Refilling disposable camping gas canisters with BBQ gas - Is this a good idea or not? Does disposable mean disposable ie Don't refill them??
I bought this refilling gadget of eBay from China, cost around $10 that allows you to refill a camping gas canister with straight propane from your BBQ gas bottle. Not sure why the BIX ceramic burner's flame was jumping up a little bit every now and again as you can see?
I'll try it tomorrow and see if after some time has passed that stops happening.
If you have any thoughts/suggestions after watching the video, I'd be happy to read them.....thanks!

The large tanks come with propane only, while the small cartridges are design for butane or butane/propane mixture, which has much (around 10 times) lower vapor pressure. So, filling the small, thin wall cartridges with pure propane may cause them to blow up. The cartridges are probably made stronger by certain safety factor so you might be lucky and nothing happen so far. However I would say it is not safe to fill small thin wall aluminum cartridges with pure propane, especially if you plan to take them to your camping during hot weather.
@SpokoSpoko
@SpokoSpoko 2 жыл бұрын
@NearlyNuked It does not work this way with liquefied gases like butane or propane. If you charge your cartridge half way, the level of liquefied propane or butane will be lower but the vapours above will still exert the same pressure equal to the value of vapour pressure of given gas. The same way as the pressure of water vapour in the bottle is the same doesn’t matter if it is filled half way or to one quarter. Thats why you can not use pressure meter to see how much gas left in your cartridge. Instead, weighting is better method.

@@attilavicen1579 I would not put any more propane than it is written on the can, but if that lighter refill has less or equal percentage you can use it. Myself I tried to load my cartridges from two sources, butane from small cheap refills and propane from the large BBQ tank. However I found it too much hassle. The savings is small and not worth it. 1 you over filled it, 2 that's not a tank made for propane pressures. 3 if you're trying to save money, us wood... It's free. PS, it's jumping the flame because your tank is overfilled, and you're getting liquid propane in the burner.

I suspect the can might be over refilled allowing liquid gas to enter the line. Try putting 50 grams in then test if the flame spurts. If it does not spurt with less gas then you can try using a little more in stages until the problem reoccurs.

I'm of the understanding that butane has a pressure around 32 psi and propane 320 or so. (to do with the boiling points). maybe that's why they have 70 / 30 mix in camping stove canisters for cold weather use. if the weather is not cold why not use butane and avoid the excessive pressure in the canisters? a lot safer if the word safer can be used under this topic. regards from the uk
@SpokoSpoko
@SpokoSpoko 2 жыл бұрын
The reason is the butane is not sold in big tanks. Only propane. But you are right regarding the pressure 32 psi vs 320 psi. In my opinion it is risky operation because the cartridge might be not strong enough, especially during hot weather.

@@SpokoSpoko I get same influx of flames from filling to 1LB propane tank but once tank is warmed up then pressure normalizes it. Both propane and butane pressure is dependent on temperature. At room temp propane's about 145psi, it doesn't get to 320psi till it hits 130f. Both disposable Propane and propane/Butane mix cylinders have safety valves or a Rupture Disc that will vent tank before they could reach burst pressure.....But I agree it makes more sense to get the adapter to refill with disposable butane cans. If you really wanna use straight propane you can get an adaptor to use 1lb disposable propane tanks with your stove.....Many stoves these days even come with the adaptor.

@@escapetherace1943 I looked up dot specs for a primus canister I ihave, specs say minimum bursting pressure is 240psi, and canister should never exceed 125psi at 130f. Granted they do use a mix of propane and butane, but the low amounts of propane keep things under that 125psi, barely. However if you are filling with pure propane, you are at 200psi at 110F with any amount of propane, as long as you still have some in liquid form, whether it's almost empty or full. Now bring that up to 130f and you could be on the high side of 240psi. Granted that's minimum burst pressure, but I'd sure like to have some margin of error in my favor. If you aren't using this with a camp stove, where weight is a big deal, why not get an adapter to your burner, for the 1 lbs cans of propane that are sold for heavier propane stoves, torches, and lanterns, often under the Coleman brand. They are easy to refill with no weighing, and they are built very solidly for the greater pressure. The small cans are built to be lighter, which does not seem to be a big deal for your use.

One possible reason for using a propane/ butane mix is butane has a much higher boiling point and a lower gas vapour pressure compared to propane so it may help to stabilise the gas mix and lower the pressure in the cylinder . I would knock the refill weight down about 10% and see if the flare up stops or run the burner for a while and see if it stops and if it does turn it off and weigh the cylinder again - that will be your maximum fill weight in the future .

They must add the "smell" to propane. It will make for some build-up in the orifice. Propane torches need to be cleaned regularly. No big deal. Butane will turn into a gas at a lower temp than propane. When it's cold, propane losses pressure, the butane has a lower boiling point, so it keeps the pressure up in a cold tank, or a cold morning/evening. Yes, dangerous. So are most things. 😀 Be smart, use safe practices, triple check yourself. Learn all you can. GET RID OF ANY CANISTERS WITH MECHANICAL PROPLEMS OR DAMAGE. It's not worth it to trust a disposable canister to save a few bucks. Being OK with a good one, that's one thing, one that has any problems, not worth it. My 2 cents worth..... Have fun.

Kind of scary asking for comments after the fact whether this is inherently dangerous. You should’ve done your research prior to doing it! This can be definitely dangerous and is not recommended. You can read about it all over the place. I think ultimately if you keep the volume at 70% full or lower and the temperature of the tank below 90° you’d probably be fine. But filling it like you did and not knowing actually how much you put in tells me you don’t know the dangers or differences between propane and butane and of what could happen. If you research this more you’ll find butane would probably suffice with your requirements but be much safer in the end. If you’re bent on using propane then use the green little gas tanks designed for propane. The one pounder. Those you can refill much safer and the tank is much more sturdy

That is _exactly_ why they write don't refill on them! Propane has much higher wapor pressure than butane and mixes are in between. Never fill pure propane in anything than propane canisters. You risk others rupture especially when getting warm. 40-50 degree and pure propane pressure skyrockets. Just look pressure charts. The other way round filling pure butane in mix or propane tanks are quite OK. You can however experience a performance loss especially with direct pressure devices as when the gas gets cold when using the pressure for butane drops more than propane and mixes. However might be fine for summer usages and stuff with pressure regulator. Also - don't overfill them! Your way looks very crappy and even though you think your canister is empty is might still contain quite a bit actually. The best way is when you buy them write full weight on them and never fill above. That way you're sure you know when to stop without guessing

Ha ha ha ha … 😂😂🤣🤣 why the hell would he fill this up and then ask if it’s dangerous in the comments. And Barbecue gas? What the hell is that? Their is no such thing! If your talking propane gas , that gas holds at way more pressure than is allowed for that small container. Butane holds at a lower pressure. I’m surprised he didn’t blow his finger off if it exploded trying to fill it up.

The problem with your flame is also the air in your tank. You have to purge it--luckily the atmospheric gas is less bouyant, so it sits on top of the fuel relative to gravity. Thank means just by slowly purging the gas right off the top, you can push out the atmosphere at the cost of a little fuel. The fuel boils and replaces the volume as the air come out under pressure. I'm going to subscribe and keep an eye on your future projects! Hello from MI, USA!
