Hi Brett McCoy here. I forgot to include more detail. I made the mask back in High School welding class 2014. This has been sitting in my basement ever since! I do have pictures of how the whole thing was made. I never heat treated it or anything by I did get an A in class! My design was based off of a carboard cutout of an Army of Two mask from the game series. I planned to put some type of glass in the eye holes to stop from funneling rounds into the wearer's eyes but never got around to it. It also really was not practical to wear and would probably slam all the force directly into the wearer's chin. I ran into a bunch of issues with sizing and ended up having to redo the eye holes and put in extra metal to close up gaps but I don't think it did to shabby.

This is the second time we've had chainmail on this channel and as cool as this stuff looked, it was, again, butted mail. That stuff is basically for costume purposes only, it can't stop a significant hit from pretty much anything, especially made from copper, you could probably break through that with your bare hands. Would be interesting if Matt got some real steel riveted or welded mail armour and tested _that_ out (perhaps even with a historical gamebson beneath it but that might be expecting a little much) against modern guns. Funnily enough, the reason chainmail was eventually abandoned in favor of plate steel was because of the advent of early firearms: while plate steel could stop them, a musket ball hitting chainmail would cause the links to shatter and basically turn eash shot into a mini frag grenade when it hit you, sending bits of sharp, broken steel into your body along with the bigass lump of lead shot. Seeing just how poorly things would go against modern firearms would be interesting.
@joost1120
@joost1120 2 жыл бұрын
That isn't why mail was abandoned... Mail fell out of popularity much earlier than the advent of firearms. Mail is just very expensive to make compared to plate. The plague in 1350 killed a significant portion of the workforce, and mail became even more expensive to make. At the same time, water powered hammers came into use, which drove costs for plate armour down. A breastplate could be made within 6 hours. A mail hauberk or haubergeon will take 20 to 30 times as many hours. Mail is also less protective against thrusts, which are one of the primary dangers on the battlefield (missiles and lances). Mail relies on stopping the attack, rather than deflecting it like breastplates do. Breastplates also allowed the fitting of a lance rest, which drastically increased the power of shock cavalry. The combination of all these things caused mail to fell out of favor. It was still used to protect areas that couldn't be protected by plate for another hundred years though.
@sebastianriz4703

@@joost1120 Wasn't main the cheaper option actually? Like it was possible for common soldiers to buy chainmail because full plate armor was VERY expensive? Chainmail wasnt the cheapest option for armor but it wasn't that expensive. But yes, firearms were most of reason why old armor was phased out.

Chainmail is to stop slashing, contrary to what you see in pop culture films it had gambeson (thick tightly woven fabric) underneath to help dissipate blunt force. So whilst I don't think copper would make for a good chain mail (it was the bronze age, the tin was added for a reason) I don't think it's quite as ineffective as shown

7:45 "we're gonna hit [the chainmail] with a couple of blunt things because that's what chain mail is actually for" Oh god, I can already hear Shad screaming in the distance xD (for those that don't know: chain mail, being flexible, offers exactly zero protection against blunt weapons. It's also pretty bad against piercing, but it has fantastic slashing protection (in Matt's demonstration not so much against the thrown axe, but this is also just copper mail and thus rather soft). Historically, you'd normally combine chain mail with a gambeson or other type of cloth armor. Combined, you get pretty good protection against all types of attacks, though of course not as good as plate armor. For example, arrows will get blunted when hitting the mail, thus being subsequently unable to pierce the cloth, whereas arrows could pierce both armor types on their own with ease. Tod's Workshop has good videos on the topic)

@LabRat Knatz it was actually made by a fan, not some company, so it was in fact quite the effort. However, the creator* responded to some other comment claiming he doesn't mind the destruction, as he didn't really have a use for the mail after he was done with it. *I, of course, have no way of verifying if that was actually the maker of the shirt or just an imposter. That being said, if you send something to Matt and tell him to test it's effectiveness as armor, you shouldn't be surprised if it gets obliterated. So whether or not that guy really was the guy who made the mail, the creator likely did expect this outcome.

True without some sort of padding the rings would just dig in to you. That however is nowhere close to proper mail. Copper is very soft and easily punctured by something like the tomahawk so it’s not the right material. Material choice aside it should still be able to turn a blade and prevent cuts. I think its biggest weakness is that it is likely butted mail, where the ring is just pinched together, nowhere near functional and can be ripped apart with your hands. Real mail would be made of flatter rings with the rings alternating between being a solid ring and one that is riveted together so lighter and much stronger.

