Resident Evil 0: Novel Analysis || Zero Hour
This Resident Evil Analysis of the Resident Evil 0 (2002) Novel holds some valuable pieces of added lore for us to analyze, especially to Marcus and his leech children. This novel is the last of 7 Resident Evil novels by S.D. Perry, but chronologically, it is the first. There are a few untold stories here, just as the RE1 book provided for Chris and Jill. Let us explore Marcus's allusions to Christ, Billy and Rebecca's exclusive scenes, and the early characterization of Wesker and Birkin. You should be scared.

What I like about RE0 is that Rebecca slowly begins to realize that Billy isn’t the monster he’s portrayed as. Also, though it sucks that Dr. Marcus was betrayed and assassinated by Umbrella, he was _far_ from innocent in their schemes, as he was willingly complicit in the engineering of the Progenitor Virus.

One thing I liked in the novel was the origin of the virus' name: Marcus was feeling increasingly oppressed by Spencer, his impossible demands, and his greed. He called the virus "T, for Tyrant" - his own private joke. I went through the game's files and found out that detail was exclusive to the novel, so S.D. Perry actually gave us a better explanation for it than the games did (I don't think the games ever mention why it's called "Tyrant"). Just thought that was interesting.

Mmhmm!! She does that for a lot of the lesser known origins of names and skillsets in the series. Like tying Jill's lockpicking skills to her background as an ex-thief. She's definitely good at pinning little details to a character's emotions/ personality.

I love the characterization for Billy, showing the reader that what society accepts as truth as opposed to what really happened is up for serious debate. This is a key part of Rebecca's changing perception of him during their time together (in the game and here). The "competent rookie" versus "confused/fearful rookie way out of their depth" is a balance that every RE protagonist needs to strike during their first game, even if you are a seasoned mercenary like Jake Müller or a court-martialed marine on trumped up charges like Billy Coen. Insight into Marcus' mind state when his research assistants betrayed him and stole his research, and his recovery/merging with the Queen Leech into a rejuvenated form, was a definite must for writing a book version of RE 0. Having HIS Wesker and Birkin involved with the very men he avoided like the plague to make powerful discoveries in virology and making BOWs, without having his research stolen and sold to the highest bidder... I would be vengeful and angry too. This exact thing is what Wesker eventually did in order to become a prosperous independent party (Umbrella Chronicles and RE4), working with Tricell to fund his own research into the Progenitor virus and Uroboros' development (RE5).

Excellent Analysis! I feel like Rebecca in 0 and 1 aren't as inconsistent as some would believe. She comes off pretty capable in 1 remake.. (aside from her reaction to the Hunter, and randomly crying after treating your wounds in RE1) lol. The personality behind her dialog with higher ranked officers in 0 and 1 is similar. Speaking just on the games.

Huh, I feel a strong urge to make a fusion between the novels and game versions as a new REmake of those games. If only I had the skills, supplies, knowledge, and connections to make it happen. These novels is full of potential that the games desperately needed to make the characters all the more interesting to learn more about.

I just love how the Resident Evil stories come full circle 20 years later with Wesker's and Birkin's children Jake Muller and Sherry Birkin. They defeat the sins of their fathers. But I either forgot or didn't notice at all that this already happened 20 earlier with Wesker and William where they fail to their corruption from Oswell E. Spencer and James Marcus.

Perry's resi books (others are great) so I can't give my personal opinion on it, but I must say I really liked your analysis of the character of James Marcus. So much is unknown about the umbrella founders & how & why they turned on each other (other than Spencer's eugenics program for his own ends). He seemed the less nefarious one of the original three, being as he had emotional attachment to his test subjects (but who knows what would've happened had he lived). Another nice video! I'm afraid RE0 is one of the few RE games I've never played, so I only have a tenuous grasp of the story and would've definitely got more out of this analysis if I'd experienced it (I'll be sure to come back to it if and when I do), but I still appreciated the video very much. It seems like you put a lot of research and passion behind it, and it shows in the final result. So congratulations, and keep up the good work! =) The only doubt I was left after watching this is a very small one, but then again I've always got overly hung-up on details. You mention in this video that the Bravo team helicopter went down because it was sabotaged by Wesker, and indeed that's what I've always been led to believe by every RE1-related piece of media I've ever consumed. In the last few days, though, spurred by your RE1 novel analysis from a couple of months ago, I've started reading the RE1 novel myself, and am about 70% of the way through. In his point-of-view section, Wesker mentions more than once that the Bravo team helicopter accident was not something he'd planned himself, and he in fact expresses surprise (since he'd had it checked just a couple of days earlier) and frustration (as his original plan was apparently to get both Bravo and Alpha teams safely inside the mansion to dispose of the various creatures). Is this part of the many details S. D. Perry refers to in the introduction to the RE0 novel, when she says that authoring a version that successfully reconciles all details would be impossible? Or is it something that she made up for the RE1 novel and then maybe forgot about when it came to writing this one? I apologise for the overly long comment, I can't help myself. I also apologise in case this should be something that's addressed in the latter third of the RE1 novel I haven't read yet, or whether it's something you mentioned in either of your videos and I just forgot or failed to notice. I also just apologise in general for caring about useless minutiae. XD
@BeggyBeggBegg
@BeggyBeggBegg 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! And the Wesker helicopter thing wasn't quite something she incorporated into her novels, so she just made it work without it (and had Wesker furious over the sudden malfunction). But in all instances his plan is still to have both Alpha and Bravo Teams clear the puzzles in the mansion, as he knows the labs well, but not the mansion.

