*** THIS IS A RE-ENACTMENT *** It was filmed in CALIFORNIA... it was aired on Rescue 911 as they recreated cool and amazing shows. Another show was HEARTS OF COURAGE they did a recreation of this and it was film in Cape Breton, with stunt drivers, but they made it look like Wayne and my Dad (Lou) were driving.

This may, or may not be a re-enactment, but I KNOW this does happen because it happened to my brother, Larry, in Utah coming off Parley's Canyon. His brakes gave out at the top of the mountain and he was already headed down. Another trucker friend was behind him, and took the chance and passed him, got in front of him and applied his brakes for both of them, and slowed him down enough to go into the run-away truck lane and get stopped. Larry told us the story himself. He was terrified, but came out of the experience with a greater respect than he already had for his fellow-truckers. Those mountain roads can be treacherous and having a driver take the chance to help you get stopped is amazing.

Louie was my great uncle. This story was told to me as a child and now I recently told my kids about it. His legacy lives on!

When I was a kid in the late 1950's we had a trucker who attended our church. One day his two little kids came to stay with us, and ended up being with us for nearly a year. Their father had a runaway truck up in the Grapevine, between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. He went off, and his truck exploded when it hit the ground. He was pulled out of the burning truck by another trucker who had seen him go off. He was badly burned, and was put in a burn center in LA. His wife went to be by his side as he fought to live. He was there for nearly a year before he could come home. He never got the name of the man who saved him and was forever sad about that. As soon as help arrived he had left without anyone getting his name. He said he never passed a truck after that, that he didn't wonder if it was the man who saved his life. This was an awesome video. It reminded me of that time so long ago. There is not anything greater before God, than being willing to risk, or to lay down your life for another. These two glimpsed each others soul that day.

That reenactment was both scary,and amazing. Grew up in the mountains in Colorado,seen runaways,and just how terrifying it can become.

I remember seeing this as a child and I grew up to be a trucker. Thank god most mountains in the US have ran-away-truck ramps.

The embrace at the end it just goes to show you how amazing friendship is and how tight knit the trucking community is

I remember it like it was yesterday. I'll never forget how tight he hugged me that day after we stopped! Wayne god bless his heart was my best friend. I retired two years after he did. It was a story to be told, I'll tell you that!

This was back when television actually had some intellectual value. MOST, if not ALL, of the crap on television now would insult the average two year old! I rarely watch it anymore unless it's a rerun of a much older program. I sure watch a lot of videos now.

As a Truck driver not being able to stop loaded is a nightmare, happened to me a few times but thank God for keeping me safe, when things like this happens stay calm & think theres always a answer to any problem...Stay safe & God bless😊

We need more courageous men like this in our society. These days, if you do that, the trucking company would fire you for intentionally wrecking their vehicle and putting yourself at risk.

WOW! That sent shivering old memories down my spine! Back in '82 during my 2nd road year I burnt my trailer brakes on a canyon road westbound coming out of Denver. My Astro95 Jimmie didn't have a Jake Brake and I grinded the rig up against the canyon wall get it stopped...

What an amazing story. So glad that it worked out so well for those boys. Great job on stopping your friends' rig. Well done, and God Bless you for putting your life on the line for a friend. You're a very brave man to do what you did. You deserve a medal for what you did.

i live about an two and a half hours from kelly’s mountain, where this happened and i remember my dad telling me this story when i was younger. i seen this video on facebook not long ago and going through the comments i was so sad about the people commenting and saying this is made up or the roads aren’t that bad. this story is true and those who say the roads aren’t bad clearly haven’t been there

This is why all carriers should have CB radios. It can be useful to help others who loose their brakes as well.

Rescue 911 taught a whole generation the amazing lifesaving potential of the 911 system. My home county even decided to get 911..........in 2007.

When I was a kid I watched rescue 911... At age 23 I helped a woman who was having a seizure in the middle of a IGA isle... She was about to swallow her own tongue. I remembered a episode about how u use a pen to flip the tongue down then use the pen sideways to prevent it from happening again. I was so relieved when the ambulance got there. You never know what u might learn from watching this wonderful old show

Although this happen many years ago, I can only imagine how horrific it could be. It was quick thinking and right decisions that made both drivers safe that day.

