Welcome back! IMO, I once worked in a foundry making turbine parts for commercial airplanes. Kevlar hood and face shield would have been the ticket so you weren't so hot and fogged up. Easy to say not doing the sandblasting. Cheers!

All you need to do is hand sand it just to rough up the surface, and then get black rustolium spray paint and spray, let it dry. Maybe do 2 coats and “walla” it looks new and will not rust in the future. I have done this to all my webers and fire pits over the years and they still look new. Try it, you will be surprised how well it works and it is easy.

Whatever the method. Remember rust never sleeps. Possible maybe just keep applying oil weekly to keep rust at bay?
