one that just liked to use my collection for scratching, and I didn’t figure it out right away. As far as personally, it seems like my Alice Cooper records really took a beating. Have a good weekend, thanks for the video.

Well you just made me feel REAL good about the copy of Concert For Bangladesh I spotted last Record Store Day & snagged along with my RSD picks; the box is in absolutely beautiful, near pristine shape! I’m not sure exactly how old this copy is but it’s definitely not any sort of modern reissue, the paper inner sleeves were slightly yellowed with age and the records are in automatic sequencing (side 1 backed by side 6 on disc One, side 2 with side 5 on disc Two and sides 3 &4 listed as disc 3, for use with those old automatic record changers that just dropped the discs down on top of each other because vinyl records are so famously impervious to damage)

Nice video bud. It took me many years to find a NM copy of Cosmo’s Factory they’re almost always knackered! Kiss albums are usually quite beat up too. The Who Live at Leeds is very fragile - as is New Order Low Life you very rarely see that onion skin outer in great condition. @@RobertFithen I have 4 of the 6 versions of In through the Out Door and 3 have the outer brown bag - and one does not, but I bought it anyway as it’s an Argentinian pressing of ‘version A’ which I thought was cool. I am still looking for versions ‘C’ and ‘E’ - hopefully with the outer bag! Also only one of my inner sleeves has been ‘coloured in’ but the others are untouched, so that’s also kinda cool to see what it looks like. The last vinyl resurgence in like the mid 00s my dad was able to get one for a steal that was mint. No ripped cardboard, not even the inner piece, no crinkles or wrinkles. Even then it was super flimsy, its no suprise that 99% were destroyed in 5 minutes. He was able to sell it for big money but wish he still had it. Another beatles one is its pretty hard to find a magicak mystery tour with a completely intact booklet. Most had horible binding and pulled away from the spine even when relatively new. Also the dee-jay songs, pictures, and stories version of introducing the Beatles is hard to find not destroyed because of the book cover effect.

I have an OG copy of Something Else by The Kinks I bought used that had a split along the spine that the previous owner "repaired" using duct tape. And I picked up in an antique store an OG copy of Jerry Garcia's debut solo with the wax in VG+ condition, but the cover is so badly water damaged I added an index card with the track listening because the cover is unreadable, lol. Sometimes I think people were just too stoned to think about how they took care or their records. A lot of gatefolds were so worn out because that's what we used to screen the stems and seeds out.

Many, Many Rock ‘n Roll and R&B albums of the 50s & 60’s have the values they do simply due to the audience they were for. Lots of them went to slumber parties, dance parties, after-prom parties, sweet sixteen parties, birthday parties, my-mom-and-dad-are-out-until-late parties….you get my drift. Later the punk and metal albums suffered much the same way. There are reasons for the Discogs values, folks!

My Alice Cooper "Billion Dollar Babies" is pretty rough. The front part of the gate-fold (at least on my copy) is very thin and as a result the spine is trashed. This one did get a lot of play when I was in my teens so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Led Zeppelin s/t is really trashed too. Again, played to death in my teens. I find more often than not, at least where I live old Beatles records are like this. I rarely see an old Beatles record from like the 60's or 70's which doesn't have ring wear, scuffs, a name written on it or like someone drew on the cover. Recently saw "The Beatles Second Album" for a decent price but it was like being held together in places by scotch tape and stuff. The worst offender is the White Album, those covers did _not_ age well at all. In fact, there's a guy who runs an art exhibition called "we buy White Albums" which is really interesting. Even used Beatles CD's can be sketchy sometimes, I once saw "Magical Mystery Tour" for sale, no cover in the jewel case, just the disc inside, and it was being sold for like 15 bucks. A lot of R&B/funk/disco records are also in terrible or badly worn condition. I once saw a Tower of Power record where the front cover was almost half white due to how scuffed and worn out it was, which is a shame cause it's a great record. I can deal with records that have some ring wear or show their age. It's when they feel grimy in your hands, or reek of cigarette smoke and nicotine that I avoid them at all costs. Somewhat relating to this, have you ever noticed used records having a distinct smell? Like a lot of older used records and the insides of used record stores have this _really_ distinct smell that I never smell anywhere else. Do you know what causes it? This has been stumping me like for ages.

