Next, slide out and remove the bolts from the sewer flange and place them in the trash bag. Lastly, clean up any remaining wax with the scraper and paper towels and place them into the trash bag. The sewer flange should be clean of any wax and debris.
Once the sewer flange is clean, inspect the flange to ensure that it is not damaged in any way. If the sewer flange or sub-flooring is damaged, they will need to be repaired accordingly.
Wax Ring Replacement
If the sewer flange is in good condition then the new wax ring can be installed. To install the new wax ring first remove the soft wax ring from its tray by griping the center plastic hole carefully, and pulling off the plastic tray. Next, place the wax ring onto the sewer flange with the narrow end of the plastic lip inserted into the flange. Center and adjust the ring as needed. Now slide the plastic holding washers down the mounting bolts and set the new bolts into the mounting channels along the edge of the toilet flange and slide them into place.
Toilet Replacement
Once the wax ring and mounting bolts are all in place then the area is ready to have the toilet remounted. Lay a straight edge on the floor next to the mounting bolts to help mark the bolts position. Begin by placing the base of the toilet over the sewer flange with the mounting bolts passing through the openings at the base. Once the base is in the correct position push down on the toilet compressing the wax ring around the toilet's drainpipe.
Now that the toilet base is mounted, take the plastic cap rings and slide them down the mounting bolts, followed by the corresponding metal washers and nuts. Tighten both mounting nuts by hand until they are firmly in place. When both bolts are hand tightened, take a socket wrench and finish tightening the bolts so the toilet does not move at all. Keep in mind the toilet's base can only withstand a few pounds of torque.
With the toilet securely mounted to the flooring the bolts can be trimmed to a quarter-inch past the nut. Using a mini-hacksaw carefully cut off the remainder of the mounting bolts so the entire bolt can be hidden under the plastic cap. Once both bolts are cut, snap the plastic cap cover over the bolts for a clean safe appearance.
After the caps are fastened, connect the water supply valve's tanks hose to the shank of the fill assembly. Turn on the water supply valve and fill the tank of the toilet, looking for any possible leaks. Make adjustments to the water level and any internal parts if necessary. When all adjustments are complete, cycle the toilet and look for any leaks. Once all inspections are done replace the tank lid and the job is complete.

Loved the many similar thoughts on carpet in the bathroom, next to the toilet. Obviously, that home has never hosted young boys (or grown men). My wife once tossed a paperback novel I was reading because I left it on the floor, too close to the target area for two young boys. The book: Sum Of All Fears. I never finished.

Final step is to start cussing, When the wax ring is not sealed correctly and do it all over again. Or when you can't get the water supply line to stop that little drip that seems to always happen. You must cuss all that way to the hardware store for more parts. Then once you have it fixed you must stay in a bad mood all day because you had to work on a toilet. As you may tell been there done that. LOL

@HomeownerSeries - Just curious, do they not put the wax ring at the bottom of the toilet and then lower it onto the flange anymore????????? I have always heard that is the way it is done. Not only that, aren't you supposed to sit on the toilet and rock back and forth to help squish the wax ring ??????????????

I've always heard the opposite (wax ring starts on the flange). At least that's what multiple plumbers have indicated.

This is the best way to install a wax ring. Other dumb videos show a more difficult way to install the wax ring by pushing the wax ring underneath the toilet first, then lining up the bolts and lowering it to the floor which can be a disaster if the wax ring shifts unknowingly due to gravity while you try and line up the bolts.

Make sure the wax ring has no gap with the floor before sitting the toilet on it to prevent a leaking wax.

Unfortunately, with that setup, the wood would rot and the the toilet would fall into the kitchen before you'd feel the carpet getting wet by a leak.

They usually put a massive wax ring down not this tiny one. That and there's a defective bubble on the bottom. do'h. which Benjamin Franklin said shoulda never been put down on the floor. let alone left the factory. Toilets aren't exactly expensive but dad thinks they are. So he ends up spending a good chunk often on a sunday when the wax goes bad.

