This is reset procedure only, if indicator lights keep coming on after they are reset the problem is likely still occurring.
Take the vehicle to have a Toyota and/or ASE technician with diagnostic tools to run through the ABS and braking system.
If you must troubleshoot yourself, next steps would likely be to check:
Computer maintenance codes
Electrical fuses
12 volt battery voltage
Brake fluid level
Brake pad/shoe wear
Continuity of wires to the brake system sensors
Faulty sensors
ABS pump and/or actuator
In this video a jumper wire from an electronics kit was used. Others have used a paper clip as the jumper. Any wire with a small enough gauge would lead to similar results.
Tools that may help troubleshooting issues like this:
Jumper Wire Kit 140 Piece
amzn.to/3Z0bExR
Klein Tools MM325 Multimeter
amzn.to/3PuHVKF

Thank you very much or the clarity on this issue. I just replaced the wheel bearing hubs on the front end of my 2009 Prius, and this caused these brake warning lights to come on. Knowing that I do not have any other issues with the brake system this was all I needed to do. Thanks again, I will be hitting that follow button to see more of your content!

Glad to hear that the process worked to reset the lights in your cat. Most of the time, the lights indicate an issue but sometimes like your vehicle, they just need to be reset. Thank you for your support.

I did my own brakes on my 2009 Prius and the brake, ABS and VSC lights came on and braking was unacceptably dangerous. With a PAPERCLIP and jumping the pins like your video shows, my brakes now work like a dream and all of the lights are off. Thank you!

2009 Prius, recently had left front wheel bearing assembly replaced. When I started my car afterwards, noticed "Brake, ABS, & VSC" lights stayed on. In your video you mentioned "connecting jumper wire 5th hole on top 4th hole on bottom". I stopped the video and noticed holes connected were opposite "4th hole on top & 5th hole on bottom" and that's where the jumper wires were placed. Today used a small paper clip & after a few times trying to connect jumper wire (4th top and 5th bottom), at 66 my eyesight is not like it used to be, had to get real close, and finally got them connected. Turned car on, diagnostic screen popped up(all o.k.), pumped brakes 8-10 times real fast, and brake light went out, other ones were still flashing. Will go down tomorrow as I ran out of daylight, and do again as I left the jumper wire connected. Thank you for the video! It was a big help.

I do appreciate your video. Very helpful!. Have made several attempts to clear the remaining lights on 2009 Prius with 202,000miles on i.When I start the car and remove paper clip, the mentioned lights(ABS, VSC & exclamation point) remain off, but when I start down the road, within a minute or two they come back on. So I suspect a defective/damaged Speed/ABS sensor. Will be checking associated fuses tomorrow. My son last week changed my left wheel bearing hub assembly, so something might have happened with the mentioned sensor. I di find your video very helpful. Thank you!t@@TryAdaptLearn

Well tried several times using paper clip method per your video. Lights on dash would be off while car was not moving, but came back on after going down the street. Checked fuses..all fine, even unhooked 12v battery for 10-15 minutes. This morning was pushing dust shield away from left front rotor, was able to reach my hand in behind brake rotor, lo and behold found the left front wheel sensor unhooked. Took car over to my son, he pulled the wheel off, and found the little bolt holding the sensor in place had been sheared off. Were able to remove remaining threads, and secure the connection. Started the car and all the same lights were back on, so got out my trusty paper clip, and did the process again, removed paper clip (lights again off), drove a little piece up the road, lights did not come back on. I drove about 15 miles home, lights are still gone. Thank you again for the video, after doing it several times, was able to memorize the process. Problem is solved.

To reset the internal DTC codes for ABS, while displaying this diagnostic screen, press and release the brake pedal 8 times within 5 seconds. Turn the car off, remove the jumper wire, and start the car. Note: for me, I think the error was triggered when I had some brake fluid come out of the cylinder when replacing the rear brake shoes. I adjusted the rear brakes, and bled the brake lines to get the air out of the lines, and then cleared this error. It worked! For me the ABS code was 42 and the VSC code was 65.

Thank you for your detailed description. One good thing is that you added the reason why your light came on and how you fixed it prior to resetting the light. There are many reasons why these specific lights come on for this vehicle. First assumption should be that the lights and sensors are working and there is a malfunction in those systems. Your comment explains your issues clearly.

