I am 67 and brings me back to memories from family members that are now gone. The sad part is we have lost that family closeness. Seems today that we forget about our elders and the things they stood for. Truth, God, Morals, Thinking of others and being Humble. No wonder we are in such a mess in our world.

I attended the visitation and funeral of one of my uncles yesterday. A very mild mannered Christian man. His wife passed about 15 years ago. Now they are together forever with Jesus. We sent him home to Glory the way it should be. I now have 1 Uncle left here to enjoy out of a total of 9 aunts and uncles. They were all raised in the mountains by God fearing parents with no electricity or water or plumbing. I’ve always tried to show my kids and grandkids how to get by and work the way they did.

Oh what a wonderful day that will be, to run to Jesus in Heaven and be able to hug my amazing grandparents again!!!!🙏🏻❤️ Thank you sir (Mr. Donnie Laws) for such a great reminder! Those pictures look just like my family (but we’re all Okies original from Alabama & Arkansas) same food, same one room cabins and same clothes, that one Bible they owned sitting open on the table everyday!!! Thank You God for giving me the best grandparents that loved God and me!!!❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I cried so much during this video!!!! Tears of joy and happiness because I am saved and will see my family again someday, forever😀❤️

One thing I miss about my youth is listening to the stories my elders would tell. I would sit for hours with them, fully engrossed and hanging on every word. That's hard for a hyper child to do, but I'd want to learn about their lives. I'd stay up late hearing story after story. I wish today's youth would listen to their elders. There's so much to learn from those who lived through rough times. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us. I'm on my third time through it. Distractions - you know how that is. I don't want to miss a thing. God's blessings on you and yours!

Donnie, I’m one and oldest of seven children. My Dad was in the middle of 13, mostly boys. Which is what they wanted when you lived on a farm. But you’re so right grandma always was pushing food when you stopped by. She made the best sour cream cookies. I have tried to duplicate them but can’t do it. She didn’t have a recipe just by look and feel I guess. I’m one of 58 first grandchildren. We always went to Grandma and grandpa’s for breakfast after church Sunday morning. Then us kids would play. At Christmas when we’d get together we would practice in the basement Christmas songs we were going to sing for the adults. Us 58 first cousins had 104 children the last I knew more have been added. I have no clue how many great- great grandchildren there are anymore. Or great-great-great there are. Of course grandma and grandpa are gone now. But my folks are still here. My grandson and his girlfriend had a little girl last November. So that makes 5 generations with my folks. We took the 5 generation photos at Easter. When my grandson was born we did 5 generation photos then also.

Thank you! This brought up so many memories of my grandparents. I agree, I can’t wait to be reunited with them one day also! You said so many truths…my grandmama is a lot of the reason I believe in the Lord. She was not educated as the world, they were farmers in eastern NC. But she read and shared her Bible and love of the Lord. She and my aunts prayed for all of us kids as we navigated life. I pray for my grandkids and kids everyday. Most of us made it back to the Lord. She taught me how important prayer is and that we never give up on ppl. I wish I had listened to how she cooked also…I was too busy playing on the farm😊😢 But I sure loved her and my granddad. My mom is alive at 84 and I will be calling her and setting up a time to go visit next week. She was, and is, such a sweet lady and loves the Lord also. She is still very involved with her church, giving all of us a great role model. Thank you for this video Donnie. I always love them. And so does my husband who is from East Tn. My brother also owns land in East Tn and I’ll be sharing this video with him. He, my husband and my mom love your videos. God bless you!

Thanks for the memories. It reminds me of my grandpa teaching me how to garden, butcher, bale hay, care for the farm animals, sharpen saws, chop wood, and the list goes on and on. We cared water from the well and used an outhouse because there was no running water. TV, telephones, and even radios were still a luxury to some so we just sit at the kitchen table, play cards and talk.

Oh Donnie, this made me miss my Mama and daddy so much. They were born in 1912 and 1917.They both were hard working, God fearing people. They raised 9 children and we never went hungry. Youngest of 9 children to a farmer and a wonderful mother. They were married 71 years and still in love. Daddy always referred to Mama as his sweetheart. His last words in life was, take care of my sweetheart.

Oh Donnie what an ache in my heart when I think of those precious ones. Walking down a timber road to take a shortcut to Margie’s house. The closeness to that family had no bounds. 4th of July at Grandpa’s with watermelon in the spring and ice cream on dry ice. Kids everywhere playing tag and hiding in haystacks. Uncle Ward’s big red cattle truck loaded with us kids going to Dinner on the ground. It’s all gone, but those memories have taught me how to help the young ones in my life make memories. I teach gently all the time just like they did, and I know it sticks because all of it stuck with me. It helped me roll with the hard punches.

