There is merit to leaving things as they look. For example: with archeological finds. It is best if they are left as they were found and replicas are made on how they might have looked. However, with art, and useable items, it is another story. Keeping them functional is better than letting them rot...

that's.. not even true, they never "remove the ravages of time", they actually use completely reversible inks and patches which can be removed at a later date, and if a art piece is restored it's always made 100% what work has been done and can be completely reversed, making game labels and trying to pass them off as legit is the complete opposite, this is like if an art restorer painted over a damaged work of art and didn't tell anyone about it

The inkjet versions have a special coating to keep the ink from being absorbed in the paper. Toner doesn't fuse to it very well. Not pointing out the obvious, but mentioned it just in case somebody wanted to know the specific difference between inkjet and laser paper.

Yep, as can be seen at 4:06 in the video the package is of InkJet variety labels. If a "type" designator is on a product, it is often for a good reason (though sometimes just for marketing)

Agreed. I took a whole class in museum curatorial practices. Museum restoration and conservation work often involves scrubbing off all the old dirt and touching up the paint and/or taking something apart and putting it back together again - of course, done with extreme care and documenting every step of the process. The idea is to make the object in question more closely resemble its original state (including returning machines to working order) and make them last longer as well. If you were to re-sell these carts, you should state that the labels are reproductions.

Making reproduction carts is also technically IP theft, but I don't know of anyone who has been punished for that.

If any court would consider what David did to be IP theft, then the law is totally screwed up... He isn't running a business printing other people's labels for a profit, he is restoring an original that was bought and paid for.

You're right, I view it as restoration too. I do wonder if people who complain about video game restoration also complain about art and antique restoration. I suspect not. While I believe that a seller of a restored item has the moral duty to state that it is restored at the point of sale, I don't see why they should have to do more than that, especially if it's to the detriment of the look of the restoration. Do restored antiques have to have statements like "restored veneer" embossed into them? They do not.

If people go around telling people what they should do with THEIR own property, they need to re-evaluate the priorities in their lives. I wouldn't waste time or energy even acknowledging people that complain.

what i would probably do is write on the bottom of the label something that indicate that the label is not genuine, otherwise you could trick someone into thinking that those are original labels

Mike - totally agree. As a mechanic who has restored many “classic” cars over the years, it often doesn’t make sense to keep original designs that were known to be faulty. Some guys do - they want an all-original, numbers matching, just as it was when it rolled off the assembly line type car. That’s fine, but I’m not one of those guys, and I make that very clear to the people who offer me resto-jobs. I’ve only done 2 of those and I didn’t enjoy them nearly as much as the “regular” resto-jobs. In the end, it’s whatever makes YOU, as the owner, happy.

If people are buying old games to play them, then they won't care if the labels are original or re-manufactured. If someone buys a game to speculate and make huge profits, then they get all they deserve because it's people like that who put the prices of old games out of the reach of those that buy the games to play.

It's an interesting ethical discussion though. This is a fact: those traces of use are now gone forever. He did a wonderful job, but he erased a tiny bit of history in the process. Those cartridges were authentic, although ugly. Now they're pretty, but they're inauthentic. It's all about what you value the most. Reducing the argument to a question of ownership kind of ruins the discussion. Of course the owner can do what he want. But this was a discussion about restoration versus conservation.

Mats: If it were something rare, hard to come by, etc, I might have an issue with it. These are not rare games by any stretch, and anyone can buy multiple copies on eBay for very little money, in much better condition than these. If he were re-labeling Earthbound or something, that's a different story. Some people also have issues with altering old gaming consoles to repair or restore them, or get them to work with more modern TVs, or have better video output. I personally like to keep consoles as original as possible, but repairs and restorations (if done well), I have no issues with. Even a video mod to make it work with a modern TV, I'm more or less OK with, again, if it's done cleanly. Hardware is more interesting if you can use it, after all. Everything has a finite lifespan. All of these old consoles and games and computers we like to collect is going to break down and stop working one day, and no one makes parts for most of it anymore. Some examples should be preserved in museums and the like, but I feel like we should do what we can to keep the rest in action as long as possible, even if it leaves things in a not entirely original condition.

The self stick lamination sheets have issues with "silvering". As it is the packing tape might develop that as well over time.

There are also laminating sheets that don't have adhesive but you need heat, glue or other contact material to attach them.

sellotape will definitely yellow, as it's not its intended purpose, probably much faster than laminating sheet. Just take a look at those old record sleeves with tape on the edges, I remember that back in the days, while they were still current, and not vintage, they were all yellowish even then...

