In this video, I show you how to make a modern pop country song, aka BRO COUNTRY. I walk through the arrangement and writing techniques used, from a heavy reliance on pentatonic minor and cookie-cutter song structure to more obscure harmonies and techniques.
I hate to be negative, and I don’t want to dismiss this genre outright. But you can’t like everything, and this genre just rubs me the wrong way for reasons that may become obvious in the video. That doesn’t mean it’s bad music though- you like what you like. There’s lots of “good music” in the jazz realm that I can not stand listening to, that doesn’t negate it. Similarly, there’s lots of simple pop that I enjoy regardless of its basic nature.
But even though I don’t believe in good music or bad music, I still believe in good natured criticism, and hopefully this video gets the point across- the genre is very easy to write. I believed that before going into this video and wasn’t sure how successful I’d be at recreating this genre, but now that it’s done I give myself a B+
I must say this isn’t my first crack at a writing a country song. A little while back, I produced and wrote a song with a local artist named Cara Jeanne, and we were aiming for a more mature version of a Taylor Swift song before she went full pop mode. If you’d like to hear that song, you can find it here: • Ain't a Love Song
I actually encourage you to do this sort of thing. It is a great way to build your skills and experience. As a modern professional composer, you don’t always have the luxury of writing in genres you like, so going way outside of your tastes like this is a surefire way to grow and evolve.
To expand on what happened with my harmonies- when It was only a parallel third, I liked it. But when I added in 6ths, it worked, but I felt it could be more interesting. Instead, I had the harmonies during the 2nd and 3rd choruses outline little bits of each chord tone as they tried their best to maintain a parallel motion. It didn't always work and I still don't like how they're mixed but it does add an incredible amount of interest to an otherwise simple pentatonic melody.

Also the lyrics don't mention he's driving drunk while stalking his exgirlfriend and his drivers license is suspended. Also siphoning fuel from her new boyfriend's nicer truck so he can continue stalking them. And he got fired from Cabella's for stealing fishing tackle. It's a lot of small details, might have to be a whole different song on the album.

@@beezertwelvewashingbeard8703 Those are some nice lyrical ideas! Maybe we could turn this into a pickup truck/drunk/down-on-your-luck-themed concept album with him running his truck into a utility pole in a drunken stupor, getting patched up at the emergency room, which he's not going to be able to afford because he forgot to sign up for the Cobra plan when Cabella's sacked him--and not being able to buy any more booze. So now to get drunk he ends up having to filter rubbing alcohol through three pieces of burnt toast he found in the dumpster out behind the Waffle House--no, the Huddle House...

I love what Jake's done here. I've had a similar experience myself, though with a slightly different outcome. I grew up listening to rave music. When "brostep"-style dubstep blew up in the early 2010s, I was bitter that what I thought was trendy, screechy garbage was getting so much spotlight. One day, I had an epiphany that as much as I disliked dubstep, if I had to produce it myself I'd have no clue where to start. I quickly found that I was really bad at it. The sound design involved was far more technical than the genres I was used to making. That moment was a real eye-opener for me, and I've been far more willing to find the good in genres I don't immediately care for since then.

Lacks feel and musicality... So? So what? This was obviously an experiment. Experimenting is not about feel or musicality. It's just about trying to expand your borders or trying to figure out something new. At some point you just figure out "the thing of the genre" and start making new music with feel and musicality. I'm from Finland, and it seems that I know country music better than this guy from US knows. But he knows country music well enough to write a song in that style. I loved this video absolutely! I'm an all-around musician (like this one seems to be). I can play end even write music in almost any genre (studied all the classical theories also...), but I'm not writing brilliant r'n'b (or classical or...) for example. Technically I could, but... It lacks feel and musicality. I don't care! It's just experimenting with something that I don't really know, but trying to understand some new language. And trying to add something new to my vocabulary.

I'm not American so I had no idea who Luke Bryan was before this. Just checked him out (the Hunting, fishing, loving song) and burst laughing because it really was so unimaginative and cliché as anything can get musically and intellectually. He's just throwing into the lyrics as many stereo type hook words as he possibly can, because he's actually fi$hing but not for fi$h. Embarrassing if you ask me. And I actually mostly live in my cottage house on an island, fishing, trapping, loving my wife and playing my guitar, haha.

@@RobbyGAMEZ You know Steve Earle? His son Justin Townes Earle did a very long radio interview on his own path in music, including of course a long stint in Nashville. He didn't find the experience helpful for his kind of traditional country and this was about 8 years ago. Wrapping up the show, he was asked if he had any advice for beginning country artists. "Yeah, don't go to Nashville." Then he described New Country as "Bon Jovi with a pedal steel." LOL. Dead on description and that's being kind.

It's sad too because there is some really really good country but it seems like sometime Durring the 90s everyone agreed that we should completely ruin southern rock, country, blues and bluegrass all together. Like go and listen to some classic Waylon or Hank sir, or someone like willie. Then adventure into the less famous, listen to the bluegrass coming out in the 50s. Why did this happen? Not every genre had such a noticeable decline into pop music. It's even sadder as a southern man to see guys eat it up and love it because they think they're suppose to like this new country. They think "I'm southern and this is southern music" meanwhile nothing about the modern music has anything to do with the music from the south. The South usa with all its faults at one time was the center of the best and most emotional music. Idk I'm ranting again. I'm off my rocker.

Bilb Ono It happened when Garth Brooks hit. Brooks, who was into Kiss, Boston, Journey and the AOR sound brought the arena rock vibe to country music. With the rise in grunge and rap, and the decline of good old fashioned rock and roll, all the wannabe rocker L.A. studio musicians moved to Nashville because that's where the money and girls went. So much modern country sounds like terrible 80s rock with a fiddle and a banjo because of sellout rockers and dumb girls.
