Data error cyclic redundancy check on an external hard drive is common while trying to access a drive on a PC. But what is a Cyclic Redundancy Check? Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is a simple data verification method that your Windows system uses to check the accuracy of data on different storage devices such as hard drives, CDs, DVDs, and USB Drives.
In general, the Cyclic Redundancy Check error occurs when CRC fails to verify the data due to accidental changes to the RAW data on the hard drive. Although, several other factors can also trigger this error including registry corruption, a cluttered hard disk, an unsuccessful program installation, misconfigured files, etc.

All 3 methods are failed to recover my data. Cyclic redundancy check, raw drive, bad sector are still there. The cost of fixing my external driver is 4 times that of the driver itself.

Started with no 1 - it started reading then when it got to 160,it started showing unable to read files A1,then went to next line unable to read file A2 & so on. I moved to step 3,went on tools scanning and repairing is just there not moving or doing anything. It's an external drive,I just moved stuffs from my system to a particular folder refused to open.

Please I need someone to help me resolve the issue below. I have two hdd drives (not my main OS drives) 1TB and 500gb I want to use the 500gb as external backup and the 1TB as internal, but when I connect the 500gb to my external case, it doesn’t work ( shows as allocated and not even recognized when I use diskpart. Also shows as not initialized under disk management ) and when I try to initialize it, it shows cyclic redundancy check. But when I connect directly as internal disk, everything works 100%. I thought the external case was the problem then I decided to put the 1TB on the external case and it works 100% well ( both as internal and external) and I don’t want it to be as external. Please can someone help me identify the issue here ?

Well slight issue I tried the 1st method on my nvme drive (the boot drive) and before I restarted my pc, it started throwing windows errors at me. Upon a restart it decided to remove some sort of boot files and would no longer load windows Not fun

What if you have a crc error on an external HDD that has not yet been initialized? It currently does not have a drive letter assigned to it as windows cannot yet "see" the drive. CHKDSK will not work as there is no assigned drive letter ...

Restart your pc with the drive connected, if it doesn't work, restart the pc without the drive then reconnect it.

I get a CRC on my external hard drive when I try to access it through file explorer. The strange thing is though that all my other software (Photoshop, PDF reader etc) CAN access the hard drive with no problems ... Which, to me, means that there is NOTHING wrong with my hard drive. This has been happening consistently since the latest Windows update ... I do wish that Microsoft could, for once, deliver an update that doesn't screw things up at random.

@@sajiballinoneexpress1695 i fixed it by booting with hirens usb. I ran chkdsk, used some of the disk utilities to check bad sectors and then I was able to partition and format the drive with the disk management tool all from hirens usb. Give it a try. It might work for you too.

I also tried connecting it to another pc and had the same issue. The disk is spinning however and even the pc says it's a healthy unit the works fine...it is just marked as uknown :(.

I tried to use Wondershare Recoverit but because my external disk doesn't have a letter so it cannot do anything not even scan that disk, If I try to image it that won't be possible since its storage has almost 2T while my whole pc storage has only almost 800gb, now If I could put a letter on the disk I would but whenever I try to initialize it through disk management then it show me the Cyclic Redundancy Check Error and won't let me do anything about it. I tried following this video to fix that Redundancy Check Error but nothing worked... Also windows explorer doesn't show me the external disk because it doesn't have a letter so I can't access it at all... any other suggestions that may help?

My HDD is not showing up in the file explorer. When I go to the Disk Management, it tells me to 'Initialize the disk'. And when I Initialiaze the disk it shows "Data Error- Cyclic Redundancy Check". When I tried CheckDisk, I typed disk letter which was previously assigned, it tells "Cannot open volume for direct access". But how could I type any drive letter for chkdsk if drive does not show up in the file explorer in the first place? How to tackle with such problem? I cannot lost the data at any cost. I want access to my data. Please someone help!

not great for me. I already went down this road and diskpart too with clean etc .. 'clean' took ages to run and returned error: data error CRC see system event log for more information. Might have guessed it was an advert for software.

Great! But I don't see my hard drive in file explorer nor can I find it with command prompt. When I open Disk Management however, the hard drive shows with a little red arrow. It says it is uninitialised and unallocated. When I right-click to reveal the Initialise option, the option is greyed out. As mentioned before, CHKDSK does not find the external. Another thing to mention, the drive appears in Device Manager. Only place it doesn't appear is File Explorer.

What can be done if the drive isn't visible in File Explorer and has no visible drive letter associated with it? The only way I can see my external drive is by opening Disk Manager and attempting to initialize the drive. However, initialization runs into this CRD error.

So I did repair number 1 and it says "Cannot Open volume for direct access". I did repair number 2 and it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them". However the problem still exists and I am still getting the cyclic redundancy error. Any more ideas please?

So I have a similar problem to what you're trying to fix but with mine, the external hard drive doesnt show on this pc for file transfer to be possible. But it shows that it has been detected by the machine when i go to device manager, disk manager, even cmd, but with cmd, it shows the size as 0bits. I'm so freaking out right now...

Hi there, thank you for your question! Make sure your drive is allocated in the Disk Management window. To check this, press Win + X and select Disk Management. Find your external hard drive from the list, right-click on it, and select Change Drive Letter and Paths. Assign a drive letter to your hard drive if it doesn’t have one. Make sure the drivers are all up to date for the drive.

Hi there, thank you for your question! Start by going to device manager and then expand the disk drives tab then right click on the driver and enable the drive. If you see the drive there but it has no letter right click on it and select change drive letter and assign a new letter.

For the CHKDSK utility, I used the command prompt and had followed the steps. At the end, I got this message on the CMD 698864 files processed. File data verification completed. Phase duration (User file recovery): 1.07 hours. An unspecified error occurred (75736e6a726e6c2e 500). C:\Windows\system32> Help?

I am also follow the step 1 but it takes more than 2 hours . It seems chkdsk d: /f /r / x fixes my drive d not my pendrive which is drive f. Please help
