Years ago I used to watch my buddy fix cars after work and we would talk about everything from goofball silliness to life and death... he passed 20+ years ago... never had another friend like him again... I miss him more than I care to think about. Thanks for bringing him back to me for 14 minutes.

I lost my brother who was a year and a half younger than me in 1998 to drug addiction. He never made it to thirty. He was determined to destroy himself. It didn't really shock anyone, but that didn't take the sadness away. I still think about him some thirty plus years later. A lot of my friends and coworkers think I'm dull or just old. I don't use drugs, hardly drink. I workout, take care of my autistic son, work and play video games. I don't really expect them to understand or preach to them. I see my nieces and nephews coming of age and heading down the same path. It saddens me. I'll be here when they need me, but everyone makes their own choices

I'd like to shake your hand Duke. Thanks for sharing this. It made me think about my dad who I lost in January. We didn't have a great relationship for most of my life but it did get better before I lost him, and I'm thankful for that.

+Scott Sweet thanks Scott, I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I'm glad your relationship improved, that helps a lot. I know what you mean about not having that close relationship, I remember telling myself as a young man if I ever had kids I would try and have a great relationship with them. I'm happy that my sons and I are best friends. Thanks again.

Enjoyed this reflection. I'm your same age and live in the Pacific Northwest. Your insight about death and dying is refreshing. I worked in a hospital for four decades. As a nurse, I experienced second hand about your first hand experiences and how you describe losing your brother and parents. I've seen it thousands of times and I can say that your perspective is healthy and on target. The depth of your caring illustrates your love and respect for family. Well done.

Happy Thanksgiving. I lost 3 family members all within 3 years, one year for each. One being the most tragic which was my uncle who was a farmer. And that might be the hardest one for me too, since his wasn't predictable. And I wanted him to visit us in the states and take him to the Bass pro shop and enjoy our restaurants. I've done the hospice thing too. I think everyone wishes they can do things differently, but I know we will see everyone once again. Thanks for sharing. And keep living your life and just keep being a good father to your sons and husband, that is what is important now. oh, and it would be cool for you to make food videos too. Your sandwich looked really good, and seeing more home cooking will help me get away from going to fast food joints. Thanks Buff Dad

+taledarkside thank you so much, it's always good to see you here and on the buff dudes channel, we always look forward to your comments. I'm sorry for your losses, seems to come in waves like that, like it's some kind of test for us. Buff mom as she's known as - makes a good sandwich for sure. The videos will be increasing in the food area. We will all be together again in the same house for a few months while the bulking plan starts in January so we'll be able to get a lot of content out that way. Thanks again for your very thoughtful comment. Happy Thanksgiving back to you. DiyDuke

Found your channel via the buff dudes videos because I'm planning to build some gym equipment and get back on track both emotionally and physically. You're an awesome dude, it's good to reflect on life and all that it entails from time to time. My wife left me very recently (3 years married, 9 years together) and a few years ago my dad passed unexpectedly. It's difficult sometimes, that's for sure! But it's important to keep moving. Keep looking forward. I'm beginning to realize that more and more. Anyways I'll stop rambling, you've got yourself a new KZfaq friend :)

@@diyduke I know you mainly from your sons channel, and I always love when you are in there video's. Just discovered your channel and i'm loving it. This video really did something to me. Its nice to see a down to earth, hard working, loving person, reflecting on life. You brought up 2 really nice sons, and for what I can see you have a great relationship with them. Great job on that one, there are so many sons without a good father figure. You managed it. And you still happily married. Life can't always be smooth sailing, got to take those big waves too. But if I turn out to be something like you, I would be really proud. God bless you. Wish you all the best in the world. Keep up the video's, reflecting video's, diy, or with your sons. “Even though she’s gonna edit this video”! 🤣😅 yeah - gift giving can be hard. Sometimes couples like to tell each other what they want and that helps with the “what to get” problem. As for ideas, some people like to do stuff - like make a special dinner or food of the other persons’ favorites and/plan a special getaway, day, or activity. My S.O. and I like to plan ski weekends together in the winter and give that to each other or go into it together as a gift - like a gift card or gift certificate (just for something to unwrap) over a special homemade dinner or dessert, and we “wrap up” a little box with a fancy note of the special planned future activity or trip/getaway. Favorite gourmet pet treats are also a good small gift (fave item of the pet’s that is). Sometimes we plan a special date night or day with beginning to end of the other person’s fave activities, foods, restaurants, etc. Okay, that’s all I’ve got! 🤔😩