Oh definitely early Sabbath albums with the all green label. Good luck. Good chance the 2nd press with Burbank labels might be in better shape. And im sure there's plenty 3rd press with the lined label in excellent shape. Another bad one is Wings Over America. Good chance 1 of the 3 albums is shot, but the other 2 are damn near mint. And sometimes takes multiple copies to make a mint version. Muscle Of Love is one of those pet peeve things. Sometimes i see them for sale without the box. Found one in the 90s, but the box was trashed. Didn't matter as the album was in great shape. Pretty sure collectors may stuff cardboard in the box to keep its original shape. The Fabulous Johnny Cash is one i never found a good copy of. Unless it was a brand new pressing. Good luck finding an old 6 eye of that. Or even a cover that dont look like its been on tour. And another in the good luck department. The silver pressing of Rock And Roll Machine by Triumph. Whos brilliant idea was that to make it look metal. Pretty sure you will never find a copy that looks like that sheen of a teenager with lots of oil on their face. That is definitely an album you have to wear clean welders gloves. Just to get it from cover to turntable. I wouldn't be surprised if a sealed copy is destroyed before you even crack it open. Pet Sounds always looks like its been to some party where Joe took Sue's copy home, and somehow Sue has Mike's copy in her sleeve. Because Mike's album cover got its spine slaughtered by his 2 cats.

I wonder how those bags have held up over the decades? Did a lot of people take care to not damage the paper bag? Or do I have a rare exception?

I rarely see it with the paper bag still on it.

I have also seen the electrical tape on albums. Honestly. I can't think of an album that I've only seen trashed copies of that stand out to me. I can think of an album that I've always seen in mint condition. Foe me it's Tubular Bells.

Took me many tries to get a half-way decent copy of Neil youngs Harvest. Also any early AC/DC records in good condition.

I mentioned in an earlier video how I have two copies of "Harvest" because I have to play side 1 from one and side 2 on the other because of the conditions of the records.

Even in the 90s, when most vinyl was still in good shape, KISS albums were always trashed and missing posters, rub on, paper gun etc

First Ash Ra Tempel is also hard to find in good condition with its split cover. Managed to get a decent cover albeit worn and slightly torn. Also Let It Be original bokset is hard to find in good condition. That one was definitely not the most solid.

All things that Pass is hard to find without cover ruined and some of the early Beatles albums produced by capital records. Meet the Beatles. I agree with the monkees album covers and records they seem to take a beating. KISS Alive is getting that way. Have a great day

Virtually all old Beatles Capitol albums are in bad or worn-out shape. I recently found an early Capitol copy of "Rubber Soul" where the seams on the bottom and the side were split and the record fell right out when I picked it up from the crate. And they wanted like 10 bucks for it too. And this isn't the only offender, most old Beatles records have names written on them, ring wear, the records are very scratched, some came from smokers houses, etc. Even like Beatles solo records are often in iffy condition. I once saw John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band where it looked like someone stuck a piece of tape on the cover and then ripped it off. Yet the majority of the other records in the store were just fine. I even found some really great deals there.

Holy Moly young fella, looks like you come out the worst in a scrap.... I grew up on that James Brown live at the Apollo album Robert. I used to practice my spins, splitz and James Brown routine to it. I could never find a copy of it in any condition in the wild the last couple of decades so I bought a repress of it a couple of years ago. Yeah early Stones got played to death Robert. I'm a Stones collector and yes it seems Stones fans beat up their records more that Beatle fans do.... Mahogany Rush Live is one I never see without a ton of ringwear.

Bought "Muscle of Love" by Alice Cooper new, 1973. Warner marketing designed the cover as a flimsy cardboard box. I take care of my toys, but this one looks sad. Bought "Thick as a Brick" by Jethro Tull when it came out, 1972. Cover designed like a newspaper. Over time the paper has aged to a brownish white.

The #1 album I absolutely cannot find in decent condition is the mono version of the first Doors album. The Doors in mono isn't very common to begin with but I've seen quite a few copies and every single one has been beat to shit. The Doors in stereo is often in good or even excellent condition, but I guess all the acid party freak out dudes who were too tripped out to properly care for records must've been the ones buying up the mono copies...or the kiddies.

When records came on the scene they were a novelty did record buying public actually have cleaning fluid and a brush I think NOT listening to them in their spare time while many brought their faves to parties probably mishandled the wrong way fingerprints etc and drunk I bet there was a small majority who took collecting records seriously if you were an audiophile; early beatles dc5 sinatra or even those exotica selections can be really chewed up. Lucky to find a playable James Gang live record. Depended on person how much importance he/she placed on this piece of musical history. To clean or not to clean
