This is a casual review of the ReMarkable 2 Electronic Notebook and the Marker Plus stylus. For more information, see here
remarkable.com/
I also bought the grey polymer weave Folio that magnetically holds the notebook. I also bought (from Amazon) an additional EMR pen, the Staedtler Noris Digital 'pencil'. If it had an eraser built in it would be perfect.
Specs are:
Specifications CPU: 1.2 GHz dual core ARM processor, 8GB of Storage, 1GB of memory all powered by a 3000mah battery. The overall dimensions are 9.7" x 7.4" x 0.2" and it weighs about 14 ounces (0.88 pounds). The display is 10.3" with a 1872 by 1404 pixel digital e-ink paper. It has support for 2.4ghz and 5ghz WiFi. The marker pen supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

An attempt at creating a review video. This was a good exercise on a number of fronts. I scripted all the words prior to filming and then loaded them onto a web-based teleprompter
telepromptermirror.com/voice-...
I had a laptop casting the text onto a mirror that the camera looked through. The laptop had an external Rode VideoMic Pro microphone plugged in to help with the audio quality for the teleprompter. The Teleprompter was a bit hit and miss, seemed to work well before filming and then got jinxed when the recording light was on. I used a Panasonic S1H with a Sigma Art 50mm lens, set to something like f5. The S1H is encased in a Tilta cage to provide lots of cold shoes for; the remote, audio receiver, monitor, HMDI clamp, etc. I set it on manual focus in the hope that it wouldn't matter too much if I moved around, but hoping to blur the 'wood' background. Not very successful on all counts (see bloopers at end). I recorded in 4k 24fps using LOG. However, there was no need for LOG as was filming in the evening most of the time. Sound was courtesy of a Rode Wireless GO set with a Lavalier and straight into the S1H camera. Lighting consisted of a soft box from the front left and a light behind me shining up from the floor. I used a Atomos Ninja Assassin 7" monitor for framing and focus assistance (pah!).
The editing process was interesting. I'm conscious that me talking in monotone for long lengths is dull, so started to add in stock clips. I tried some jump cuts but that just looked awkward so removed them. The music helps during those silent times when you're just watching me scribble. Applied the Panasonic (basic) LUT to all S1H footage.
Some B-Roll was created with a camera (manual) slider. I used Windows 10 XBox Gaming recording features (Windows Key-G) to record the reMarkable 2 Windows application but I noticed that it sliced off the bottom part of video captures.
The backdrop is "Retro Brown Wood Background" from Kate Backdrop UK and was my attempt to replicate the Peter McKinnon/Matti Haapoja real wood background. Look at those pull marks from the clamps.. :-)
Music is from www.epidemicsound.com/
Stock Clips from www.storyblocks.com/video
Editing with Adobe CC (Premiere Pro)
This took about 5 hours to write and film, and probably about 10 hours to edit (over two days).
EDIT: Well, just over a week and we're near 550 views (thank you to all!) and 15 subscribers (amazing!) which is great. A lot of views having been driven by keywords around "reMarkable" (obviously), so there must be quite a bit of interest.

It's a really great device. I've had my RM2 for over two months now and I love it. I use it daily for drawing, reading, studying, journaling, writing poetry, and doing puzzles like sudoku, mazes, and word searches. I am also learning cursive and calligraphy handwriting.

It’s great to hear what you’re doing. I need to explore some of those ideas as well! I’ve only just started exploring the calligraphy. Mine has proved invaluable for work. I can easily search through my notes now. My colleagues will say... how did the such and such meeting go? And within seconds I can tell them. 😃👍 I’m also trying to commit my KZfaq ideas down on ‘paper’ (RM2) in the hope of generating more videos. Thanks for watching.

Oh my goodness... when you said cool ending.. I wondered what the cool ending was.. so I had to revisit that clip.. I had forgotten all about that ! At that time I was using my autoqueue that had voice recognition so it would move at the speed that I spoke.. except, it was great during the rehearsal and then as soon as thought .. this is it.. it would stutter, hence me trying to repeat the phrases to get it to move along. Thanks for watching.. and thanks for reminding me!

I’m still using mine everyday to make meeting notes. Still love my ‘pencil’ as well. And now, with the new update Version 2.6.2.75.... working with PDFs and ePub books is so much better. Let me know how you get on. Thanks for watching.