@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn 8 ай бұрын
Sorry, I don’t have any other videos for the dash lights. In normal operation the lights should come on then go off. If the infotainment module is not on then the display could be damaged and/or a more serious issue. If the dash lights and infotainment are all off, it may be time to have a second person to help troubleshoot issues and/or take the vehicle to a Toyota certified technician. Sorry it’s hard for me to understand the “key” part of the question. It looks like 1 min21 seconds is still speaking about the jumper wire, if I can remember, the key was not in the ignition or on when inserting the jumper wire. This of course is no substitute for for the proper Toyota diagnostic tool to reset the lights.

I had a 6 month old tire go on me, damage caused tread fapping. I immediately stopped, got towed, had tire replaced, my Excl sign, ABS and VSC have been on ever since. Toyota said actuator system needs to be replaced, 2700. Is that bs or quite possible? I don't trust them, they never get the lights off or they come back for other past repairs. Last thing I had done was inverter control, before that was inverter. And in between those two repairs, 1 yr old blower assembly stopped blowing again. I need to pass smog, but can't lit up like a tree dash. These aren't even smog issues. Just looking for some advice before I do it bc they aldo said no guarantee they can get lights off. They just want to start replacing things; process of elimination, sounds like guess work. It's an 09', 77K orig miles. I never abuse it. I'd like to have some idea before I return.

Apparently my cell is going haywire too; not allowing edit box to pop up, hence why I just added addition. I'm in my astro Saturn Return; forced to take care of things that I didn't properly see finished, nor persisted in initial round one, like these so called repairs. I was ticked and felt if I went back, I was going to blow my own gasket in frustration. I've already paid chunks and still, did not get what I paid for. @TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn Жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear that the light is still on. It is likely that the hub and brake caliper could keep the light on or that there is another issue. If disconnecting the battery and trying to reset the light doesn't work there may be an ongoing issue related to these systems. I would try an automotive code scanner/reader to see if there are any associated codes related to the lights. If still in question, it may be worth it to take it to a Toyota dealership with certified Toyota technician/s to properly diagnose the braking systems.

Will this work with a 2012? Ever since having a low tire my "slip indicator light" has been on! It's the only light on. EDIT: Our Prius-V is a 2012 and still has original 12v. Trunk battery!
@TryAdaptLearn

I’m not a technician but here’s my opinion on what I would do if this were happening: Several issues are challenging so I try to do as much as I can for each issue one at a time. At 9 years old, I would test the 12v battery and change if needed. Some auto parts stores offer help with testing batteries. The tire is also priority, I would take a note of which tire was low. If it's more than just an inflation issue, I would try to get it to a tire shop to identify the cause and permanently fix the issue. Then the light first is try to get get the codes with a code reader also troubleshoot the sensors and wires to the sensors for that location.

Thanks for professionally done video… 2010 Prius abs, check engine all similar light are on and it happened a few times were while driving at hwy speed all of sudden, yellow triangle of death comes on and display shows “check hybrid system” and there’s no more power,pulled over shut off car for a couple of minutes and it started with same light on cluster but this time car seems ok. Next day all lights goes off. Also brake pedal become softer when lights comes on. I did push brake 8 times within 5 seconds and light goes off but comes back on. Took to dealership, no codes. I was told also by local shop it could be brake actuator assembly and internal water pump. Don’t trust these guys. Please help as I’m running out of idea. Keep up the great video. 5stars
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn 2 жыл бұрын
Considering the two possible explanations, I would guess that the brake actuator assembly is likely the cause a of the braking system issues. The water pump is could be related to cooling system issues which would cause internal engine issues, coolant leaks or overheating. If you are unsure about the local shop you may want to take it back to the dealership and have them check something specific such as the brake actuator assembly. If there are no codes then this also may be an electrical issue such as batter and/or corrosion at the electrical connections (including grounds).