I'm remembering my "Nanny", who passed way back in 1970. She was a 4 foot 6 inch dynamo. Always busy and happy with cooking, canning, gardening, sewing or quilting. She would hum or sing while she dusted and mopped. On summer Sundays, Nanny loved having everyone over to her back yard for a cookout. I still remember her behind the Weber grill, wearing apron and cooking mitts, and wielding a spatula, cooking up steaks, burgers and hot dogs. When I was recovering from a parasite infection at age 7, Nanny had me stay over her house for two weeks - so she could get me to "put meat on them bones". I loved helping her shop, cook and garden. Often, Nanny would let me stay up way past bedtime to watch one of her favorite TV shows with her. Or we'd sit on her front porch, enjoying the summer night breeze and starlight. We shared many thoughts. She surprised me with a children's illustrated bible - and I wish I still had it. I'm looking forward to meeting her again in Heaven.

Donnie: Thank you sir. I remember the smell of my Auntie Biddy's wood stove with here secret recipe for oatmeal cookies cooking. I never knew how she did it. I spent a life time ordering oatmeal cookies and they were NEVER the same. 40 years later I asked a cousin HOW DID SHE DO IT?? He smiled and said: Vinegar. I had my lady try it and IT WORKED!!!! Thank you to family for remembering that secret recipe...We all know what family is about. As I said: Thank you Mr Laws.

my grandparents came over from Italy, never really learned English, so I could never communicate with them about life in Italy, or when they came to New York and how they lived there till they came to Connecticut. I never learned Italian, They passed when I was a teenager. so much history lost. I did not find out much until I did ancestry searches and learned more. My dads father died at age 28 in Brooklyn NY during the 1918 flu. and he had a butcher shop there. wish I knew more about him. with people who could have told me about them, they are all gone now. sad. blessings Donnie and thanks for all the history you provide

Morning Mr.Donnie.I reckon I was one of the lucky ones. My son was the 5th living generation in the family on my Daddys side. My little Granny(great-grandmother) could take nigh onto nothing and feed a ton of us grandyoungins every Sunday after church. Grampaw now he was a story teller. One my sister still talks about is how a cowbell got on a milk cow. Grampaw said it grew there and when it got big enough he would have to saw it off. I knew better being the oldest but my sister squalled like a banshee. She went running into the house hollering Grampaw was going to saw off the milk cows neck😅.We all had a laugh over that one. They were good God fearing people and I miss them dearly. Until next time God Bless

This was such a reminder of my childhood! My parents were older when they had me back in '64. So they had both gone through the Depression and WWII. When we visited with grandpa & grandma or my great uncles/aunts, after we ate together, the men would go outside, the women would stay in the house. It wasn't any fun listening to the women! So I followed my dad and uncles😂 The stories!!! Oh my goodness! I enjoyed that so much. If they didn't want me following, they didn't say.

Thanks again, Mr. Donnie, for another wonderful video. I tell people I have been so very blessed in my life. I knew all my grandparents, 2 of my great-grandparents, so many aunts, uncles, great-aunts and -uncles, first, second, and third cousins, and so on. I can remember my great-papaw Cloud piling a bunch of us in the old green Ford pick-up with 5-gallon buckets to gather butternuts, hickory nuts, and black walnuts, taking lard tins and milk pails to gather pawpaws, persimmons, and blackberries. Two family gatherings for each side of our family each year. There were so many of us on Dad's side that we used three hay-wagons to hold all the food. Euchre games lasted all weekend long, horseshoes got as much use being pitched as they did on the horses and mules. This is too long already, but there are so many sweet, sweet memories. Bless you, Sir, and I hope you're continuing to heal.

Good morning Mr. Laws. I so enjoy your videos of the elders.I remember my dad talk about my grandma trying to feed her 6 kids Every time they had fried chicken she would tell them to save the neck piece for her because it was her favorite. He said he just didn’t know why she wanted the neck piece until after he grown. That’s a mother’s love. I never met her for she died at a young age,but I have a lot of the old stories.Another great video as always!God Bless friend!❤️

Mr Donnie, oh what I wouldn't give to be able to go back to Grandma and Grandpa's just one more time, you know to taste Grandma's cooking again, she could take a taters and soup beans, make some cornbread, she could feed an army...so if ya left Grandmas hungry well, it was your fault cause she tried to feed everyone, and to listen to my Grandpa tell stories about trading horses and mules, and talk to my Aunts and Uncles that have been called home ! Lord I miss them all so much BUT, like you said as BELIEVERS we will meet again one day !! Mr. Donnie thank you Sir for posting this video as once again you have brought me down memory lane, and yes I shed a few happy tears !! Well my friend hope all is well and I'll catch up again on the next video !!!

Thank you Donnie for keeping their memories & ways alive. Oh how I remember sitting on the front porch with family and neighbors stringing and breaking green beans for canning. All the stories and the learning of survival together. My favorite story of these times was that no matter how small your garden or it’s yield was, if you shared what you had, you always had more than enough and the garden and harvest was always bigger the next year. Your basements and cellars were always full of canned goods.

I remember going to visit aunts and uncles, and how glad they were to see us. They always fed us the best food they had. Last time I made a long trip to visit a now deceased older cousin, the younger cousins who lived nearby didn't even bother to come and see me. These Were The Last is a book about the old people of the Ozarks. Maybe published in the 70s? I love looking at those pictures in that book. They had tough lives but still looked happy.
