TRVs can be a pain in the arse if they don't shut off! I picked up some valve clamps the other day to stop the drips. Don't forget if the rad has been balanced correctly you need to make a note of the number of turns on the lock shield so when you turn it back in the rad will work at the correct temp.

I've seen a method where you close both ends, let the pressure off through the bleed valve and close, then just SLIGHTLY slacken off both ends. Then lift the rad off the bracket and tilt forward, giving you enough room to work behind. All depends on how much give is in the pipes, and your way can be used to allow flushing a cold spot rad too!

No need to bother waiting around for it to drain all the way out, just pop your fingers over both ends and flip it upside down, it can be off in 30 seconds that way. PP knows that's the plumbers trick haha!

Love your videos James, you've saved me a packet. Feeling well proud that this went off without a hitch today (5'4 lone female, rad c.250cm long). Desludged the radiator, barely spilled a drop, and it's now sitting neatly across two guitar stands. I can also vouch for using a flexible Tupperware container for drainage, as you can wedge it in/up under the valves. Thanks again (and of course I'm a subscriber!). :)

Hiya James, back again. Window now replaced so time to get the rad back on. It's all gone smoothly including the combi top-up, and I've just turned the heating on to test it. However now the rad's all full of hot water I find one of the valves (the temp control end) has a tiny leak going on. Tightened the nut obviously, but I can see old plumber's tape under there and of course now I wish I'd popped some on (it was the most difficult end to connect as well). Is there anything I can do about this, short of taking the whole thing apart again? This is all behind my office desk and I feel like I can't deal with any more black sludge...

Thank you for this!! So helpful. How long could we leave it like this? We need to remove our radiator to remove old linoleum, put down new tile, and paint the wall behind, so we’ll probably need at least a couple days. If it’s not too cold, could we leave this for a few days?
@greeneaglz2573

If there is some play in the pipes, it is possible to lay some blocks down to support the radiator down on its face, undo the fittings slightly, lift he radiator off the wall and lay it on the blocks and tighten the fittings without emptying the radiator. I have seen this done but it does seem a little risky as if it goes wrong, you could end up draining the whole system.

This looks great - seems you guys over the pond use radiators still while most of our radiators here in the states are 50-100 yrs old. I have one of those - do you think the principals are the same? I have one of the old cast iron jobs from 1920 in my bedroom and I can't reach behind to 1) remove wallpaper and 2) paint... though I am looking at that "small thin roller" comment squinty-eyed.

Also pertinent to note for a TRV simply turning it to 0 doesn't mean it's off. Most have a frost setting so always use a decorators Cap otherwise it will keep dripping when the temp drops. Good video 👍🏻

I was that berk, I found on a long radiator I could lift it off the valve at one end and pivot it out a couple of inches with the bleed valve closed it didn’t drip too much. Then you can get a tray under it. Still I’ll put the valves horizontal next time.

No worries. You do then have to top up the system with more water though otherwise your pressure will be too low. This is usually via a filling loop. Question I have though is do you bleed all the rads then or just the one you have filled if anyone knows? 😁
