Loved the relationship between Barry and Enrico in the novel. Close colleagues, probably took their families to barbecues, drank beer and joked around with one another. I actually felt bad when Enrico died, unlike the games where he kind of comes across as a blundering oaf with hardly any connection to the main cast.

As a mid 30's old school resi fan (aye, got hold of me as a wee lad in the 90's and stuck like mud) Can't believe it took me so long to find your channel. Anyhow, I tip my hat to you. The nostalgia is timeless, like the games and it is great to see passionate fans creating content like this 👏

Wow this book was what got me into reading at age 8. All my friends thought i was nuts for reading a book about a video game I owned. I'm glad to see there's people that still appreciate the written word and you got a subscriber here.

The Wesker project files, documenting the 13 children taken from their families and their progress through their formative years (up to their decease, Albert and Alex exempt) make it clear that there is no blood relation between any of them, even if some of them share similar appearances. Because of the superiority beliefs instilled in them by Spenser, and Alex recognizing the inadequacies and manipulation tactics of their father figure (and a certain flair for classic literature parallels, in Kafka and in classical mythology, both of which you've covered), it is only natural that the Wesker children should be co-conspirators in plans to take the world for themselves by instigating a new Genesis. The lovers angle? I would need to see proof from Albert's side; Alex's dogged determination to annihilate Barry, Moira and Claire, in addition to how highly she speaks of Albert in her notes on Uroboros experiments and various memos saying she will free them from Spenser's control... these could be construed as (romantically) obsessive behavior. But, it could also just be 'acknowledging a fellow Wesker as an equal' and not lead anywhere.

not sure which novel she started doing this in, but i remember really loving how she would address zombies as "virus carriers" or sometimes just "carriers", felt very organic in a way

Fun fact 35:40 is actually *in* the original game in Jill’s scenario if Barry knocks out Wesker. You can run to the power room and find Wesker in a pool of blood with a Chimera in the room. Most people don’t have any reason to run to that room after the first Tyrant fight so a lot of people miss it. Great analysis video, by the way 👍🏻 Oh never mind you covered it. Stil have all these books on the shelf, city of the dead and nemesis were well-loved, practically falling apart. Wish they were still canon and that we could’ve found out more about Trent. Even Wesker feared him.

I like to consider the novel an original source to draw from for the remake, so when I play remake I play like the events of the novel as if it were a film adaptation with the added Lisa scenes. I make sure Jill gets the shotgun early, Chris fights yawn and uses the v jolt on plant 42, also I make sure Jill goes to the caves after Barry is heard offscreen talking with Wesker, as if she was tailing him, and Chris goes to the residence. Jill is the one who needs to be saved from the cell, and her ending is used at the end of my joint playthrough. Rebecca is implied to be in the chopper offscreen :3

This is the gods honest truth, but I listen to bigfoxes audiobook version of this book on KZfaq every night before I go to bed. It's like a ritual of mine now that I've been doing for years. It is so well written and bigfox narrates it so well that I actually use it as a type of stress relief. I know the book off by heart now. And I love listening to the first zombie encounter over and over. It is fantastically written book in every regard

Great analysis! I really enjoyed reading this book. I agree the opening scene at the STARS office was great. Jill's added motivation makes her more interesting. I thought Trent was kind of cheesy. While I really enjoyed Welcome To Raccoon City for it's character/story remixing, I'd still like to see a more faithful mini-series based off of The Umbrella Conspiracy come to Netflix. The Spencer Mansion is one of my favorite fictional locations.

Such an amazing analysis & this video pretty much made me wanna read the novel LOL For real though, with this amount of added stuffs, the novel could easily adapted into a mini series show or anime. It would add so much that I am sure the majority of RE fans simply missing out. thank you so much for making this video! i'm currently working on my own adaptation of the raccoon city trilogy since apparently we can't get an objectively good film adaptation of the games. i'm formatting it as a limited series and i want to make sure i get all the lore details correct. i'm planning the first season to be 8 1 hour episodes covering the mansion incident and Ben's investigative journalism on umbrella which will lead into s2 which will be 12-14 1 hour episodes that covers the events of RE2 and RE3 in chronological order. even if it never gets past the screenplay stage i'll still be posting it in discord's and RE fan forums. that's what i'm doing it for, the fans who care about the source material, and making something that they will appreciate, as well as just letting them know that there's someone out there that understands RE and how to it could be adapted.

But now that I re-listened to it and understood everything, I am in a PURE amazement! First, your voice is so calming and good and you are able to make everything so clear and understandable despite of too many details. I love Jill's backstory, it was never that deep in the games and so is her personality, the novel made hers so touching and beautiful.. You can relate to her so easily. Chris knowing about Umbrella before even going into the mansion was very interesting, it's different from the game but also very cool. That encounter between Wesker and Barry was amazing, the novel really made Wesker be super evil and obnoxious.

I had bought the 2nd one in french when I was very young and got all six of them in English 3 years ago in the US. I'm so happy someone is doing analysis on them. I never got to finish reading them like I did for the Metal Gear solid novel. I really should do it. S.D Perry is a pretty solid author. Edit: I never got Zero hour. Imma have to buy it.