Received my remarkable 2, and quite frankly it is brilliant! It is not a iPad with distractions from messages/emails etc, which is good. I use it everyday for my meetings, catch-ups, training - taking notes. It is quite a good eReader as well, I've heard it's not the best, but I think it's quite good. The build quality is superb, I got the Book cover and the pencil with the eraser on. I get the Connect service free for 100 days, then it is £7.99 a month, again other reviewers are not happy with this, I think it's a bargain actually.

Paul, that's great news.. The eReader functionality has come a long way since I reviewed the device, and now.. with tagging, super useful. I've just had a look at the three tiers of 'connect'. There's the; 'No Plan' (No Connect) service at £0, the Connect Lite at £3.99/month and Connect at £5.99/month. With Connect Lite you get the Cloud Storage.. which is great if you also have the reMarkable app on your desktop PC and/or mobile device as you can sync across all of those, and, it's a form of backup. I certainly use that feature a lot. Then there's all the additional features with the full Connect. If I was presented with the choice of features and knowing what I know now, I'd probably opt for Connect Lite and not miss anything else. Happy note taking !

@@allthegear-noidea1298 Thanks Dave, there were a lot of reviewers, who put in their lead line, 'I'm sending my remarkable 2 back, here's why.....'. It was click-bait, this company has now sorted out it's order problems (people waiting months for their order), and the subscription service is a good move/business model. I pay the same amount of money to Amazon, for their service, it's pennies, per month. It's perfect for note taking, and storing these notes in the cloud where you can read them on multiple devices using the remarkable app, is great. I'm NOT sending my remarkable 2 back😀

Just ordered my Remarkable 2, I'll let you know of my experience with this tablet, I have an iPad Pro, and an app for taking notes, so it will be an interesting comparison, thanks for the information @All The Gear - No Idea

Paul, thanks for your comments and watching the video.. I really should do an update. As an earlier adopter, I have all the features included in my purchase so no subscription model. I hope you used the affiliate link... as you'd get $/£40 off your purchase. 18 months on and I am still using mine everyday, predominantly for work and taking notes during customer calls. Invaluable. I've had no problems with mine all that time. I also load mine up with a lot of technical PDFs and use it as my reference library (and scribble notes on 'top' of the PDFs). Look forward to hearing about y our experience. All the best.. Dave

@@allthegear-noidea1298 Thanks Dave for making this video! It is really useful information in my purchasing decision, I do a lot of research when buying, it is expensive with the bundle, but I'll wait and see whether it is a worthy investment. I use Paperlike, on my iPad pro, it makes a big difference in drawing, taking notes etc. Thanks again Dave.

Hi - nice video. A question, if I may: does the device allow you to create bookmarks or the like, to aid navigation in notebooks spanning multiple pages?
@allthegear-noidea1298
@allthegear-noidea1298 3 жыл бұрын
Re: "Hi - nice video" - thanks, will try and up the quality on the next one. Bookmarks? As of the latest release (V2.5.0.27) unfortunately not. I think you have to err on the side of more notebooks than less, and inferring something through notebook names. There is a 'search' facility but it's only for filenames. For example, I started out with a single notebook for my KZfaq 'ideas', but now I have a notebook per idea. I've seen quite a few requests for bookmarks. Fingers crossed we'll see something in the next update.

thanks for the video - nice, I was also using a Livescribe Pen many years ago...ever considered to use an iPad Pro + Apple Pencil instead?
@allthegear-noidea1298
@allthegear-noidea1298 3 жыл бұрын
Klaus, thanks for your support. I loved that Livescribe pen.. but not only did it give up on me but also our corporate/work rules stated no more recording pens so I was doomed anyway. The iPad proposition is interesting and never really explored it. One argument is that it's an expensive option, but there again, so is the reMarkable 2 ! :-) .. A friend of mine is completely vested in the Apple ecosystem so he uses his ipad and apple pencil the whole time. I imagine that all these devices are good for someone in the right circumstances, no wrong and right choices. I remember many years ago investing in an Apple NewtonPad ! That was obsolete shortly after its release. Now what was that date ... 18.. 1892 ? :-)

@@allthegear-noidea1298 I also owned a Apple Newton - pretty cool. Believe it or not, I just orded a Livescribe Symphony Limited Edition a few days ago - the REAL paper feeling will be back soon. I'll use that combination when an iPad doesn't fit (too large, too heavy). Regardless what I'm using (iPad with Noteshelf.app or Pen) at the end everything goes to Evernote for searching and organizing. reMarkable was much to expensive for me - I already own an iPad and, now, I've added a Livescribe pen again :-). Kind Regards from Germany! stay healthy!