Please make the choices appropriate to your safety. If I was in a similar situation this is what I would do, I would start by disconnecting/re-connecting the battery. I would then erase codes. Next try to test drive in a safe enclosed area to see if the lights turn off and the codes stay off. Hopefully the test drive can check and calibrate the suspension/steering and brakes as the vehicle is on solid ground. If the vehicle functions properly but lights and codes are on, then I would tow or drive it to a Toyota service department to have a Toyota technician work on a wheel alignment (steering angle), check the ecu (possible cause of the codes/lights), and erase the codes and reset the lights. Once that is done, if the lights/codes come on, there is a possibility that there are are problems causing the codes and lights. There would also be the possibility that the sensors themselves are malfunctioning, the sensors detected problems when the vehicle was running on jack stands, the ecu is malfunctioning/ needs to be reset and/or or the connections/wiring to the systems is faulty/broken or not connected properly.

The diagnostic port faces straight down at the floor. Very difficult position to be able to view the two ports and jumper them correctly. (If you jumper the wrong port you can seriously damage the car I think). Any tips?
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. I think that if it is hard to see, I would use a couple different options to help. One would likely be a mirror. If possible, the “selfie” camera and display of a phone would be good. Either way, it would good double check the orientation of the ports. It may also be helpful to have two diagrams of the ports. One would be looking at the port if you could see it directly and the second diagram as you see it with the help of the mirror or camera. Jumper wires are not the proper diagnostic tool and I agree that it is possible to do serious damage to electrical system if this is done incorrectly. There’s always the choice to take it to a Toyota certified technician. Good luck with trying to diagnose the issues which may be causing the lights to come on.

Question. Does the battery absolutely need to be replaced? Or can the jumper wire be used to remove the abs brake lights??
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn Жыл бұрын
No, The battery should not need to be replaced, it was only replaced in this vehicle because it was apart of issues that were specific to this vehicle. The battery can be tested on it's own to help troubleshoot issues. this method can reset the light but like many have mentioned, sometimes they will remain or come back on. The lights are indicators to the sensors and systems and may indicate that there is an ongoing issues that needs to be resolved before that can be reset and turned off.

One way to trouble shoot is to use a code scanner that has ABS capabilities. Some auto parts stores will also use their ABS scanners to help you diagnose free of charge. Although it will take more time some service departments at dealerships will diagnose for free, you just have to to ask specifically how much they charge for diagnostic only. I have listed the items to look out for in the pinned comment. The lights could come on due to any of those items. Unfortunately with these vehicles, the most common cause is the the ABS pump and/or actuator. The part alone is expensive, no matter who does the labor, I would recommend a genuine Toyota part.

Sometime these warning lights appear due to a faulty part in the abs system, sometime the sensors sending a signal to turn the lights on. If they still remain on after trying to reset the lights, you need a diagnostic tool specific to analyze ABS/brake systems and/or you consider taking it to Toyota service department to diagnose what is causing the lights to stay on.

In addition to the red brake warning light I have yellow brake warning light, ABS, VSC and traction lights on. There is no engine light but also whenever applying brakes the red triangle 🔺 and door open lights go on as well and the MFD keeps switching back and forth between navigation and P lock shift warning screen and beeping. Also the speedo and odometer - white they still illuminate - do not work. Speedo shows zero all the time and odometer is stuck at a specific mileage count.
@TryAdaptLearn

It seems like there are issues with not only resetting the lights in your vehicle but also the systems that they are meant to warn you about. If you have a code reader, it may be worth it to read the codes that may be associated with the warning lights. Since the red triangle appears when you apply the brakes, I would recommend taking the vehicle to a certified Toyota certified specialist with the proper tools to diagnose the multiple issues associated with the warning lights in your vehicle.

You can double check the pin numbers that the jumper is in but if there's no diatonic screen showing in the display, you'll likely have to take it to a Toyota technician with the proper tools to troubleshoot the issue.

The procedure in this video would reset the lights if the systems are functioning properly. Since you have multiple issues including braking system lights, odometer and map, I would recommend taking it to a certified Toyota service location to help you troubleshoot the issues associated with your car. As a humble opinion, a malfunction in the braking system alone is enough to create a safety issue and it sounds as if you are dealing with multiple issues that require someone to inspect your car in person.

