On the surface, Sony's new 24mm, 40mm, and 50mm lenses appear redundant and more expensive than their budget options. Here's why they may actually be a great choice for filmmakers looking for affordable lenses.

These lenses are far from redundant as they change the ergonomics and useability of the a6xxx and the a7c. For us who love the small, discreet rangefinder-style cameras these are a perfect match.

yup yup yup. just got a 24mm f 2.8 for my a7c. now i can toss this camera in my purse and take photos/videos anytime. i chose the a7c for its size to upgrade my canon APSC M6 to a full frame setup again, so might as well keep the lenses light.

These aren't made for the film maker. They are targeted at those buying the A7C. Part of a compact, premium offering of the G line. The nifty fifty 50-f/1.8 is entry level, slower AF with stepper motor and external focusing helicoid. The 50mm f/2.5 is likely a far more advanced optical formula, with ED Aspherical elements. The 50 f/1.8 is the standard 'Planar' formula of old.

Those 3 lenses make a lot of sense for the new upcoming Airpeak Drone from Sony. And I believe that's the only reason why they exist. You can swap them and don't need to rebalance the gimbal. And they are lightweight which is another important reason. Also they have gears also for a gimbal. That's the reason why they exist.

I just received the 50mm F2.5 today. I also have the big and heavy Sony 50mm F1.2. I am very impressed with the F2.5 imaging quality and sharpness, size and light weight so far. So much so that I'm very excited about it. I'll probably carry this lens with me everywhere! To me it is not redundant at all - it is a high quality, take everywhere lens!!

also the 50mm f1.8 has tons of chromatic aberrations, slow AF, and super soft corners in the image. I'm sure the 50 f2.5mm beats it in every way. Matt hows the vignetting on that 50? I'm getting the 40mm f2.5 I think it's the most original of all of them

Great info in this video Matt, bro I have Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 to film closeups, 1 Rokinon 18mm 1.8 to wide scenes and Sigma 30mm and they are great lenses but I think Sony finally nailed it with that lenses about the small and lightweight to film comfortable without to rebalance the gimbals, so when I use my tamron btw “I love that lens very great quality” but is a heavy and after 15 or 20 minutes filming my arms are tired. But I saw in your test the sony 24mm is very similar in quality to my Rokinon 18mm. You have to try tha lens is cheap, very wide and great quality. But definitely I want to try the Sony 40mm, look great and lightweight. Have good one.

I love that they made a 40mm. It's one of my favorite focal lengths. Can't wait until I get my hands on it. I would def get a 40 or 45mm GM if they make one. I have the Konica 40mm and the 2 Minolta 45mm (one is click and other de-clicked). Both companies are predecessors of Sony so I'm pretty stoked that they are continuing this unique legacy focal length and with it the modern features of sony glass like Eye-AF. 🙌🏼

A great review as I have been looking to buy 24mm... I do have a question if you can share your opinion. I would like to use A7C + 24mm as FPV/POV for travelling gears. So, most of the FPVs are going to be walking into a plane, talking to a person in a car, talking over a table full of different plates of food, etc. At the moment, I am using GoPro 9 for videos (at the equivalent 16mm lens) and A7Riii + 35mm.

@@fredcsmith000 What a pointless reply. We would all rather have GM, Batis or even Loxia lenses, but these affordable primes by Sony are direct competitors to the Sigma I-Series lenses so it would make sense to talk about them in this video. There is zero point comparing the new Sony 24mm f/3.5 to the Batis 25mm or the the Sony 24mm GM as they aren't targeting the same consumers. But good for you for being an elitist prat. 10 points to Slytherin I guess... Also, what does 70/80's Sigma have to do with the time time day. You won't find a single person who doesn't think that Sigmas modern lenses A) aren't SIGNIFICANTLY improved over their perviousniffwfings, and B) aren't as good or better than native equivalents across all mounts.

@@BigSlimyBlob As it happens I just bought the 65mm and as you say the construction is nothing short of outstanding. Fully Metal construction with very low tolerances, a metal lens hood that has a very nice texture allowing for easy gripping, and 2 lens caps! One magnetic metal cap which while cool, will collect bits of dirt on the felt side that touches the front element, and regular plastic cap that is just ok. Compact and well made, though perhaps a tad heavier than it needed to be. Certainly a premium product and very sharp. I don't know if I'd replace a 55 1.8 with it, but it's definitely am excellent lens.

@@liamriley9816 Sounds fantastic, I'm definitely considering picking it up. At 405g it may not be the lightest lens around (certainly not compared to this 173g 40mm) but it's light enough for me. The 55mm is extremely tempting, though. It's really really sharp, lighter than the 65mm, and really not that much more expensive. Either I get a 55mm and use it for everything, or get the 65mm and 40mm and use each for different activities. But going with the 65 and 40, I'm paying more for somewhat less sharpness, so is that worth it? It would help if I knew just how much sharper the 55mm is than those other two. The 65 and 40 aren't crazy top-of-the-line products, but they certainly look pretty sharp. It's so hard to choose... no wonder these comparison videos are so popular.

For gimbal weight matters a lot. This three lenses have the same weight with new 28-60 kit lens, and it allows you not to rebalance gimbal every time switching lenses. The pain in the ass is A7IV does not supports focus breathing compensation for this lenses. Why?!

50mm f1.8 is very loud when focusing. Didn't like it. I might get 50mm & 24mm.

40mm is the perfect focal length for cinema. Ask Roger Deakins.

I believe the 1.2 is worse for breathing which is typical for fast lenses. So really if you don't want breathing you have to print up for a mf cine lens that weighs a ton and costs a lot lot more. Xeens are probably the most affordable minimal breathing cine lenses. But these look really cool and the 24 would be a blessing on the Ronin RS2 and the 40 I think, I always feel 50 is a bit tight for gimble work. So I see a lot of video and street shooters going for these. 40 being the best compromised focal length for street.

Redundant if you're going to carry your gear for less than 1 hour... yes. But try hiking up a mountain or walking 30+km and carrying a heavy 50mm 1.2 with 3 other big lenses in your backpack, then you will see how amazing these new lenses are. Excellent quality in a very tiny lightweight package, ideal to put on a lightweight body like A7C and carry all day without your arm going numb. Also the basic 50 1.8 is pretty horrible so I'm glad Sony made the 50mm 2.5 as a modern replacement, those AF motors are lightning fast compared to the old one.

These lenses are basically mini GM lenses for 1/3rd the price. Excellent build quality, AF speed and accuracy, sharpness etc...They are the cheapest G lenses Sony makes. Dont bother comparing the 50 2.5 to the 50 1.8 because the 2.5 obliterates it in every way possible. In fact, the 2.5 is sharper wide open than the 1.8 ever gets and the AF speed and accuracy is night and day. Not to mention the far superior build quality and pro features found on the 2.5 the 1.8 lacks. Ive been a professional photographer for 17 years and owned that garbage 50 f/1.8 couldn't return it fast enough. So telling photographers to get the 1,8 over the 2.5 is absurd. Stick to videography maybe. Thanks