Klaus. Wasn’t aware of the Symphony but I did own an Aegir which looks to be the previous generation of the Symphony. The aegir was just unreliable in terms of battery life (it was always on) and pairing (paired it so many times). The original Echo was brilliant though. Let me know how it all goes. Thanks for your support.
@airestocky
@airestocky 3 жыл бұрын
@@allthegear-noidea1298 after a few days of using the Symphony I can say: it works very well. Pairing is no issue at all (just open the App and remove the cap, done - only one time it did not work automatically -> just press and hold the ink cartridge for 3 secs and then it paired). My personal highlight is the autosync to Evernote - works very nice. So, my paper like writing experience is back :-)

@@airestocky That's fantastic. I'm hoping my experiences with the Aegir fed back into their development process so that your experience could be a 1000x better :-) ... I have a stack of Livescribe books of varying sizes so the investment is still there.. Maybe I''ll revisit the technology at some point., there's nothing quite like real writing on real paper. Thanks for the update. Dave

Do you find the start up time of almost 20s to be too slow? Can you just leave it 'on'?
@allthegear-noidea1298
@allthegear-noidea1298 3 жыл бұрын
Great question Mark. Probably a bit dull watching a 20sec power-on sequence also! :-) After I posted the video, I suddenly thought this might be a misleading in that you have to go through this process every time, whereas in fact this is probably a rare event. Those events might be restarts after a firmware upgrade or perhaps a connection issue where you need to reboot. Other than that, it sleeps after 15 minutes of inactivity, and if you want to force it to sleep you simply tap the power button. When you want to wake it again, you tap the power button and it's instantly alive again. Thanks for your question.

What pencil you prefer?

Sorry about the delay in answering... The pencil.. The Staedtler everytime... it's the pencil I use all the time. I have the reMarkable Marker Plus with built in eraser and thought just having the pencil might become irritating, but in fact I do not miss the eraser. When I make a mistake I tend to use the Undo action more than anything. Have you had any experience with other pencils ?

@allthegear-noidea1298
@allthegear-noidea1298 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I've had my reMarkable for 15 months and used it almost every working day since. I use it for a number of functions, but predominantly it's for making notes when I use it for client/customer calls so it helps with keeping track and staying organised with those interactions, and, I use it for 'carrying' around key PDF documents (eg, camera manual, AWS manuals, development books..). I also sketch out my youtube ideas .. Right now.. if for some reason I didn't have it.. I would be lost and have to consider another one.

i was very reluctant to buy this due to lack of backlight, but so far seems ok. Still its strange not to have one when every other notebook has one, and remarkable is the most expensive!
@allthegear-noidea1298
@allthegear-noidea1298 3 жыл бұрын
Matteo, good to hear about your thoughts. I imagine the addition of a backlight would have compromised part of the design, eg the battery life or the thickness/weight.. I've had mine 5 months now, and I pick it up as though it's a notepad and use it during the work day. I find that I don't use it for much outside of work/evening, even though I tried. A backlight would have been nice for writing ideas down in the evening, but it's easily solved with one of the clip on mini-LED lights you get off of amazon. I think I've also mentioned several times, that I love the Staedtler 'pencil' and the feel, more so than the Marker Plus and it's good to know there's a cost effective alternative. Right now, I would be lost without the note taking ability. It took me a few weeks, but psychologically I've written off the initial cost and just thinking about the benefits. Thanks for your comments and watching the video !

@@allthegear-noidea1298 i had the Onyx Note air for a week but gave it back because the software is awful (poor UX poor UI, but it's not slow) once i realized it was fine to use with backlight turned off, i swithced to RM2. Clip on lights would do the job, but they just look hideous so won't be using one 😅
