This video shows you the inside of a relay and explains how they work with a real world example as well as circuit diagrams. I needed to know, so I researched and made this video. Hope it helps! I know I learned a lot and it will come in very handing for wiring and also diagnosing modifications to my cars.

Won't you run the battery or higher current flow through 30 and a lower current through 86?

87a is convienent to use when it's necessary to turn something off when you turn the relay on.

@@HelpMeDIY turn off the lights when starting a vehicle (my motorcyle does this). disable the use of a convertible top when starting the car. disable the air conditioning compressor when the ecu detects an overheating situation. (my sports car does this). the list is just about endless as to what one may want to prevent from happening while something else is happening, assuming the thing that IS happening demands a relay. of course, the thing that one wishes to prevent from happening need not involve a relay.
