This is what I fear the most of being a bus driver and I don't want to be out there on the road and have brake failure especially driving down a mountain or any other type of road condition.. I pray that the most high always keeps protection around me and the students who ride my bus everyday...

Wow. That was some incredible driving, holding vehicles that size on a winding mountain road at those speeds. Plus an unbelievably lucky catch wedging the runaway bus up onto some soft ground with the second bus preventing a rollover accident.

@efra3379
@efra3379 7 жыл бұрын
Andrew S most likely lost its brakes due to debris hitting the air tanks. These buses have air brakes. As you saw, they showed how the air pressure dropped which is when he lost the brakes

Efra The point of air brakes is to lock up when there's no air. You're implying they work the opposite way.
@captainredneck0683
@captainredneck0683 6 жыл бұрын
Older air brake systems did not work that way. Basically if you ran out of air, you had no brakes. In a modern system the spring brakes would have locked them solid and stoped them real fast.

Yes this bus had an air brake system ,they showed the pressure gauge low, and he tried pushing the YELLOW parking brake button. The thing that probably happened was a line blew, or he simply used up his supply of air from over braking. They should have kept it low gear and crawled down the mountain slow and easy boys. Always check your system before embarking on a downhill journey... glad they were all saved at the end.

The sad fucking thing is that north america deliberately chooses to go with this 100 year old technology called air-fucking-brakes. That fuckin shit is basically a dinasaur anywhere else around the globe. NA though chooses to leave hydraulic brakes behind their back, regardless of the fact they work light years better. Seriously, those fucking drums are another addition to the death trap that na trucks and buses represent. I drove a scania in europe and a 2014 freightliner in Canada. Light fucking years of difference. Just felt like the government did not give a fuck about my life and those of all other commercial operators. There's not a chance in a million years that I'm gonna put my son on any of these joke pieces of shit school fucking buses. To this day I don't understand how parents put their most precious kids on these suicide buses that haven't changed aince ww1. Just blows my mind. And that's why I no longer drive heavy duty.

Given that the bus had a manual transmission, it should have been possible by repeatedly dipping the clutch to control the speed and to work it eventually into 1st gear. I drive a school bus albeit with an automatic transmission and on steep slopes I always select L and let it go down on the gears rather than the brakes.

The break lines might leaked and rusted away or the gear might failed or the break might be empty because breaks lines are made of metal and if moister from rains gets wet it can start deteriorate and rust away causing drivers to lose their breaks

This bus was obviously made before 1975 with cam brakes. With those when the air pressure runs out they had no brakes. Since then all trucks and buses are required to have spring brakes. Now when the air pressure drops below about 50 psi the brake button will pop and activate the brakes unless the brake itself is defective.

So the emergency brake failed, and the service brake. The emergency in air brake vehicle controls the vehicle not the driver. The parking brake and the service brake can be controlled by the driver. The emergency brake automatically will set when the air pressure hits below 60 psi an alarm will sound warning the emergency brake is about to set. Around 40-35psi the parking brake valve pop out, indicating the emergency brake is set. In order for this to happen if he had lost control of the bus, emergency brake would be smoking.

This story is not totally accurate. Every vehicle that has air brakes has a spring brake that pop on when the air pressure drops to 20 psi. Also a light and warning buzzer comes on when one on the air tanks hits 60 psi. Also the drivers, by law, need to do a brake check before you depart. If he had, he would have discovered an air leak and none of this would have happened. Yes I do drive school busses for a iving