This was the 1st Rescue 911 episode I had seen when I was a kid and immediately, I became a fan of the show.

This is one I had never seen. Wow, that was some crazy courage and skill ! As they said "He was a friend before that, but he's a special friend now"... Like guardian angel-type friend. What made Wayne pass Louie back there ? Angels.

The driver saved that man's life. As an X trucker, I would have done the same with not hesitations.

The premise of the show was that it contained true stories of rescues. Most stories involved professional rescue workers, but a few stories (such as this one) were about rescues by civilians.

That was real smart of him to use his truck to help his friend slow down his run away truck.

thats so much for putting that on here! That's been so many years ago, but I still remember seeing it on television! I had forgotten all about it! Kudos to the drivers. That's super. Just imagine if the flatbed hadn't decided to pass in the first place. The poor guy wouldn't have had a chance.

A truly beautiful story as a truck driver for a farm hauling cattle & heavy & wide John Deere tractors I see the grand scheme of him saving his partner’s life. Good luck to both of you & God Speed, for he , or Christ had to be Co-pilots to both of you, I too was saved by Divine intervention on 08/09/2003 when I was shot 7 times at my folks farm house, during a home invasion, thus I know first hand about being saved by Divine intervention, thanks so much for sharing such a lovely story from such a noble profession.

35 years in the hammer all over this USA and Canada!! And have seen and been through some bad!!!!! Times but this vid makes me proud!!👍

Moral of the story: if you're going to start down a long "treacherous" grade, stop and inspect your brakes first.

I have driven 110,000 pounds and that scared me the entire time. I don't drive trucks anymore, but I have a LOT of respect for truck drivers. An old guy told me that you always go down a hill in the same gear you would go up the same hill.

Also truckers have got some balls man driving in the weather in the snow on those huge hills man props to those men and women who do it without them there would be no America.

They need to make this show again I love this show I remember it from when I was a kid my mom was a firefighter and we always watched it with her when she was home thank you so much for posting them I hope you post more or all of them if you haven't already.

This was an American TV show. They probably did that so U.S. viewers could more easily understand the speed and pressure.

If I'm not mistaken they did this reenactment up on Everitt Memorial Highway which takes you to the top of the tree line on Mount Shasta in Northern Cali. Extremely beautiful drive! Steep grades and definitely sharp turns like described on this show.

It’s been 39 years since this happened. I was 17 months old at the time. When I saw what was happening, I was terrified because I didn’t think that Wayne’s truck would stop in time because of the road they were on and he lost his brakes. But thank goodness he was saved. My brother Andrew was born in 1984 but in September 14 8 months after this happened.

God this must've been absolutely terrifying. The choices leading up to this were insignificant on their own, but ultimately they saved a life.

The rpms have to match your road speed.With no brakes and the truck accelerating,Its unlikely you would be able to get it into a lower gear

There's a short story called "Runaway Rig" about a semi losing it's brakes on a hill. A good read.

The video says he had a 47k pound load but then later says his truck was way over the 80k pound gross limit at 49 tons. If that was so then it is no wonder he lost his brakes trying to go down such a steep grade. Compression brakes did not come standard on trucks like they do today so most likely he did not have any. Exciting story!

Wow. Forget the truck, save a life. Truck can be fixed or another one can be bought. Professional quick thinking.

Trucking in mountainous areas as well as hills in general is very dangerous without adequate brakes. If the driver had done an air brake test, he would have realized that he had low brake pressure. The air brake test tells you everything regarding your air pressure but visual inspection of the brakes and hoses is paramount.

it's a re-inactment, to start with. It wasn't even done on the same mountain. And i'm curious as to just what Canadians are supposed to talk like. Most trucks still register air in Imperial measurements and a lot of drivers still use MPH as reference.

I've been a driver for 20 years. I can honestly say that the trucks of 1984 lacked safety innovations like self-adjusting brakes. But even so, this truck should have had a low-air warning buzzer. Maybe it didn't work, but it was supposed to. Also, no trucker should EVER descend a mountain grade in any gear that requires application of the service brakes (brake pedal). Let the jakes do that work. And if your truck has no jakes, stick to Kansas or South Florida!

That is just awesome stuff. God is good all the time.

Im now 37 but watching this as a kid I learned skills I have actually used to save lives and help with injuries. This was back when tv was actually good.
