I got a Walmart rescue VFT in February when my local Walmart was finally selling them for spring and not in September. It's a little light starved but it's a quick growing plant! Trying rn to acclimate it and my other CPs to be outside, it was cooler longer than usual. Great vid on this topic, I do agree that we all been there impulse buying amd wondering how to take care of it😂

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I agree. If it wasn't for impulse buying I wouldn't have my Dente VFT that I've also bought this year! Acclimation is tricky, especially where I live, it can be colder longer such as night temps staying under 50 (northeast America). What I usually do is once it stays above 50 I also take my Nepenthes in my garage and they like it, in fact, they grow more pitchers in the garage then in my house.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub

I'm in the exact same situation right now. Bring my neps in at night as it's around 45 to 50 degrees at night. It also makes watering tricky when it's 80 degrees I'm day then down to 45 at night...

I 100% believe you. The problem is, people who have success growing them in window sills are outliers. I have people message me every day that are trying to grow in a window sill and they are completely light starved. When giving care instructions to beginners I always advise against window sills. They are welcome to try it, but it's the easiest way for most to slowly kill their flytrap.

Tap water works just fine when its under 100ppm/tds(mg/L) but ideally should be below 50 along with sufficient draining to flush out excess minerals. Chlorine evaporates from tap water in a day given a large surface area while chloramines require chemical reactions such as ascorbic acid dechlorination to neutralize. Pet stores sell dechlorination solutions to get rid of chlorine and chloramines but make sure the ingredients are safe for cps. Your city should have an annual water quality and treatment reports that has tds/ppm and information on whether they use chlorine or chloramines. Cities that rely on ground water would usually have too high a tds but rain and snow melt runoff water is usually safe. I live in the pacific northwest and my city uses chlorine with water tds at around 20-25 year round and my flytraps/sarrs/darlingtonia have been fine for a decade.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 11 ай бұрын
This is exactly why I don't recommend using tap water. The vast majority of people who grab a venus flytrap on a whim at Lowes are not going to contact the city about levels of chlorine in their water. This is why for most people I just suggest to avoid tap water. I'm also in the PNW, my tap comes out about 100 PPM. I do not recommend that, 50 or lower should be used. I'm just trying to help people who are amateurs and casually picked up a vft. The best advice is just to avoid tap all together, too much involved for your average plant owner. Also, the zero water pitcher that I recommended filters out 99% of chlorine. I stick to my claim that the zero water pitcher is 100% the go to tool for watering carnivorous plants.

Would fish tank water work (with or without fish like can I use fish to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in a rain water container or use old fish tank water that would likely have fish poop in it) I am also already treating tons of city water to get rid of chlorine, chloramine and hard minerals but I think it still leaves some minerals in if it is not safe should I be worried about how I am storing rainwater (like if the container has metal components or is running off my roof that could pick up nutrients from decommissioning leaves) and for my last question would water from air conditioner dehumidifiers work or do I need to be concerned about what it may have come into contact in the attic (insulation, rusting metal, etc.)

@@williamsutton7 Small minnows should be fine but you should always test the water first and same thing with roof runoff. I wish i could say more but everyone's experience is different. If the water is deemed safe, start with inexpensive plants that you have multiples of first just in case you loose them

What about Spring water. I collect water to drink from a spring on my property and wondering if is would be ok to feed my traps from this source. I’m probably leaning to No but would appreciate a professional answer
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ай бұрын
That's a great question. Honestly, it's impossible for me to answer though. It all depends on where you live and the mineral count in the ground. You would need a TDS meter to measure thr waters dissolved solids. I go over some of that in this video! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q72IpLCIlpm6iI0.htmlsi=sJlSOD-ZC1VNXNNz

Question: would it be OK to leave the Fly Trap outside on the porch if the night time temperatures dip down? We're in north Idaho and we're going to be going through spring now, so it'll be warmer days hitting in the 70-90 range and dipping down to the mid to low 40's sometimes 30's at night. Will it cause the Trap to go into a dormancy or will it be ok? Story time: I've gone through like 3 fly traps sadly. I first bought the $6 fly trap from Winco on a whim for my kiddo Grim and they then named it "Hydra". I bought from Amazon some Kapecute carnivorous plant soil mix that has a 70:30 mix of sphagnum moss debris and perlite and we have a gallon jug of distilled water that was _supposed_ to be for my husbands CPAP but he never uses and gave it to us for the plant. I also got a bottom reservoir plastic pot from Walmart to replant the trap into that'd hold water at the bottom. I also bought a container of small mealworms from petco, this was back in January and the worms that have been kept alive are now HUGE so we have to cut them in half to feed to Hydra. Hydra 1's traps got eaten by our cat so we got better at keeping him away. Hydra 2 and 3 were put in the bigger plastic pot immediately but because I put 2 in the 1 pot they didn't grow very well. Hydra 2 turned black and died, and after I disposed of the dead one I let the other take over the pot. The left over one didn't seem to grow very well but it might have been in a dormant stage? It had one long flower stalk growing but there weren't any traps left because they turned black and dried up. The whole plant seemed floppy and dead so I cut my losses and tossed it, which resulted in Grim berating me and saying it was probably just dormant. So now we're onto Hydra 4.0 and I'm here to try and make sure I don't mess it up. Grim was telling me that the trap is a swamp type of plant but I now see they were wrong and I'm going to give them the link to this video so we're on the same page. Thank you for the tips and I hope I don't kill this one this time. Live and Learn I guess, huh? TL;DR: Have gone through 3 traps and wound up killing them. On Trap #4 and I'm trying to do better.

Hey! Which part of North Idaho? I'm in post falls, I'm very familiar with your weather. I just moved all my flytraps outside with this nice weather that we've been having. They should be fine now. I usually look for overnight temps to stay at 40 or above. Flytraps are hardy though, they can do 30s as long as it stays above freezing. They even survive occasionally freezes. How about the northern lights the other night? Hopefully you were able to go out and see them!

It's hard to pin down an exact reason for this. It could be not enough light, not enough water, possible over handling. Sometimes flytraps will stop closing if they have been fed too much. Hard to say for sure.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ай бұрын
Could be a few different things. Likely a water issue or a pest issue. Too much water can lead to crown rot which created a rapid decline. Spots and dead traps can also be pests, like spider mites. Maybe join a group and post a Pic. Sometimes you can help get the issue identified..

That entirely depends on your area and how much minerals you have in your ground. To be 100% certain with well water, you would need a TDS meter. I've seen well water measure at 10 and I've seen it measure at 500.

Why so many requirements? how do/did they even grow in the wild without any care? My concern is more with the water, you said they like it from the roots but in the wild they get it from above so that's contradictory to me.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 6 ай бұрын
They don't get it from above in the wild, only occasionally when it rains. They live in areas that have a lot of ground water. High parts of boggy pine sevannahs. The areas they grow have had so much water ran through them its stripped the ground of its nutrients. There is a reason they only grow natively in one specific place in the entire world. You need the right conditions. The conditions I talk about in the video are as close to possible as the conditions they thrive on in the wild.
@GGJordanFanatic
@GGJordanFanatic 6 ай бұрын
@CarnivorousPlantsHub That makes a lot of sense, and I appreciate you taking the time to clarify my doubts. I took for granted that there would be a "regular" amount of downpour where they grow.

They grow along the ditch banks in hot, humid SC summers. We used to play there and trigger the traps. They grow in poor nutrient soil in boggy areas. Then they die off in winter and come back in summer.