I'm happy I don't have that terrible kind of connection on my toilet. It's just a standard elbow and a rubber joint. The whole thing looks flimsy, because the toilet is not connected directly to the ground. You can see at 2:23 that it's not fastened tightly.. At 1:28, you can clearly see that the toilet is held to the ground indirectly with 6 small wood screws.. The two small bolts are there to fasten the toilet to that blue ring.. Not very reassuring

never seen a bathroom with carpet but i know cleaning up a old wax ring can be very nasty but i know its not a bad idea to replace everything on a toilet if its needs it then you dont have to worry about stuff breaking in the long wrong for years to come what we did on ares

I am confused, in this video he places the new wax ring into the flange on the floor, then lowers the toilet onto the bolts. This SEEMS like the better way to do it but in other videos the guys press the wax ring against the bottom of toilet and THEN lower toilet onto the bolts. This seems like it could lead to issues of bumping the wax ring out of position accidentally? Anyone have experience to share?

+Annony Mouse This is the same way that I've changed rings for a long time now. Especially since I'm working by myself and within very tight spaces. The hardest part is keeping the bolts in line and lowering the bowl down over the bolts. Thats when I wish I had another set of eyes to help guide over the bolt.

slide a couple plastic soda straws sticking up from the bolts - zero the basin down to the flange following the straws and you should be all lined up. This trick also helps with installing some ceiling lights

What a great idea! I recommend everyone do that even if you're really good at it and extra lucky. It's a huge help. I just used this for a really tight install and it worked like a charm.

Carpet was probably used because the subfloor is plywood - which usually indicates an upper level bathroom or possibly a mobile home. You shouldn't tile over plywood b/c it will flex under bodyweight which will then cause the tiles/grout to crack. So they used carpet... but should have chosen either linoleum or vinyl flooring instead.

I've done it but it ain't easy, especially the first time. Today one of them dropped right down. I found it too late laying on the pantry floor. Some day I'll fix that.

How is it possible the toilet base can only handle a few pounds of torque when it has to support the wait of a human being on top of the toilets own weight?

They meant that over-torqueing the nut will crack the porcelain. I hear people use this incorrectly all the time. Torque is measured in foot-lbs, not lbs. People frequently say pounds when referring to air pressure too. That is measured in psi (pounds per square inch).

I wish I'd have measured the distance from the center of the drain hole, then drew a line 2 feet forward from the back wall. Screwing in the bolts to the adapter from the base of the toilet was a PITA. Since there is nothing at the bottom to keep the bold from turning, what's the right thing to do? My toilet wabbles now. I think it's because the floor is lower. How do you tell if the floor height matches the flange?

You don't need to plug the sewer line of you are replacing the wax ring right after getting the old one removed. This is only necessary if it's 24 hours of longer that the flange will be exposed then it should be plugged with something like a rag.

Wow. You must have incredible balls. I cut half-way through the bolts (manual hack saw) then tap and they snap off. About 30-45 seconds per side. Are you sure you're using the right edge of the saw blade?

yeah just noticed that. We've been dealing with this modern stupidity since we moved in in 2000. Want rot? Looks like someone tried to remove the linoleum couldn't and stuck the carpet on top. Sigh. Whats worse is the foam padding underneath is turning to powder. one can DIY only to a certain point. Carpeting a bathroom. Especially around the tub and toilet is just stupid.

I read on several DIY sites that some people prefer to put it on the flange to keep if from falling off when you lift the toilet. Of course if it falls off, you basically have to buy another one.

@asadastronaut Maybe I am some kind of animal, because even animals have enough common sense to put carpet in an area that has the highest moisture level from; overflowed toilets, steam moisture from showers, urine sprinkles from pee hitting the water...etc! All of which gets trapped in the carpet and creates odors!

When I saw the carpet next to the toilet, I immediately dismissed this video. In fact all the toilet manufacturers show doing it in reverse, i.e. put the wax ring on the bottom of the toilet, not the flange

Carpet is in my bathroom but my toilet area is linoleum. I hate carpet in my bathroom, but I bought it this way. The good thing is it doesn't smell and didn't get wet. I use rugs.
