In today’s video, we show you how we replaced all three of our roof vents! The original vents for our RV were not universal, making it very hard to locate new vent covers. Because of this, we decided to remove and replace them all. Great decision!!!
The best process for this is to make sure that when you tear out the old vents, scrape up ALL of the old tar/butyl tape and sealant! You need to have a clean surface for everything to stick to. Though we didn’t show it, we wiped everything down with alcohol before each new step... It’s just a good habit to get into.
Here are the 8 easy steps:
1) Remove the old vent and clean every inch of the roof’s surface
2) Check to make sure the new vent will fit in the hole
3) Apply butyl tape over the pre drilled holes around the edges of the vent
4) Place the vent where it needs to go… make sure it vent opens towards the back of the RV!
5) Drill new holes (if necessary)
6) Secure the vent on the roof with screws (preferably rust resistant)
7) Clean up all of the excess butyl tape from the edges of the vent
8) Seal everything with Dicor self leveling lap sealant.

Here's a little tip: The hole on the side of the caulking gun close to the trigger is actually a cutter. Place the nozzle from any caulking tube into it to the desire length and pull the trigger. It will cut the tip of the nozzle off. There usually is also a small metal rod approx 5/16" in diameter and about 4" long that is attached to gun at one end with a rivet. That rod can be rotated outward and used to clear the nozzle of dried material in a previously used tube (as opposed to sticking a nail into it).Wipe\\\\ Wipe any residue off the rod before rotating it back into place to keep it from drying/sticking to the gun next time you use it. A professional painter showed me that after Id been using caulking guns for years and never knew it! Good videos but an even better venture. I went out in my 85 trailer for what was to have been a couple weeks in the forest. Its been over 2 years now. Will NEVER go back to brick n mortar housing with a mortgage/rent and utilities. Im set up for fully off-grid living. Did the mods gradually over couple of years and still continue to make improvements. Most of the improvements I made came from youTube vids like yours. Regret now not having recorded all that Ive done. I love my little trailer and lifestyle. Happy travels...livin' the life :-)

Wow what an amazing story. You know how to live the good life :-) Thank you so much for the caulking gun tip! We had NO IDEA all of that was on that tool. What genius ingenuity haha

To anyone removing putty / tar / caulking I highly recommend using an oscillating multi tool with a smooth blade.

Thank You!! You both have given me renewed hope for my project...1986 E-350 Tioga (22,000 original miles). You are helping to develop a great checklist on "what to check out". Yes, I also had overhead water damage...so your video was very helpful! Now I can't wait to get my project under way, finished, and hit the road :)

Thanks for the tips...you are blessed by having a metal roof and is hard to cut verse's a vinyl roof with a metal putty knife. That wasn't butyl tape that was sticky. It's called Dicor Lap Caulking. It is put on at the manufacturer. Butyl tape shrinks but it's best to go over all the vent and roof square with a generous portion of Dicor applied with a Caulking gun. This will ensure no leaks later.

1. Use a heat gun to soften Dicor, works like a charm. Much easier and cleaner. 2. Keep all music out of DIY and demo videos, tour, wildlife, and cooking vids.

I know this is an older video but this is just a tip in case you ever have to remove tar again. Lacquer Thinner. It will melt the tar and you can wipe it off like water.

Oh one more thing if your good with tape try using Thermabond tape, I used it to reseal my roof front and back and down the sides. My pulls outs as well and it is fantastic. Once it's on it there to stay....so much cleaner..a 50 ft roll cost me $100 and even if I had to buy two its way cheaper than the $3000. bill I would have had getting a roofer to re-roof. Something that wouldn't have been cost effective for the year of my RV. : )

Just an FYI, for any future repairs of those roof vents, I could see you were using black interior drywall screws. Those are NOT rated for outdoor use at all. Granted you are sealing and in a perfect world that will work, but it would be better to replace them later on down the road with galvanized or stainless steel screws.

Unless the frame is damaged, save time and just replace the innards and lid. You can seriously damage your roof because some of these are rivited to the roof. Be aware

I use ONLY stainless screws. In fact I'm slowly replacing every one of the 750-800 rusty screws on our truck camper with stainless screws. Money well spent!

Several of the skylight vent kits say "Compatible with a 1-1/4"" to 2-1/4"" thick roof" and one of the comments said the inside sleeve was not long enough and they had to use their old one. Our roof has 3 inch high beams, so add the composite plywood on the roof and a little for the inside ceiling and we must be close to 4 inches thick. From the video, your's looked similar to ours. Did you have issues with the sleeve not being long enough to extend through the roof. Interesting what you said about the universal connector - first time heard this discussed -- would greatly simplify our cache of replacement vent covers. Thanks for the video. Dave

Does the seam between the roof and the front cap have cracked dicor or is it just dirt? Also I noticed that one of your front clearance lights is missing a lens. those lights can be a source of water leaks. While you are up there you should check them all out. Great Video, keep at it.

Awesome! The seam had dirt in so it had nothing to do with the Dicor. Thanks for the great comment and helpful suggestions :) -Michael and Jenny
