Mental health is the same as physical health - it is a bodily experience. That being said, we experience mental illness differently than a physical illness, because it comes to our mental health, it challenges our identity. It’s healthy to have emotions and feel them, because they’re part of our bodily experience. But how do we respond to them? How do we navigate them? How do we care for our minds well?
Today, Candace is joined by Dr. Anita Phillips to talk about mental health, and while this is a topic that many are afraid to talk about … it is a needed + valuable conversation.
Did you know that mental health and faith go hand in hand? Jesus expressed his emotions in many ways throughout His life on earth. He never avoided them and never repented for them. Why? Listen in as Dr. Anita breaks it all down and clears the table on everything we think (and culture tells us) about mental health.
In this episode, you will hear Candace + Dr. Anita discuss:
Why people are afraid to talk about mental heath
The best place to start when seeking professional help for mental health
Moments Jesus expressed his emotions (and when he needed a mental-break)

Thank you, Candace! I’m a school counselor and I took the day off because I needed a mental break. I woke up and thought, “I don’t feel well. My mind is full. I need to take care of myself today so that I can take care of others tomorrow.” I’m not weak, I’m strong for allowing myself to rest. ❤

I do believe that it is VERY important to get Christian based counseling, God/scripture needs to be fully welcomed into our healing.

I couldn't find a Christian based counselor that accepted my insurance. I found another therapist and expressed my faith to her. She was more than happy to talk to me with that in mind.

It's hard to find Christian therapists who accept all insurances. My therapist is not Christian but has a profound understanding of my faith, encourages it, never shies away when I talk about it and has even learned scripture to apply to my healing journey. The Christian therapy I've received before actually was damaging in that it introduced a lot of spiritual bypass that left me without real tools to cope and overcome with. Having a secular counselor doesn't mean your therapy leaves out the Holy Spirit. and having a Christian counselor doesn't guarantee biblical or effective therapy. God used many ungodly people in the Word to do His mighty works and He can work just as mightily through secular therapists.

THIS. 💯 Every time I have tried a non-Christian counselor, they have not understood my issues at all because spirituality, mental health, and emotional health are intertwined. I've got bad advice and disdain for my faith. One kept insisting I do what amounted to blasphemous practices to help my PTSD. She would not take no for an answer and pressed me on it 3 times, so I finally got the courage to leave and dropped her like a bad habit. Non-Christian therapy is like eating an amazing, delicious looking meal... that has a little bit of poison in it. It may seem to nourish you for a time, but there's a darkness there that can lead to more sickness a nd problems in the end.

Pentecostal charasmatic here! I grew up with a Borderline Personality Disorder Mom. Life was very hard growing up, I was sexually abused and endured a lot of trauma aside from the typical trauma that comes from growing up with a BPD parent. God has healed so much for me! I have done EMRD also. We are beautifully and wonderfully made and when we embrace that, it can change everything! Thank you both for this AMAZING Episode! God bless you both!❤

First time listening to your show, Candace. I just wanted to say that when the Lord prompted me by asking “Do you believe what you say you believe?” I began pursing Him with fresh eyes. Truly life-changing to know God for ourselves rather than just “believing what we were taught”. Thank you for making a point to speak into that.

I've been listening to this in between errands & this was the most helpful broadcast to me. I've been afraid to get therapy becuz I didn't want it to mess with my faith. Becuz my faith is the ONLY thing holding me upright right now! But I know that I have years of negative self talk going through my brain all day long, it keeps me from sleeping at night. I'm always on edge so thank you so much for sharing this beautiful woman with us. I really love your podcasts & I'm grateful that you started doing them for all of us 💓. Have the very best day 😊

I believe therapy and the word of God go hand in hand. Take what you learn from the therapist and pray. I've learned that I was not able to communicate my emotions. I was able to express myself emotionally, whether it be yealling or slamming things, but was unable to sit and have a healthy conversation of what I needed because I couldn't express it in words. Going to therapy, the therapist would give me a wheel with all the emotions that someone would feel and have me point to the one that I was feeling. I tell you, it was freeing. Now, I'm in place in my life where I really feel that I could conquer. Thank you, Jesus.

Thank you, Candace, for your intuitive question about "this is how i feel but now i need to go to the Word". Becuse this does go against our culture Christian beliefs to "not give in to our emotions" "BUT" to let the Spirit help manage us - it gave the answer I needed that we can use "and". Things are a mess right now and I have been screaming at God that I hate that He gave us emotions! But hearing this podcast and your question hped put Dr. Anita's perpsective on it in a clearer light.

