Replacing toilet Flange on Lead Pipe? That's not what I intend to do on every loose toilet bowl call. But the harsh reality here in N.Y.C is that if you pull a loose toilet chances are you'll find a lead pipe. Unless the flange was soldered from day one, that the bowl will come loose before it's time.
I was called in for this loose toilet and as soon as I pulled the bowl and scraped away the old wax gasket and bingo, the lead was peened over the flange with no solder. Big mistake! I personally recommended replacing the pipe, but these people could not afford that expense along with replacing a section of the floor.
Replacing Toilet Flange on Lead Pipe can be a pain in the butt if you've never done it and I don't recommend it for the D.I.Y. guy or gal. So I worked my magic as best as I could and bought this customer a few more years before the inevitable. Enjoy!
Regards & Happy Plumbing
Bob

Fantastic job. Some real experience and old school plumbing saves the day. Doesn't really matter what the wiped joint looks like as will be hidden when toilet goes back. Main thing is it doesn't leak.

Great job. Really like the tinning method allows the lead bend to bond together well with the flange. You install a speedy valve there , 1/4 turn valves much more reliable. I’m sure you know that though. Love your work.

Nice, I didn’t realize lead stubs was even a thing before I found out my toilet had one attached to the old cast iron stack. The last installer shoved an ABS flange with gobs of silicone into the lead and screwed that down… glad I saw your video to see how it’s supposed to be soldered! My plumber recommended hammering the lead over flat to a new subfloor as a sort of “flange”, then putting a wax seal, brass flange over that, screwed down, then wax flange over that and toilet like normal. I’m gonna try my hand at soldering to a brass flange, I think that’ll last a lot longer!

If you can securely fasten {CRITICAL} the brass flange to the sub-floor. You can then peen the lead over the flange followed by the wax gasket and you'll be good to go. Thanks for checking out the video! Bob.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos I wish I had your tools. The lead bend is essentially even with the concrete floor, and there is a vent just 1” below the surface of the concrete. I am planning to grind down the concrete so I have enough lead to peen over onto the brass flange. Do you have any tips on how to carefully move the lead away from the concrete so I don’t accidentally cut it while I am grinding?

Really like your videos- I’m not going to challenge your superior experience, but I wonder what the reason is to caulk all the way around the toilet and not leave a “spillway?” I recently pulled up one of my toilets to replace it and found there had been slow leak under the toilet, but the caulk kept it from showing itself, so the water eventually seeped down under the tile and rotted out 2x3 ft of subfloor -it was quite a mess which I would have caught a lot earlier if anything had seeped out to warn me. So that’s why I am asking about the reason to caulk it watertight. Thanks!
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
In my early years the old timers used plaster to set toilets and would finish it off by swiping around the bowl with there finger. It was a mess! The caulk makes a much nicer appearance and actually aids in keeping the bowl from moving. But your point is well taken , if the bowl is not set correctly you will trap water.

Thank you for posting this and showing how to do a real fix as compared to my hack job with a repair kit. What's your view on Danco Hydroseat flange repair kit or one of those twist and set PVC flanges that have a rubber seal that you screw into the pipe? I had no idea they used lead pipes but I was at the family house where my family member was complaining about a small leak under the toilet and I smelled sewer gases so I thought the floor guys who worked in the house last year just didn't use a wax ring or something but as it turned out, the entire flange had come out and there was a lead pipe. The house was built in 1994 so I was surprised it wasn't PVC and since my knowledge is in electrical and not plumbing and it's an hour's drive so I had to do the fix on the fly and went to the local home Depot and got the Danco Hydroseat. The hydroseat has a funnel that you put into the pipe and you put a wax ring around it and then screw the kit into the floor. The wax ring is supposed to seal the area around the pipe. then you sit the toilet on top of that. They said it doesn't need a wax ring, but I put one in anyway. It's holding pretty well (once I made a couple of adjustments) with no leaks or odor so now I'm wondering if those things are ok to use longterm.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos I actually had that on my cart first before seeing the hydroseat. I think the one in your video is a bit cleaner because with the hydroseat, I still had some sewer gas leakage and had to go back and double up the wax ring. Awesome channel all around. My wheelhouse is electrical so I love seeing other trades' pages.

It good job Bob; will last another 50 years! With respect to your comment about garbage disposal units; are they legal in NYC? Garbage grinders tend leave a trail of food in the waste line which can invite sewer rats into the home; my cousin lifted her toilet seat cover to find a rat emerging from the trap.
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
They were not legal for a Loooooong time, but they finally caved and allowed them. I agree with you 100%, people tend to throw more garbage down their drains resulting in more clogs. I don't like them at all!

I’m old school and still use wax, but I have used the Sani-Seal ( the green one) and Fluid master versions. If you have a perfectly level and plumb surface I see no reason not to use them. But at the end of the day it’s rare to find a perfectly level floor, for that reason I’m a wax gasket guy for life! Thanks for checking out the video, Bob.

Hi, I’m a do it yourselfer. I’m remodeling my bathroom, I have a lead sleeve. I’m not willing to try to solder a brass flange on. Can I use a Oatey pvc replacement for cast iron closet flange? Thanks.
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
You might consider using one of these, insert them into the lead, tighten the three points to expand the gasket and most importantly secure the flange to the floor. www.oatey.com/products/oatey-cast-iron-closet-flange-replacement-298848992?filter=

@@BobsPlumbingVideos yes…lol. I did buy that. My concern is that the lead is not that clean or round. I’m afraid of the slightest gap. Is this a legit concern? My second and scary option, but probably the best is to cut the cast iron back and finish with pvc. Thank you so much for responding and helping me out!

Hi Bob, I am in the middle of renovating my bathroom and when we took the toilet up the flange had the lead folded over with no screws. Now that we pulled the lead up to remove flange it’s sticking out about 2 inches from sub floor. I guess my question is can the oatey insert be used? One plumber told me they would just bend it back over the flange and soder like in your video. Thanks in advance
