I hate so much when people say they "don't believe in" abortion, like Lake does here, or homosexuality, or whatever else. Abortion is not a thing you can believe in or not, like a religion; it's a medical procedure, and restricting access to it has potentially lethal consequences. Framing it as a matter of beliefs obscures the fact that they want to deprive people of rights, although it does lay bare that they think laws should be written according to their own personal beliefs, consequences for the people be damned.

I'd like to respond to her saying "it's not about abortion." That's right Kari. It's not about abortion to us either. It's not like people want to sacrifice the unborn and relish in their blood. It's about protecting the life, dignity, and privacy of the adult mothers. In a world where you don't protect and defend the adult mothers, or stand up for those things, you're going to discourage A LOT of planned pregnancies. For example, if a mother to be has to consider what state she's living in before getting pregnant in case there are medical complications that would render her dead by the hands of her doctors by the dictate of the state, maybe it's better not to get pregnant in half the country (as it stands today... and if republicans get their way, it could be the entire country). The world, life, politics, are all hard enough without legally - with law enforcement - compelling pregnant women to bear children to term. Indeed, in such a world, with such politics being dictated by religious sentimentality, the aborted are spared a lifetime of callous disregard and indignity; what about being morally motivated about that? These mothers are often regarded in the eyes of the religious righteous right as harlots. That's all that waits these unborn in such a world. Damnation and ostracization by god's self appointed. We choose choice. We choose a better world. We choose a world where the life that is here and now has dignity and rights. We choose to not have a world where women that experience miscarriages don't have to be interrogated by law enforcement. Given that most women who seek abortions are already mothers, this line of thinking would basically incarcerate mothers for homicide. I don't see any scenario in which fundamentalists and conservatives who insist that abortion is murder can avoid creating more children reliant on this state. And when you look at the states that oppose abortion and are pretty much banning abortion, these are already states that don't have a great track record supporting children in need at all. I don't see any coherence to this. It's similar to the right-wing response to immigration. All I hear is that we should close and militarize the border. But how do we continue to live the lives that we are living without that massive labor force? Do these voters really believe in their heart of hearts that there is a native born population able to do plumbing, electricity, tiling and masonry, carpentry, all of that- and that that native-born population would suspend worker right and work for the rates that the immigrant labor force is being paid?