This was incredibly interesting! Great work on this video. I have sadly not read the Perry novels, as when I made my own Marcus video, I was uncertain on how to apply the canonicity onto the character story and psychological analysis on James Marcus. I still stand by the decision to not include the novel, as it would have complicated things, but I was still curious to read the book. And now, I am very happy to hear what I missed regarding the plot of the RE0 Novel. While I'm sure the RE0 Novel may have canonical issues, it is only logical considering the game itself has HUGE glaring plot holes, some of which you brought up in this video. Though to give credit where it's due, the novel helps compliment the subpar narrative of Resident Evil, and definitely helps emphasise the ego and narcissism of James Marcus, not to mention the splitting image between Marcus & Spencer, and Birkin & Wesker. Actually, from what I can tell from your video and quotes you tweeted - my psychological analysis of Marcus definitely stands true. This was a treat to listen to. I look forward to future content in regards to Resident Evil. Though, considering the year that is coming soon - I imagine both of us will have plenty to study and dissect as Resident Evil fans. But first and foremost I'd need to brush upon the villains and details of Rev1, it's been a while. Given how much is being worked on with Kafka stuff, Onimusha, and sd Perry novels, I'd say it'd come much later in the year (and possibly to ROE, we'll see).

Zero Hour was the last of Perry's novels. I imagine she didn't bother adding much since it didn't fit with her canon, thanks to contradictions with Umbrella's and the T-Virus' Perryverse origins, and how Umbrella Conspiracy presents the timespan between Bravo Team going missing and Alpha Team reaching the mansion as much shorter than RE0 needs in order to take place.

That seems right. When I asked her if she had any additional supplemental material to go off of, she said she didn't, unlike for The Umbrella Conspiracy. That book pulled some secondary characters from the Biohazard: The Beginning book like Billy Rabbitson and the McGee girls.

@@BeggyBeggBegg George Trevor too. It was really cool how she brought in this side stuff to enrich her version of the setting. It's a shame her series stopped after Zero Hour. I bet she could have done some good stuff with RE4 or Umbrella's End.

That's true, she said she'd be willing to write an RE4 novelization should Capcom sign her back on 👁 George Trevor has all sorts of fascinating lore in his scrapped and bonus files (they reveal the significance of many items like the Broken Shotgun and the red/blue books), which are also part of the RE1 bonus book "The True Story Behind Biohazard". I analyzed all 3 versions of his story on Residence of Evil along with Biohazard: The Beginning. Altogether, RE1 has some very neat world-building.

@@BeggyBeggBegg Makes me realise that REmake missed more opportunities than just making Rebecca's character more consistent or referencing Claire thorugh Chris' protection of Rebecca.

It's definitely difficult to include all supplemental lore details in one entry, especially since REmake omits the "STARS briefing scene" that occurs in Biohazard: The Beginning and The Umbrella Conspiracy. Including a similar scene in REmake would allow these details to be included more organically.

Very interesting analysis! However the Jesus analogy isn't too surprising to me, since Christian elements seem to be a popular theme in Japanese horror. Just look at Siren or Silent Hill. Regarding the novels: since I'm not an English native speaker, I can't commend on the language of the English versions, but unfortunately the German translations are rather sloppy in tone, clearly targeting at a teen audience. That's why I never took them very seriously. Your analysis however gave me more appreciation for them. I'm looking forward to read the Zero novel (This time in English) myself in the near future and I'm very curious what your analysis of Caliban Cove will be.

Thx!! And yes my God, so many Japanese franchises spawn their own versions of angels, Jesus and such. I think of Sephiroth from FF in a similar light too. Devil may cry plays with "nephilim" also, and there is a "fallen angel" enemy. The novel is great, i love how it made me think of the movie Occult. For me, the novel ia a more entertaining journey than the actual game, RE0.

@@BeggyBeggBegg I've read Zero Hour twice now and can totally see your point that Perry did her best to make Zero's story work as a novel. I think one can't expect from her to fix everything. Resident Evil Story's always feel like they were designed on the drawing board, but in the case of Zero the different components never came together. However after my second reading of the book I wonder what she would have done with Zero's story, if she was commissioned to rewrite it into some kind of spin off / variation.

Interesting interpretation from a writing perspective, I could not agree more that Kenneth Sullivan and Kevin Dooley should have been fleshed out in my opinion. Prequels do that too often, keep in mind I'm going off the games and not live action plays. It's like the idea of Man Verses Machine, Man Verses Self, and Man Verses Nature; They get the usual Empowered Hero or Heroine fighting the Antagonist and with everyone else seems to just get in the way. I usually consider the story that unfolded in my technique of choices as I played through Resident Evil, I played through and never had to rescue Rebecca and still I got the best ending. She seemed to be just exhausted with the experience of saving Chris and learning about Brad Vickers leaving them helpless. I mean she wasn't a timid rookie in my eyes and just overcome with relief that Enrico Marini and her weren't abandoned.

Loving it. I tweeted about her looking for similar to the hachishakusama of Japanese folklore because of her white hat and dress, and now being taller. The hachishakusama is an 8 foot tall woman who abducts children. I still think she is the "Dracula" of the game and her brides are the brides of dracula (one blonde and two brunettes). I also noticed the little wagon that opens up in the teaser is just like the caravans used to transport Dracula in the novel.

This isn’t Perry’s fault, but I think an easy fix for a lot of the plot holes and shift of character traits would be swapping Rebecca out for a different Bravo team member like Forrest, Enrico, or Edward. I wonder why they stuck with Rebecca. They could have told almost the same exact story as long as the timeline shifted a bit. I’d rather have one of the characters end up dead than to have this weird timeline.

Resident Evil 0 is one of the worst stories in the entire franchise. It could have been fine, but they chose to a) retcon Rebecca's character to the point where her appearance in RE1 doesn't even make sense anymore, and b) inclue an anime leech wizard that broke the tone of the entire series.