@@nollie_ollie8358 To be fair, I did it for business reasons. The entire situation was pretty nuts actually. Basically, the military got a hold of the armor, did some testing, it failed *all* of their adverse conditions tests (temp test, chemical test a couple others, conditions they expect the average armor to experience) so they passed that around and told soldiers that the armor failed their tests. The company that made dragonscale got a hold of this and decided to go to the press and talk about how the military designed tests to make their armor fail. Then, in retaliation the army released the test results that showed not only had they done a more than fair test, the armor was dangerous for civilian use. They also at that point changed internal rules to prevent soldiers from using non-certified armor. Then, for some strange reason, the company that made dragonscale was sold three times within the next 2 years and from what I can tell, the patent was allowed to expire.

Is it "sealant" or closer to "thermal paint" for roofing? Personally haven't played with that specifically, but I did have a guy try to use buckets of thermal paint as cheap caulking for nails. Might have worked if it had been applied like paint, but didn't do chit when dabbed like caulking. I make the comparison because the thermal stuff seemed more like slightly thick latex paint rather than a "sealant" of any kind. Regardless, that stuff seemed like more of the outer coat on a hard plate armor. Might have caught some extra particles but not stopping squat. Might have been a good material for a top coat on the mask?
@roblewis7354
@roblewis7354 2 жыл бұрын
@@outcast170 I guess that depends how you use it. It’s sold as a sealant and actually some places consider a coating a new roof.. I rarely ever use them because I really don’t have any faith. I’ve used them and had success on a low scale. But I think if it was thick enough in between hard layers it could be effect in stopping catch the broken bullet.

@@robertsears8323 it has worked for hundreds of years. Just because wearing the particular vest in the video would be worse than wearing nothing because it is dead weight for no protection does not mean chain mail does not work. That copper “mail” can be ripped apart by hand because the links are simply pinched together. Real mail would have been made out of iron or steel, using alternating flatter solid and riveted rings so lighter and much stronger. Real mail prevents cutting, therefore it is effective armour even to this day. Yes you are still vulnerable to blunt force and things that have a particularly vicious point and obviously bullets but it would still be more protective in a modern knife attack than anything we have today. Yes you are not invulnerable even in real mail, but no armour makes you invulnerable. Is a plate carrier useless because you can be shot in the head?

Problem with ringmail is they dont have any resistance to impact injury, due to their extreme flexibility. Sure that dull broadsword didnt slice through the ringmail, but the death by internal bleeding when your organs rupture and go into shock will still get you. There isnt a weave or material you can make it out of and survive the concussive impact of even a 308 round.
@joost1120
@joost1120 2 жыл бұрын
@@wendiplays Bruh a sword isn't going to rupture your organs. Mail is flexible, but vastly less flexible than normal fabric. It will definitely take some of the punch out of it. Not to mention you're likely not going to be wearing mail on it's own. You're likely wearing some form of textile armour over the mail, which will distribute the force over a much larger area. You'll be fine. If you don't believe me, just take a look at any medievel reenactment. Those swords are blunt, but still carry the same energy as a sharp one. In fact, they're generally a fair bit heavier. Reenactors would be dead if their organs ruptured upon being hit.

It's not only foolish on your part, it's futile. If your ego is that fragile, go see a therapist. The point wasn't whether or not it worked. The maker knew it wouldn't. He said as much in the other comment thread you ... Interestingly didn't respond to thereafter. 🤔 the point that everyone else who replied to you, has tried to make, is that he took his time to make it entirely by hand. Even if it means nothing to you, labor pays peoples bills. And labor done in one's free time, specifically that which takes any notable amount or sort of time and effort/focus/determination/motivation, is worth commending given the fact that most people don't. It's extraordinary to see something handcrafted by a singular normal person in the day of automation and rampant consumerism. Just because you can't or are too lazy to do anything worthwhile, or maybe just bitter that you perhaps made an entry that wasn't accepted... Doesn't make it at all rational to attempt to tear someone else down. Tl;Dr you're a sad egotistical person who should go seek help instead of gloating over something trivial and that has no real relevance to you, on the internet, before you just so happen to aggravate the wrong person and get more than you bargain for. DISCLAIMER: this is in no way a threat, nor implication of ill-will or any intent whatsoever to perform any illegal behavior. It's a warning not to be an ass on the internet in the age OF the internet. Where, as previously stated- just about anyone can find you pretty easily and quickly, if they want to bad enough.
