This is definitely Chad's best drums on the studio album, especially live. It's so powerful and fits in well with everything else at the same time.

There's no way possible the live Chad Smith and the studio Chad Smith are the same human beings. The contrast between those two playing styles, one very reserved and keeping a beat for the song and the other a complete wild man who adds some guitars and vocals to his 2 hour drum solo is not possible.

It is because of Rick Rubin. His style is making the record as clean and simple as possible.

As the other guy said, Rick Rubin won't let him go wild in the studio, tells Chad to save it for the live show. Chad said they butted heads early on (years ago) about this but in the end agreed and said Rick was right... However I think he's wrong. Haha

I’ve never been a fan of Chad smith in a live setting. Way too busy for my taste. My feeling is the producer has to rein him in in the studio. All that would be way too busy on record. All that said, Chad is obviously an unbelievable drummer.
