First I would like to thank you for your service, I am an Australian and I owe my existence to the brave soldiers who saved my country from the Japanese in ww2 and the communist expansion after the end of ww2. I felt exactly the same way. I feel they disrespect the flag everytime they wear it as a cape. When this last indictment of tRump came down I went out and bought a flag bunting and put it up to celebrate that we might once again be able to proudly fly a flag.

Your experience rings very true for me, too. I graduated from West Point in the early 00s and was proud & happy to find ways to show some patriotism with flags or apparel. Then came MAGA, and now I have to tone things down significantly or people will assume the absolute worst of me.

Maybe if we didn’t reduce patriotism down to just flying a flag/symbols then we wouldn’t have this problem of the patriotism being co-opted by the right. Actions speaks louder than symbols. Show your patriotism by voting these fascist out of office.

Though I also think "freedom" is something we have to look critically at because solidarity always limits freedom. The only way you can obtain 100% freedom is by taking it away from everyone else. For example for a company to have the freedom to pay whatever wages they want they have to take away the freedom of workers to strike and organize. Many of the confederates also defended the freedom to hold slaves. Freedom for all does mean you need to limit the freedom of individuals if they were to come at the expense of another. This actually is part of the constitution as it was considered the job of the federal government to protect vulnerable groups against the oppression of stronger ones. Of course just because the constitutions says that doesn't mean it was always followed but it did give the federal government the power to protect minorities when it did choose to do so.
