John Bear Woodworks & Furniture Restoration

In this video, I restore this Ethan Allen dining room table that is 20+ years old. It had seen some better days and the finish was a little gummy and faded from years of use. I strip it all down and bring it back to life.

Oh, you are so smart. I'm watching little details. I like your system for cutting your sandpaper. I have never thought of that. You could even add a ruler on there, if you needed a certain size, like I do with my palm sander. I usually just trace the previous piece. I like your idea better! Thanks!👍

Oh my, this looks amazing! I'm watching videos on how to stain a table and whatnot as I just thrifted a table of about this one's color (but much smaller, only a bit over 4 feet long and it's round). Thankfully, the bottom half is wrought iron, so I don't need to do anything there, but the top has yellow marks on it and maybe a few small chips. The chips I can deal with...the yellow markings, I cannot and it's a pretty table that doesn't deserve to be hidden with a table cloth, lol. So, as one who has absolutely never done something like this before...I'm scared but I'm determined to learn! Thank you for the video and again, very beautiful result :)

@@newplayer5433 I decided I actually could put up with the table, lol. At least for now. Placemats can cover the worst of it. Spectacular results! I would have liked more discussion of what products you used, or (if you want to stay proprietary) at least a discussion regarding how to think about what products to use. For example, how do we think about the layers of the various coats - e.g. what each coat does for the final product. Also, you diluted some products. It would have been nice to discuss why. Clearly, this is your business. So, it would be totally understandable if you don't want to discuss some of the details. However, since you went to the trouble of making the video and mentioning some of the products then a little more perspective on those would be greatly appreciated. However, thanks for the video! It shows a lot about how a pro does the work. (And, if I lived in your area I would just let you do it; cause, after all, you are the pro.)

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to. Just looking at a stain color sample on the internet looks different than real life and will look different on different wood species and how it's applied and everything. My best advice is to find a stain close to it and buy a few and mix them until you can just make your own and do samples on your specific piece til it matches. That's what I would do. I like varathane stains. They seem to look and work much better than minwax. Best of luck to you!

@JohnBearWoodworks
@JohnBearWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Five coats is way too many. More coats doesn't equal better, in this case it can actually weaken the finish. How are you applying your finish? What does one coat mean to you? A rough finish tells me you're not spraying a heavy enough coat and it's drying too quickly. The roughness is overspray. There are so many different factors to spraying lacquer and they are constantly changing. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners if that applies to you. Hope some of that makes sense and helps you out!

Hello, I don't know if you reply, but I am here in Texas and trying to repairing my table for my daughter's 25 birthday party. This is the second 'foot' that has broken and in attempting to fix it, I noticed that another one had broken on the other end. As I was taking it apart and to repair it, I think I may have discovered what the problem is. But I don't know how to fix it (or not sure) or even what these parts are called. My dinning room table seats 12, so it's large, and has two pedestal 'legs' on it. Each leg has three arched shaped feet with brass covers on the tips. The feet are attached with a three pronged metal bracket on the bottom and a metal 'slide' attached to the foot that allows it slide into a fitted metal insert bracket on the leg. What I have discovered is that several of the 'metal slides' just slip right out so all the weight of the table is on the foot and bottom bracket and not supported by being anchored in the slide.on the leg. We do move our table around a lot when entertaining, remodeling, redecorating etc, but we try to be extra careful with the feet. But obviously with three broken feet, we have some issues. So I am wondering if you are familiar with these brackets/slides and if you know where I can purchase new ones OR fix the existing ones so the legs don't slip out when pressure is applied. You can Email me at thecarrs@sbcglobal.net I appreciate your help, and enjoy your channel!
