Replacing the distributor cap on my 99' Acura Integra due to misfires in cylinders 3 and 4. Engine was running rough on start up before hand, and the check engine light came on with codes 303 and 304, indicating misfires in cylinders 3 and 4. The distributor cap had some build up on it, and after replacing the check engine light went off.
I uploaded this video because I was having trouble with my car. I don't expect to make many video on auto repair, as I am an amateur and far from being a mechanic. Hope you enjoy this video!

I just graduated with a BSME, so yep, finished my engineering studies! Thanks, for 16 you've got a big head start over me, didn't start really getting into cars until college. Best of luck with your future, and as always if you ever have questions let me know!

Yeah, bought it at 84k, and that was 5 years ago. Haven't put too many miles on it. I've still had my fair share of problems even with low miles, but basically it just amounts to I have to add oil constantly.

Too funny. Was this in your earliest days on KZfaq? Time is a very funny thing. You sound like you went from this, as an engineering grad with empty pockets, to your current KZfaq SuperTuber status. Here you admit minimal experience, and seven years later your videos seem made with the confidence and comfortable ease of a seasoned pro -- primarily due to your excellent, comprehensive technical approach. Hence, Engineering Explained. ; ] One of my favorite channel subscriptions.

If you want to take that cover off and there is a bottom portion opened, you can crank it a couple times to spin the rotor to gain access to the screw.
@EngineeringExplained

Sure. The front tires (fwd) are connected to the transmission, which is connected to the clutch, which is connected to the flywheel, which is connected to the crankshaft. The crankshaft is geared with the camshafts with a timing belt. The distributor caps is geared 1:1 with the camshaft. So, by rotating my tires with the car in gear, the rotor should rotate.

i have an e30 (1984-1991) 3 series, great car, bought my 85 form the original owner for $500, its a great solid car, cheap parts too. you should definitely get one, this is my first car also.

Yes, there are individual coils for each cylinder, and the timing can be regulated by the crank angle.

I didn't replace the rotor because after sanding off the end of it (and replacing the cap) it worked fine. And yeah, thought about that just sanding the cap, I'm sure it would have worked but the auto store basically told me what to do so I think they deserve the $18. It's not like if I took it to a mechanic they'd sand the cap and then say "on your way." I'm pleased!
@EngineeringExplained

No, that was simply because my engine was cold in the beginning. It keeps the revs higher for about a minute until it warms up.
@EngineeringExplained

Yeah I had to get my radiator replaced as well, apparently a common problem with integras at about 100k miles. I just bought a code reader for $20 on amazon, works great haha. The problem is the connection in the passenger side is sort of blocked with some plastic. I think I may just take a dremel and grind off some of the plastic so I can actually attach my scanner.

Good idea to sand the rotor lightly with sandpaper. It oxidises over time. Also leads usually fail before cap. For most cars you will never need to replace the rotor.
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 12 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wanted to pull the plugs since I do burn oil, but I don't have the tool for it, so I'm gonna order one. Also, I did scrape off the residue on the rotor tip to clean it up since I couldn't get it off.
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 11 жыл бұрын
Which would require getting to the crankshaft.
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 12 жыл бұрын
Well if it's shaking then you're probably misfiring. If your check engine light is on take it to an auto parts store and they'll usually read it for free. If it's a misfire they'll probably recommend spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.

Because the engine was cold, just started it. Goes down to about 800/900 once it's warmed up.

Hell yeah, that's awesome. I'd like to do the same with my Integra. I'm planning on getting a new car in 2 years, and when I do this will become my toy. How difficult was it to swap the engine? My shop experience is pathetic.

Don't know if this works for everyone's vehicles, but disconnecting the battery on my truck resets all the codes...But! after doing this, turn your key to the ON position, but do not start your car. You may see some of your gauges on your dash move. Wait for a couple seconds and you may see the gauges move to their initial positions. Redo this process several times until none of your gauges move, and then it is OK to start your car. This is just some systems resetting.

lol mine has 22k when i got it, I had to add water constantly until i figured out myself self that a radiator plug was corroded and leaking,only problem was to get to it the transmission had to be removed, (thanks engineers) so that made labor cost high but at least it don't leak anymore, you should also one day buy yourself a code reader i got one for a little less than 90$ its expensive but worth it, if you are a DIY person.

In the beginning, you were at 1,500rpm's while idling at the end you were at 750rpm's idling. Is that because of the fix? Where before that problem was also causing gas wasted?

I'm guessing jbones was referring to you not replacing the rotor. Whatever...i just wanted to say that you might also could have just used a real fine grit sand paper and slightly sanded those contacts. I had a similar problem but my car wouldn't start and it worked for me
@jfv65
@jfv65 12 жыл бұрын
plugs that have been installed 10 months ago are hardly new... just saying. i would have pulled those and checked them for insulator cracks and checked/set the electrode distances to spec. pointer: next time scuf the rotor tip with some sandpaper to clean that up as well. and just to be sure you could have measured resistance between centre contact and rotortip. If it had measured more then 0 ohms you would have had to change it.
