Replacing the timing belt and water pump on a 2012 Renault Clio 1.2 16V D4F
I did a similar video a number of years ago on a Clio II with a 1.2 16V D4F engine. However, there are a few differences on the III that made this video worth doing.
This clio was bought with 68,000 miles but included no service history or record that the timing belt had been changed, if it was on its original belt then it was due to a replacement. Not knowing the state of the belt a new one was purchased as preventative maintenance.
The belt kit cost just under £100, and took about 3 hours of time to complete.

Great video. I have the 1.2 TCE (Turbo 101bhp) Grandtour dad-mobile model. Do you know if there's much difference with the TCE engine or pretty much the same? Looking to attempt a timing belt kit myself for the first time myself. I also need to replace the radiator/AC condenser which I'll remove the front bumper for so might give me better access to do the belt and water pump as well.

My uncle has one of those clio estates as well with the 1.2 TCE, the wee bit of extra punch does make them a lot nicer to drive. I have not done a great deal of work on his clio but looking at the engine it all looks fairly straightforward. I would recommend going onto e manuals online and getting the manual for it they cover the more intricate differences that might crop up.

Hi, Great Video this with your earlier version shows some good work, keep it up. Please could you help if you can. I have just been changing the timing belt. All was well until the last tensioning sequencing of loosen the tensioner bolt (whilst holding with the 6mm allen key). If I turn the allen key clockwise the markers move anti-clockwise away from the final position (IE the spring is compressing more, so the cam must be loosening the belt), but if I turn the allen key anti-clockwise (ie the same way you first adjust the tensioner) the markers moves clockwise to the correct position. Any ideas why? Thanks
@peugeotCitroen2CV

The tensioner is an eccentric cam, i cant remember just from memory but they normally have a rotation arrow to show what direction to turn them when tighening them. Turn it in that direction until the pointer arrow lines up with the marks.

Have a Modus with a D4F engine and changed the timing belt. I noticed the belt was walking away from the engine on the cam sprocket, hanging over the edge of the sprocket a couple of millimeters. I thought the new tensioner and belt would fix that, but the new belt is walking off the cam gear as well. I did notice a slight play in the crank sprocket (which I couldn't get off by hand and didn't have a decent puller for that job). I wonder if that could cause the belt to move. Ever had such an issue?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 5 жыл бұрын
This play you mentioned in the crankshaft sprocket, is it the sprocket iself or the pulley that goes over it? Never had a problem with the belt walking away or the cranshaft pulley having play in it. I would have the car looked at as soon as possible, it should not be doing that.
@janghes
@janghes 5 жыл бұрын
@@peugeotCitroen2CV It is the sprocket itself. It's only a little, not visible, but audible as a slight clunking sound when rocking the sprocket by hand. As I said, I could not get it off. I didn't want to apply force and mess it all up, so I left it. Tension was set correctly. Car runs fine now, though. No strange noises, engine's happy. I'll open her up again soon to check the belt. My guess was that the V-belt pulley would hold the timing belt into position, preventing it from walking too far off the sprockets. Thanks!

Just 1 question though, is there any torque setting to any of the bolts and how do you know the tension is correct on the belt ? Cheers
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 5 жыл бұрын
Andrew Clarke Andrew Clarke Hi Andrew There would indeee be torque figures for the bolts available in a haynes manual. I didn't have access to a haynes manual, from experience i have a feel of how tight they should be. However i would recommend buying a haynes manual and torque wrench if tackling this for the first time and are worried about snapping or under tightening bolts. As for the belt tension if you look at 22:30 you can see how the tensioner has a pointer that lines up in the middle of a slot.

Thanks for your great video. But I can't help but think that it is a very stupid design. The huge amount of stuff which needed to be removed! That's why my next car will have a timing chain... Think of a Toyota Yaris. But, boy... Renault did a bad job here. I had a Renault Super Cinq once, which was a very simple car. Those days are gone, obviously!
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Thanks for the comment. I don't really think its a stupid design, although I don't personally work on cars I am involved in the design of machines in my day job and trying to get a collection of components to fit within a set space is a challenge in itself. Having to remove a few extra parts to get to something is considered acceptable. In reality here, on the clio, the 3 (not a huge number) other components that had to be removed added no more than 30 minutes to the job over the MK2 clio I worked on in the past. No special tools are required to do this. Timing chains, in theory, are ok, provided they don't experience timing chain stretch issues or tensioner wear. My sister was driving a K12 Micra which had such issues the cost of replacing the timing chain was more than the value of the car. BMW 2.0 diesels from what I understand can give expensive chain related issues, and the PSA Prince engine which replaced the old belt driven TU engine is a headache. However if executed properly which I think Toyota does on the Yaris, and the car is well maintained with regular oil changes then the chain can be a reliable option.
@FrankypankyV8
@FrankypankyV8 5 жыл бұрын
@@peugeotCitroen2CV On the hindsight you mentioned some good points. Yes, Nissan did a terrible job with the timing chain of the Micra (apart from the fragile steering house). I just miss the simple way cars were designed. Thank you for your response and time!

Hi, few days ago I screwed up with cambelt change in such engine. The belt has slipped away on the side of the pulley in the few sec. test run (for about 5 seconds was ok, then fastly run out on the side of pulley and slipped away). Do you think this may be because I didn't put back the accessories pulley on the crankshaft pulley? Only the bolt was in place.

The crankshaft pulley for the auxillary belt should act as a retainer for the timing belt keeping it from spinning off.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV First of all, great video! Really helpful, considering the fact I am planning the same job on my Clio in the coming weeks. Can I ask you a few things? Why on earth are you using tap water in your cooling system? Demi-water I can live with to flush the system, but tap water? I mean isn't that a bad idea considering the fact it contains calcium? Aren't you afraid it will contaminate the cooling circuit? Also won't the water evaporate eventually? What brand of coolant are you using?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
@@SuperWhiteBarry Hi It is not 100% tap water in the coolant system, it is mixed with antifreeze/coolant which is designed to work with coolant. I assume that it has the necessary chemicals in it to prevent calcium buildup and other such issues. I have always mixed tap water with coolant in any cars ive worked on and never had any issues. Not sure on what brand, it is whatever my local motor factors stock. Just make sure not to mix different types of coolant, there is green, red, blue each with different chemcical compositions and mixing them can cause unwanted chemical reactions.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Hey I did the job on the Clio yesterday, it was a real pain in the you know what, but I managed and learned a lot considering the fact it was my first Timingbelt change job! Also your video was very, very helpful once the job started. ;) The car runs great, it seems better on power and less sluggish, although I also cleaned the Throttle MAP Sensor and changed the spark plugs. I have only one minor issue. Sometimes I hear a squeaky sound for a second even a split-second and can not define what is it. It happens usually when reducing speed and going back on power, for instance going back to 2nd gear for a sharp corner and accelerating again. Also when putting it in reverse on the parking lot and getting on the gas, or from a standing start while being in the first gear. I did everything as the Haynes suggested and checked everything twice: work order and procedures, torque settings etc. literally everything. I also changed the auxiliary belt and pulley and tensioned it up properly: you can twist it maximum 90 degrees at the longest point. You have any ideas? Any help would be great!

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
I believe it had the original belt, the old one still had some ink markings that said renault and there was no paperwork with the car to suggest it had been changed. You might also notice or not notice slight marks on bolts on an engine bay from when they are removed to do a cambelt job, if everything looks undisturbed it is another indication the belt is original. The rule of thumb is with a used car, if you have no record of a belt being changed it is best to do it as the cost of a new belt is a lot less than the cost to repair what happens if a belt snaps.