Wow great video! This is my first viewing and it’s always so enriched in such meta levels and complex narrative prose. Like I have to develop a professional mindset and get into a discussion 😂 Resident Evil didn’t start out as a mini-project to Home Sweet Home but rather a full on survival horror that challenged the audience and the characters to face obstacles while telling a goofy-serious plot about a pharmaceutical company making virus infections. You mention that these books are non-canon right? That’s a good to to get off my mind because I can enjoy them as their own spin-offs while staying true to the RE lore/nature. I really enjoyed hearing your voice go over such great detail and how the story is structured. I was easily able to comprehend what’s going on!

I remember getting this as a Birthday Gift recently, along with a Resident Evil manga that is basically the PREQUEL of Resident Evil 6 known as The Marhawa Desire. You should check that out too, but for now the Book Umbrella Conspiracy. I LOVE it so far and am on chapter nine! It has so much character interaction and background the game didn't show that I WISH was included into the Remastered RE 1. Though I am glad Wesker was allowed to have a reason to have survived to become the villain he is in ALL of RE history, now when I think of who is a truly iconic villain, I often think of the following people. 1: Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7 and Kingdom Hearts) 2: Wesker (Resident Evil) 3: Xehanort (Kingdom Hearts) 4: Salem (RWBY) 5: Darth Vader (Star Wars) Note this isn't a list of who is the most dangerous to me, but who is the most iconic to me for being the ultimate bad guy in their respective worlds/stories of life. Edit: My Birthday was October 22nd and I got that awesome book and the great manga as early Birthday presents literally A FEW DAYS BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY~

As someone who’s a Tie-in novel junkie. I definitely think it kinda wasted opportunity that Capcom never invested into more Expanded Universe novels beyond the RE movie Novelizations.

The world would have such a greater foundation in Gaming Horror movies if Capcom let S.D. Perry have the reigns

Very interesting perspective, I knew about the RE novelisations but never got around to buying them (let alone reading them) because I was put off by the fact that the author was American rather than Japanese (long story XD). It seems I might have to re-evaluate this judgment. Funnily enough, I discovered the channel when I told a friend 'Why don't you make a video review of the RE novels? It would be interesting, and there's nothing like that on KZfaq', then to prove my point I did a search and... well, you can imagine the rest. LOL On the semi-unrelated subject of RE1 game dialogue and translation: in the video, when talking about the conversation between Barry and Wesker, you mention that maybe the translation substantially changed the meaning or tone of what was supposed to have been said. That is indeed the case in many places during the game, the translation is really horrible (I believe it was done in-house by a Japanese developer with at most a high-school level knowledge of English, it's much worse than even Google Translate would do), and the voice acting only compounds that. The best example I can think of is the extremely weird cutscene between Wesker and Jill/Chris before the Tyrant, with sentences such as 'and Wesker, you were formerly with Umbrella' which literally made no sense at all until I chanced to watch a Japanese playthrough and read the subtitles. It's still not Oscar-level dialogue, but at the very least the Japanese makes sense and clearly explains the story (the 'formerly with Umbrella' thing is meant to say that Wesker has always been with Umbrella since before joining STARS, rather than being in STARS first and then being bought out by Umbrella). Anyway, I got sidetracked. I looked up the Japanese version of the Barry/Wesker dialogue Jill overhears and... unfortunately, there are subtitles only for the sentences spoken by Barry. The Wesker lines have no subtitles at all, so I have no way of verifying whether the English translation did something weird (though I'm willing to bet it did). I guess that the player isn't meant to actually understand what Wesker is saying, to keep suspense for the twist at the end of the game, so they didn't give him subtitles. The Barry lines are still mostly horribly translated and acted, but they don't differ much from the Japanese in their content. Well... this was a long comment. My deepest apologies to anyone who might have made it this far, I just felt like sharing the results of my brief 'research'. =P

I KNEW I was gonna love this! Thank you so much for finally giving this holy grail a spotlight. The opening chapters still play in my head over and over again, I just love how 'human' the characters all feel. I'm confident you're going to love the other books too, especially excited for you to experience City of the Dead, Leon and Claire are amazing! Maybe one day we'll see other media retellings of Perry's original stories in some form. The novel exclusive characters, David and John are some of my favourites and I'm so sad we got Alice instead of characters like them!

I completely disagree on claim that RE4 being good horror from either gameplay or story perspective Gameplay perspective: it really feels like Action movie presentation where Leon was basically Rambo taking Down bad guys and armed to teeth while they were horror elements in game from introduction and regenerators but for most part it primarily action game. plot perspective RE4 it basically go save the president's daughter from bad guys while the main bad guy talks to through Radio sending his minons to deal with you basically cheesy action movie plot i don't discredit RE4 being great fun arcadey action game but objectively speaking RE4 is not good horror game. But i do agree on old RE games haven't aged well when it comes to horror presentation they were products/scary of their time.
