Big Tom and me knock another column job out for this Home improvement store.
After the first 14 we did I would say we are pretty much pros at this point. But every job has its mis haps. Following some Bad advice I make a mistake and cost us a good amount of time! The life of a welder fabricator isn’t all sticking pieces of metal together, sometimes it’s installing them too. But we’ll do anything for the money! Well almost anything. Make sure to like and subscribe, and will someone please help get Tom sponsored by Bang Energy already? I’m getting sick of them getting free advertising from the man!
Here’s a few of the tools I used in this video-
Metabo grinder- amzn.to/3kPWA3i
Uvex face shield - amzn.to/3qOIaEi
elgin ruckas headphones- amzn.to/3x3RdCl
Black stallion Gloves- amzn.to/3x39nEm

The venting at the bottom is so when they dip it in the galvanizing tanks the fluid moves freely through it. Whenever I built structural that’s where we put the vents.

I work in plants and refineries, and we always put the nut and washer on the anchor bolt before hammering it home. If it doesn't go down all the way, then spin the nut down and cut the top of the bolt off with a cutting disc or bandsaw and make them all uniform height.

I put the nuts on before pounding in anchors about 98% of the time, as long as the nut is a couple threads below the top it's good to go. Sometimes there's cases that anchors can't be pounded with the piece installed, and need to be embedded before the part goes in. When I need to pound in an anchor without a nut, or need to be able to take the nut back off, make sure your hammer is contacting the anchor correctly at 90' and it will not mushroom.

I just found your channel yesterday and I’ve burned through a few hours watching already. Love your informative content I think you’d be a great teacher when you get old and your body falls apart from contorting it into awkward positions and moving steel you have no business trying to move. Ha Anyway I ALWAYS drill my holes into the dirt in case the anchor cleats don’t catch or I gnarl up the threads (even though I always put the bolt on first)I can just beat the anchor into the dirt and use the same hole then just jam a new anchor in. Keep up the great work

I have put in hundreds of wedge anchors. I always drill the hole at least 1/2” or more deeper and run nut down below striking end to get mostly in then gradually back out-while driving in to get maximum inbedment. If you want to be extra safe, you can screw on a rod coupling and drive coupling down. If you are putting a lot of anchors in, you can always bring a die and oil to fix threads.

Always worked for me too. I keep the nut almost flush with the striking head, this way the threads nor the nut get damaged and I am able to easily spend the night off and put any washers needed underneath it and then crank her down. If it starts to pull and the wedges slip you can double nut to hold the anchor or cut a slot for a screwdriver, or ghetto with vise grips 🤙🏽Enjoy the videos @meltinmetalanthony

Now…… if you guys want to up your game (to Rock Star Status!) try this: Carefully get anchor started (without nut) switch roto hammer to (hammer only) place bit on anchor (still without nut) and let tool do the work. Leave 1/2” above plate for washer and nut. Here is something else that will help you with wedge anchors. When installing 1st anchor, you notice it is really hard to get in, lightly ream hole on next one with same bit or buy a new one. When they wear out they get smaller. I don’t work for Hilti but in my experience, they make the best anchors and especially/most importantly the absolute best bits because their tips have (4 cutting edges.) I have hit rebar (more than once in my career) hilti is the only bit that will cut thru it if you feather it and spend a little time- however, If I hit rebar the first thing I do is pull out and drill at a slight angle to possible miss rebar when you get deeper- if you don’t, try angling a different way. Then install anchor, leave it up a minimum of 1”, put nut on and carefully hit nut to straighten.

When I use to hammer in anchors for a construction company. We were told to always put the nut on and put it at the top of the anchor. So you are smacking it and VERY little of the anchor otherwise you mushroom it and can't get the nut on.

Always nut before you sink wedge anchors, just keep the nut two threads below tip of anchor and don't tag the nut when sending it home! Excuse the naive question (not a welder), but it looked like the steel roof joist was through-bolted to the column between what looked like a couple of unistruts after punching holes for the bolts. Why not just weld the joist directly to the column and spray some red oxide or galvanizing paint on it? Is the bolt supposed to be a pin allowing some movement? Same with the top connection on all those rotten posts at the garden center or whatever it was. Just wondering. I've worked on large sites in a different specialty, refineries, SAGD and such; all the structural red iron is engineered and fabbed in a factory and obviously has to be bolted/torqued or welded to spec during erection. But this seems a little more arbitrary. Do you still have to replace the connection 'as found'?
@tobiasstrehler6355
@tobiasstrehler6355 2 жыл бұрын
Not an expert but as far as I know bigger metal structures move a bit due to heat expansion. In some cases this small, in this case angular, displacement can lead to fractures in the weld wich reduce its integrity. Bolts alow for a bit of movement wich is in most cases enogh to accommodate the displacement. Hope this helps

At the risk of being accused of being a "Debbie Downer", I'll ask the question: Are you adequately covered for liability for the type of work you are performing? It's all fine until it isn't. Working on these types of projects exposes the contractor to huge liability risks. There are a many folks out there who would attempt to enter into a contract like this without adequate coverage. Bottom line: If it's structural, you better be certified and be covered under your specific policy.
