I refurbish an old swaybacked anvil. I mill off the top deck and regrind and buff out the horn. It was pretty beat up and is now very usable.

Amazed you could get it in the mill! Lifting those can be a good way to get a hernia - why do I know - don't ask! That came out beautiful. You could always deal with the old paint with some methylene chloride and then leave it natural.

I've considered doing this before with a fly cutter and carbide tool bit as I don't have a face mill like that. I wasn't sure if it would work. Now you have given me the confidence to give it a whirl. Enjoyed as always Randy.

Randy reinvented chrome finish without the chrome - gleaming. Glad it cleaned up. Mr. Whitham would have used that cool shop crane to lug that piece around effortlessly. Me - I still have to schlep that stuff or drag out the cherry picker. Curious what the hardness is now. _Dan_

nice clean up on the horn the anvil had a hard life didn't it . i don't know how you would do it on the mill but the face is not normally dead flat they have a slight crown side to side helps move the metal better just like the crown of a hammer face. and you dont have to be dead on holding it flat to the face also . very subtle features on a anvil

1) An anvil with a mirror finish looks very strange. 2) With all of those sparks, it would have made a good Independence Day post. 3) Why didn't you use some Motion Lotion when grinding the top surface?
@whitehoose
@whitehoose 6 жыл бұрын
I hadn't realised that you were a trained mime artiste. I could understand everything you didn't say about the rounded edges. Every other refurb I've seen just used the hand wheel and went for a close(ish) finish. Using the mill like that was both visually pleasing ... and looked to put down a fine finish. Too fine in fact to go pounding on it with a big hammer!!! That's the point I'd have lost any sense of reason and would have been sorely tempted to go for perfect edges... even if it left the anvil 1\2" thick.
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy. The milled finish was very good I also stoned it a bit.
@TheArsonsmith4242

normally that edge isn't square, but should be rounded and the rounding should be tapered from large radius up near the horn to almost square at the back.
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 6 жыл бұрын
I did not know that. Thanks for the info. Right now it is a split face edge finish.
@TheArsonsmith4242

I picked up an anvil a few years ago and did a partial working restore on it. The one I got has about a 1/4" plate of tool steel that is forge welded to a cast base so I had to be careful with how much material I took off. I just used an angle grinder to take out the worst of the dings. I don't have much video other than a quick show and tell of it but it is one of my older shop videos from before I decided to actually try a little at youtube shop videos.
@RRINTHESHOP

I took off about 0.1". Not sure if it is plated on top.

Cast iron is common for cheap anvil, cast steel is considered high quality, where a cast iron base with steel plate is sort of a compromise. This is all info I've found from research as I only have experience with my one anvil.
