Gotta love those old engines. I started an old Troybuilt rototiller after it had been sitting for 25 years, according to the owner. A little gas, and I did clean the points on it and it fired right up. Couldn't find tires for it, since they don't make 8" tires anymore. Neat rig! Thanks for sharing.

Sure miss the ole garage! It’s was compact and produced great videos there. The new shop is now starting to fill up with much larger projects.For me I’m very comfortable working in small spaces. As it makes me keep my workshop clean and free of stuff. Loving your videos 😀😀😀👍👍👍👍

There's that engine again! First engine I ever owned myself, got it in a deal. Used it with great success on my first go cart. Mated to a 5 speed Riding mower transmission it was literally the perfect power unit for that shit show of a cobbled cart. I think you should do a bike build with it like you were contemplating before in a different video (and maybe you already did, and I haven't come across it yet). Thanks for all you excellent videos Mustie1

it worked out great on the bike too, in my latest video you can see the bike in the backround

This inspires me to try and get the Homelite C5 fired up. Ran when parked probably back in the 70s or so. Apparently Grandpa used it in the day..

Not much smoke for it not having run in so long! Gotta love that exhaust. Did that in my younger days for loud go carts - haha. Very nice find and clean up to start it. You're work on the carb will have it running sweet for one of your bikes!

Oops, forgot you already used it.

I used to have a couple of the old REO reel mowers with these engines on them when I was a kid. The unique thing about them is they turn the opposite direction of most small engines.

Model number MK is the 6.5:1 gear reduction output. The G is the year of manufacture, in this case 1953, the same year I came off the assembly line. The displacement is 5 cubic inches and they were rated at 1 3/4 horsepower. By the late 50s they acquired a "high compression" head and the power rating went up to 2 1/2 horses. I am currently restoring a 1951 with 2:1 reduction to power a drill press....

David, I love how you put that. "The same year I came off the assembly line". XD. Is that a dog pe..... in Hillary Cl...'s mouth? Nah, couldn't be. ;-)

Sounds like A old go cart engine or mini bike engine to me. Awesome little engine man.
@jameskaufmann59798 жыл бұрын
The output is off the camshaft, which accounts for the reduction and opposite rotation of the shaft. Also there is only one cam operating both valves. A very neat arrangement.

Hi Mustie 1, Have you ever thought about making up an adjustable mounting stand that you can mount any small motor on for testing also for getting it to start and run, the type of adjustable stand that I am talking about is sort of similar to car hoist lifting arms that swing from side to side, you know where the rubber pads are on those arms, you can either remove the rubber pads from the arms and have have rigid mount, or leave them there and drill a hole through the centre, I will cut a long story short, the mounting stand will have to be so that it slides in and out also back and forth, I just thought of this idea today the 28/6/2017, by using this type of stand, it will save you from clamping it down to your bench or to a block of timber, to design and make the stand will take time, not a 5 minute job, I do hope this idea will help you in the future. @mustie1 I ultimately gave it back, after not finding the right kind of wheels to fit. I am guessing it was from the 30-40s. It had wooden handles on it, and the tines were made from steel rod, not sheet metal. I now have the replacement that was made of a motorless chassis, for which I bought a $5 motor at a yard sale. This one is from the 60s, with solid rubber tires.

I had a Reo lawn motor on my motorbike when I was a teenager, I put on my whizzer motor bike after that motor gave up the ghost. after I got it mounted it ran really well and was a lot of fun ride as that motor would idle down to a tick over and yet seemed to be more powerful then the whizzer motor was. the motor came off a Reo lawn mower we had. I wish I could find another motor like that but I think it is not possible. PS I am 70.

Some years ago (like maybe 40?) I found a Cooper gas-powered rotary lawn mower with a Cooper-branded 2-1/2 hp 2:1 reduction motor that, I swear, looked identical to this REO. PTO was from the camshaft, and man, that little engine could SING! I don't remember what the stroke was, but the bore comes to memory as 2". Should have kept it!

@64gravely I went to the Troybuilt dealer nearest me and they told me there were not any 8" tires available anymore. I looked on eBay at the time too. That was 5 or 6 years ago now. The place where I bought the newer frame from didn't have anything either and he had all kinds of brands there, of used stuff. It's done now anyway...

hey that motor was made here in my home town and I want to say it was made by the reo truck company know now as Oldsmobile
@alanhardman24475 жыл бұрын
Oldsmobile was the original company. Eli Ransom Olds lost the company to General Motors in a hostile takeover. Some folks just won't learn to stay away from the investment wolves. Seen it thousands of times! Anyway, R. E. Olds went on to found the REO truck operation which also produced these mowers, as well as a number of other manufacturing concerns. Some were partnerships, as well. When he died in 1950, he was no longer connected to any of them. When I was a kid, I used to sometimes work for a rancher who had a 3-ton REO flatbed truck we hauled hay with. BIG ol' 6-cylinder engine!
@johanlaurasia7 жыл бұрын
You should have pointed out that the band REO Speedwagon gets their name from that company. The logo on there is more recognizable as the band's logo than it is from the company.
@ROTAXD7 жыл бұрын
John Laury true. I wonder if Kevin Cronin or any of the guys from the band had a connection to reo mfg.
@johanlaurasia7 жыл бұрын
They named the band REO Speedwagon, from the REO Speed Wagon, a flatbed truck Doughty had studied in transportation history, and the initials are those of its founder Ransom E. Olds. Rather than pronouncing REO as a single word as the motor company did, they chose to spell out the name with the individual letters each pronounced ("R-E-O").
@alanhardman24476 жыл бұрын
John Laury - IIRC, REO Speedwagon actually licenced the name from the Diamond REO Corporation, which was a merger of Diamond T and REO truck manufacturers. And, coincidentally, Diamond REO, the country band also licenced their name from the same entity...
