Hey Life On Wheels. Thanks for sharing this video. I just have one question of the 350z's. My 2004 is having some noise from the Passenger side from inside the cabin, sort of a whirling noise...after watching this not sure if it could be the differential driveshaft sending that noise up front. First I thought it could be the "Carrier Bearing" which supports the driveshaft itself or something, at this point not really wanting to take everything apart just yet. Can you help?? Thanks...subscribed
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 6 жыл бұрын
I can try to help! Fist off when do you notice the noise? Is it metallic sounding, grinding, or just sounds like air? There is no carrier bearing the drive shaft is one pice self supported.

Hey thank you for your reply guys, appreciate that. Well to say it sounded like air...kind of a whirling sound. It is this sound, may be a good idea to turn up the volume. Here is a video from another KZfaq account kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJaontagudzZfXk.html This happened id say with the last couple months, not that it is getting worse...hope not. Maybe you guys can help make the call? Thank you very much in advance!
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 6 жыл бұрын
Sprydo7 I have honestly never heard that sound before. I would have to be there in person to pinpoint where the sound was coming from. At this point it's guessing. It could be simple like air filter, belts, or oil change in the engine and transmission. I would have a friend go around and under your car to find where the sound is coming from.

Best video ive seen yet and i want to do it but i have a question that seems stupid but pls reply. What is a torque wrench im in europe and have never heard of it and these torque specs seem relly important , is it possible to do it without this rwech because i only have regular tools.
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 5 жыл бұрын
A torque wrench measure the force put on to a bolt or nut. It is important but not necessary. It is to make sure that the bolt or nut won't come loose when you are driving. If you have done suspension parts and haven't had issues with stuff coming loose you should be fine. But I would recommend getting and looking up torque wrenches to add to your collection of tools! I hope this helps you out!!
@HOMEP_1
@HOMEP_1 5 жыл бұрын
Thx for replying, i did some research and mostly you can go without the wrench but the problem is that you can overtighten the bolt
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 5 жыл бұрын
@@HOMEP_1 I've personality never had an issue with over tightening bolts. I have had bolts fall out from under tightening. For me the torque wrench is just peace of mind especially when pushing a car to it's limits!

Hay next time just let your exhaust swing and use shock spring clamps and long bolts into the axles and clamp to subframe will help stabilize the diff on your install. Good job it took me 2 days by my self. 350z brothers

Hey man, awesome video, first and foremost, but what were the symptoms you were experiencing, other than visually, that your rear diff bushing was shot, I know wheel hop is one of them, Im currently experiencing what I can only explain to be a "thudding" kind of sound in between shifts, and after inspection my diff bushing is def cracked, and doesnt even have any of the "goo" left in it, was just wondering what your symptoms were and if you thought the new diff bushings would solve my issue? (2010 Nissan 370z)
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for taking longer than normal getting back to you! Wheel hop like you said is one major sign. Another like what you are experiencing is a "thudding" between shifts, you should hear it coming from the rear end. I still had goo in my bushings but the diff it self was hitting the sub frame causing the thudding between shifts and coming back onto power hard. I do believe new diff bushing will help and do it soon. Mine was so bad it broke the lsd so I was doing one tire fires. You will also notice in corners (with the new bushings) the car wont be as tail happy and should fell more solid. You might not notice it now because you got use to how it feels but that was one thing I noticed after installing them. Good luck!!

No worries, thanks so much for the response!! I will be replacing all 3 diff bushings this weekend, Im glad you clarified all those things because I was nervous about doing this whole install and have it not be my issue, Im experiencing the diff hitting the subframe currently, so definitely going get it taken care of this weekend, thanks so much for your help and the very informative video. I would definitely be mad if I broke my diff !!!! Now Im nervous, how did it break the diff?
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 6 жыл бұрын
No problem! I can"t say for sure how it happened because I did drive the car hard and drifted it around. I am sure it was a contributing factor. With the torque input into the diff and it being loose from the bad bushings, it would twist putting more stress on the axes and making them harder to turn. In return it put a lot of un-necessary stress on the gear set. That's just my hypothesis, it also could be the previous owners drove it just as hard as I did and something had to give. I would also check your u joints on the drive shaft to make sure they didn't flat spot because of that. With the extra give in the diff it could be a possibility, it happened on my car. In that case the whole drive shaft would have to be replaced because it has non serviceable u joints, but luckily there are good deals on ebay for low mile drive shafts for the z's if that is the case.

Well, I haven't been really beating on it, and had to flick it sideways once to ensure, this morning, that the diff is functional ! These bushings are going in this weekend, thanks so much for your help !!

Did you drain the diff before the procedure ?
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 2 жыл бұрын
I did. Once you take the shafts out It will start leaking all over. If you are digging this far into the rear end, It would be a good time to replace the gear oil in the diff.
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 2 жыл бұрын
Hold up I'm wrong. I got confused with another car I worked on recently. The 350z drive shaft and axles are bolted to flanges on the diff. You do NOT have to. It would make it lighter if you do it the way I did.

i can’t get the bushings off the diff, i’ve tried hammering them off with a socket, i tried burning them but they won’t budge
@LifeonWheels
@LifeonWheels 5 жыл бұрын
Zach Dillon Have you tried hammering them out after burning them? If that doesn't work you may need to take it to a shop to press them out. This usually won't cost over $30 to have that done. If you have a hydraulic press available I would use that. Another way is to take a drill and a saw to it like the carriage bushings. Let me know how it goes!

About 6-7 hours. That's with messing around trying to burn the bushing on the diff off, eating and figuring out tools and the process. So with a good understanding and the tools I used I think about 5 hours.
