Royd Kennedy is my dad. He is 68 years old today and has retired after 40+ years in the fire service in NZ and Australia. This event happened on my mum's birthday, and she first knew about this when she saw it happening on the news, and she was so glad he came home. Royd is the father of six children and grandfather of five grandchildren. Authored two books after this event. He always speaks highly of his coworkers from that night in the first instance and acknowledges he and Shirley wouldn't have survived without being protected by the other firefighters. If he had died that night I wouldn't be here either, as I was born four years later. I'm so proud that he's my dad and he is very loved by his family. Hope Shirley, her mum, everyone else featured in this video, and those who were part of Shirley's recovery are blessed these days also. Thanks for uploading this.

The people I respect the most are firefighters. I saw them working on putting out a car in flames in a very busy avenue, just like 10 metres away from me and it was such an experience. They gave it all, they worked really fast and put it out in less than five minutes... They are great. May God always protect them.

craig forster it was incredible wasn't it. This is an event that has always been stuck in my memory. Not only because of Royd & his station mates but also because of all the vollies that went out that night, I remember it being a freezing cold night & I felt for them all out there. Everytime I go past those trees I give thanks to Royd & the teams that attended that night, because like the trees there are hearts that keep beating

WOW Never seen this episode on TV here. I was 12 when this happened, live about 4km from the crash sight, Yep could see the flames from home. Planes were diverted as that is pretty much the path the planes approach the airport. The truck would of been coming from an oil treatment plant just down the road from the crash.

Here in NZ, where the event in this episode occurred, the later seasons of the show were renamed Rescue 111, as that is the emergency number here, and too many people were calling 911 by accident. These days you can call 111 or 911, you get through with either.

As I fire science student am I the only one who recognizes the huge risk these firefighters are taking? They have to have nerves of steel gigantic balls to take this risk, usually they just set up manifolds and back off but they had no choice cause someone was alive and at risk. mad props. I think the only reason why it didn't blow up it the amount of water and foam they put on it to absorb the heat.
@VhenRaTheRaptor

That is why one has to respect firefighters. Because they are the people crazy and brave enough to run into a fire to try to rescue someone. If you are ever caught in one of these you have to hope like hell there is someone that brave and courageous on site to rescue you because that is often your only hope for survival.

And not just stop and go,I'll just hang out here ,and oh my daughter is wanting to come back cause she forgot she didn't want to go inside the mall...again so stupid,never learnt that driving on the roads ,roads are not your personal parking... Smh, so thread an actual second chance ,that God's angels were trying third best to block the big rig,to get it to move on over with the little white car acting as a deverter,but the trucker just had to cut his wheels back to the left lane.🙄 Now I'll go back and watch the hero's save the idiots.

Reminds me of an accident that happened near where I live several years back. A truck carrying caustic lye tipped over on the interstate and it leaked everywhere. Numerous people had severe chemical burns and many more got respiratory injuries from breathing the fumes. Amazingly, the truck tipped onto a car carrying a man and boy, and both were extracted unscathed.

Tahoe Smith firies have strange minds & mentalities. It's very hard to explain, what you might find scary they find awesome & exciting. Fire is a living, breathing beast, while dangerous it is also beautiful. To see that fire, it was awesome. I can still remember it today. The height of it meant it was seen across much of the city. The fuel truck had just been filled so that was feeding this huge, growing fire. For years you could see in the road where it happened as there were marks left on the side of the road. But the biggest reminder is the trees, they never died but they never grew back properly.

Angelica Yeshuah technically it was but it wasn't, all drivers know to look for people stopping & dropping off there as it happened & still happens all the time. If the person trying to race out of the carpark in a horrible place without checking for traffic, hadn't have done that then the driver would have just gone around as normal. Instead he lost control.

I said I take that long to pull a fire hose to help that little girl it will it should take less than one hour to pull up fire holes and put that fire out to save that little girl if a fireman from a different state poems that fire holds quicker than a fireman in a different rsq911 it should not take that long to pull a hose off a fire engine it should take less than two minutes and pull it

Ahmahn Minter-bey as you weren't there at the time & had no idea of the conditions, the positions of the vehicles, what the fire was like or anything else, you cannot criticise them. You also have no idea about the equipment on the trucks at that time, where they had to come from, the traffic, or any of the other conditions. Stop being an ignorant keyboard warrior & saying what you would do, when you are talking about this day & age plus a different country.