For what is that KEY switch next to the tyre pressure set button?
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn 10 ай бұрын
Good question. The switch labeled "Key" at the bottom of the steering column is used to enable or disable the smart entry and start system. When the switch is in, it is disabled, when the swtich is out, it is enabled. The "Key" switch is unrelated to the issue in this video which is why is was not identified in the video.

Are you sure it's the 5th pin hole on the top ( the top being the fatter side of the obd) and not the 4th? I read on prius chat that it's the 4th pin and 13th pin, which are both 4th from their respective sides.
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn 10 ай бұрын
It could have worked for others in a different configurations. In this video, on this vehicle, the wire was inserted in the 5th pin from the right on the top as mentioned in the video. That being written, the process in this video should not be considered a substitute for a certified Toyota technician with the proper Toyota diagnostic tool.

@TryAdaptLearn My bad. You actually did say 5th from the right on top, which is 4th from the left (#4). This didn't fix my problem because I found the seat rail mangled through the loom and through about 4 of the 9 or 10 wires that go to the wiring harnesses under my driver seat!

Sounds like two separate issues occurring at the same time. Starting issues could be low voltage in the battery, fuel system issues or ignition system issues. The brake lights are a separate system and usually cause by light bulbs or the switch that turns on the light bulbs when your foot is on the brake pedal.

If this process did not reset your lights, it is possible that you vehicle sensor/s may be bad. If they are functional, they may be indicating that you have a problem that need a to be fixed before the lights can be reset. While troubleshooting the issue it may be worth considering to take the vehicle in to have a Toyota technician with the proper tools to look diagnose the issue further.

Why is my car abs and vsc blinking whenever i start my car and my gear will change to drive4 instead of D
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn Жыл бұрын
I am sorry but I do not know what exactly is happening with your car. Usually, if the ABS and VSC blink when you start the car, it is a system start up and/or a system check. As far as your gear changing to drive4 instead of D, that sounds like a transmission issue and is a separate problem and issue than the abs and vsc lights. Here are more of my opinions related to the abs and vsc lights: ABS is Anti-lock braking system, VSC is vehicle stability control, both are related to the braking system. If the abs and vsc remain on when the car (and engine) is started, it indicates that the sensors are warning you about maintenance needed or malfunctions in those systems. This video was a demonstration of how the lights were reset with the vehicle in this video when there was no maintenance needed or a malfunction in those systems.

I do not understand why many peoples just click to reset any error coming up ? So if your ABS motor broken then we just clear error for what. ? so will it coming again ??? Or some sensor bad or broken so can we just clear the error or need to change the motor first and than clear the error ???? Please answer my question because there are different ideas of each person ,,,

Resetting warning lights will not fix the electrical or mechanical issues that they are meant to bring to the driver’s attention. There are however situations in which someone would want to reset the lights. These include: Troubleshooting electrical issues that may be causing the lights to stay on. If the lights remain on after a new part is installed. In the case of this video, the 12v battery was a part of the issue. In other cars, a low voltage battery will likely not create this issue but this car has the 12v and a hybrid electrical system. The more complex a (electrical) system is the more likely it may need resetting, troubleshooting, and/or maintenance.

I put air on my tires and after I turned on my 07 Prius I got the red triangle and ( ! ) I'm worried 😓 the screen display Problem and the red car.
@TryAdaptLearn
@TryAdaptLearn 2 жыл бұрын
If you recently added air to your tires and a light (a tire and exclamation in the middle) is on, you may want to: double check the air pressure with the manufacturer values (in the manual and/or sticker on the door), then reset the tpms system using the tpms reset button. The other lights are indicating other issues. A car with a key could be the alarm system. A car with an exclamation in the middle could be the hybrid system warning. An option to consider is that if you are unable to troubleshoot what the lights are indicating or how to resolve the issues (before trying to reset the lights), you may want to call a Toyota service department and ask them for an estimate for their help to identify the issues that are causing the lights to appear.

I recommend you have a professional technician look into the issues with your car. I don’t know where 4 and 9 is on your one port but if the car will not start, I would disconnect the wire and I would not try it again. If it was my car, I would disconnect the negative cable from the 12v battery, then I would check all fuses. Before I reconnect the cable, I would check the voltage on the 12v battery. If that doesn’t work I would call a professional to diagnose the issue.