Scientifically speaking there are mental conditions that require medication bc of a chemical imbalance that faith and self discipline is not enough to control hallucinations, delirium, schizophrenia, bipolar etc many with out scientific knowledge could confuse this with demon possession , cursed and so on. Its good to talk about all this to know when you, us or someone we know should get help in the right area and not just wishing, praying it away its good to seek the right type of help.

My daughter was recently diagnosed with FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) basically she can experience anxiety so bad to the point that her brain will send signals to her body that there are things she cannot physically do. Hers is walk. We basically learned that when she gets overwhelmed or super stressed, her body doesn't display normal symptoms. It's so weird. We have her seeing a counselor who specializes in CBT. It's been an interesting journey. Albeit, it's very early, but it's been interesting.

Listen this is the most aligned perspective helping us understand how our faith and neurological system flow together. So many are suffering in the body of Christ because of the lack of understanding. She loves God and using the garden within to help us make the connection. This is so needed. So if you are reading my comment and on the fence. Open your mind to learning and new perspective and get her book. Read it for your self.

This was an awesome panel of guests today. I had an expectation of marrying a woman out of ministry school that we would do life together and do kingdom business with a kingdom mindset. Yet I have met a woman who has devalued me, been disloyal, dishonest, disrespectful, degrading, denigrating, lying blame-shifting, deflecting, projecting, cheating, accusing, cussing, drinking beer and liquor, controlling manipulative, threatening, smearing my name to my family, not hers all under this Bible. I ask that you pray for me. I didn’t sign up for a performer, an actor, a stage player, a hypocrite basically. I have wasted another 5 years of my life on dating or marrying a woman in church. There are definitely mental health issues low self-esteem, insecurities, and possible childhood trauma. She refuses to go get help. and I refuse to stay where I am not tolerated or appreciated.

How does this align with casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God? Jesus did not want to be separated from God! That is why he went through that deep emotional state. But once he prayed he came back into alignment with God's will. At the end of the day, we are not to be ruled by emotions. He gave us emotions but not that they should overrule us. I agree we all need someone to talk to. I don't condemn talking to people. But we must not negate and belittle the power of God's word.

Don’t be fooled. Yes, Jesus experienced pain, emotions. But that is the VERY reason He died, besides for our sins. Our trials, emotions, etc. should turn us to Him, that HE may live His life IN and through us. Our suffering makes us like Him. We depend on Him, not us. “His grace IS sufficient.” “It’s no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” “ ALL things, good and bad, work together for the good.” If I’m trying, it’s me. If I’m trusting, it’s Him. We turn to Him, surrender our pain and trust the process. He delivered me of anxiety, depression and bipolar. Over 3 years, no medication! That was bondage. Don’t get me wrong, it was very hard work, but surrender, honesty, trusting Him changed everything! He transformed my heart, then that shaped my thoughts and behaviors. Unlearning old subconscious beliefs. God is good, faithful.

I have heard all of Dr. Aniti's talks. Two years worth. I am a mental health counselor. The main thing is, she has been on every Christian network and even talked with Oprah. She has been to many mainstream churches. She talks about how we come from seeds. How Jesus, when he was talking about the Gospel falling on stony ground, was talking about our emotions. There is no such thing as soil feelings, as stated in her book. You all need to wake up and read your word. Do your homework on Dr. Anita. I think she is a true believer in Christ, but she is not teaching the truth of the Gospel. Our hearts do not represent the Garden of Eden. That is not in scripture anywhere. She is becoming more and more popular. As a therapist, I am glad she is talking about getting your mental health in order. I don't agree with her philosophies regarding feelings. Our thoughts, control our feelings, and they control our behaviors. But what does scriptures say about it all? We have to be men and women of the word of God. She is mostly talking to women. We must be women of the word.

no my favorite interview with dr. phillips. i LOVE hearing her share her wisdom and have watched tons of her talks and interviews. this is the first time where it really felt like the interviewer was trying to drive & taper dr. phillips' words to fit what she (candace) already believed and was comfortable with. it makes for a less-than-authentic conversation. dr. phillips brings so much richness and nuance to these topics and deserves the freedom to shift old mindsets rather than manipulating the conversation to remain in our comfort zone.