You could use self adhesive laminate, I think it's probably what would've been used originally. Commercial grade would be very thin.

I used to trade big time with Roman coins and clean coins always fetched higher price. Of course you DONT take off the patina or any oxidisation layers, or use anythin that may damage the metal, but its no a no-brainer to get the dirt off. There were times (10-15+ years ago) I could make thousands of € by buying large humps of beaten, dirty coins and restore them through careful cleaning (using microscope and such).

If you find a 150 years old coin and you want it to look as new, what is the problem in that? Maybe you want a coin that has an historical value (the printings on it) as well as a visual value (a nice shink look). Also, not everybody cares about monetary value, if you are a collector (that as the name suggests, collect stuff) maybe you don't want to sell your collection.

There's a difference between immersing in water and giving it a quick rinse. It's not like David soaked these overnight in the sink.

I was initially worried about this problem too when I finally made a few labels myself this afternoon however when I applied the glue to the paper and then put them on the cart and smoothed it out with my fingers and a micro fiber cloth the seam virtually disappeared. In general I love the end results however I do wish some parts of it were a little less wrinkled. Maybe when it's fully dry and the adhesive has had some time to cure it'll look just fine. 😀🎮💞😉

Indeed - the way he used spray adhesive is NOT the correct way to use it (RTFM) - as was evidenced by the solvent bleed through - You always spray and let sit for some time, and if you REALLY need it to stick, spray on both surfaces and let sit.

I got 2 fully functioning controllers still with it and 6 fully working cartridges that arnt in the best of state except mortal kombat which was in a container keeping it completely pristine. the wire on the mains socket was pulled but we fixed that so everything is original, old, dirty, and fantastic. and I've already played all of them. works great. did have to buy a new av lead and scart adapter to connect it to the TV as I no longer have an old 80s or 90s TV.

The issue I can think of is that you lose infomation about paper quality, print quality etc. when you completly replace the label. An old label can contain a lot of information other than its graphic design.

Problem 1 - Untrained amateurs following the advice laid out in this video may caused irreversible damage to their rare/valuable games. Problem 2 - Failing to provide any warnings as to how this may impact the value of a game could lead to people unintentionally devaluing their collection in a way they later regret. Problem 3 - Failing to include any warnings that indicate these are reproduction labels adds uncertainty and instability to the collector's market. Relabeled games, regardless of their owner's original intentions, always end up either destroyed or place back into the market due to theft, sales or the death of the original owner. You might not have a problem with the concept of relabeling, but can you see how the information presented in this specific video is irresponsible, given that there is absolutely zero consideration given to why someone might NOT want to go ahead and do this to every game they own?

If you are a collector of games you already know about what devalues them. Not everyone wants to resale their collections. It's not going to be too much longer before we can make factory-quality labels at home, and once that happens, all the "rules" are out the window. Get used to it.

I finally invested in a set of Scotty Peelers after reading about them. It took awhile to think about...because why waste money on something your fingernails can do? But, I am now convinced! A set of 3 plastic and 1 metal can be found for less than $10. If you peel lots of small (or even just a few large) labels, it's worth a few bucks!

The lesson is: electronics are fine getting wet - so long as there is no POWER applied to the circuits. They are water resistant. Just let them set out and fully dry (I'd recommend hours or a day or more depening on how many nooks and crannies there are - eg if water got between the chips and the circuit board). Then reassemble. Or use a dehumidifier in a small room/big box if you need it.

I'm not a collector, nor do I personally care about somewhat beat-up original labels vs. reproduction labels, but I can guarantee that somebody who is paying $50+ for these cartridges (with the "retro" boom due to KZfaq etc. even common games like Contra are now going for $50+ in most places) would very much care about whether ANYTHING on their relatively expensive cartridge was new/fake. Of course "normal" or casual gamers/non-collectors would be more likely to play these games on the Nintendo Virtual Console/download them vs. buying a physical cartridge anyway.

To use the same reasoning as in the video - I know a guy with a 6 decades old Jaguar MKV convertible. He had the choice to order a original headlight frame for a few thousands or reproduce a mirror copy from the other headlight in a professional 3d printshop that could print to steel and chrome. The price, including the work of the CAD guy who meassured the piece and drew it in 3D, was a little under $800 and nobody could see the difference other than that it was really shiny and brand new. The car in its current state is worth over half a million. I doubt that a potential buyer would notice it or care for it since all the rest is original.
