The Thematic Brilliance of Revelations 2 || Literary Analysis (Ch.1)
Resident Evil Revelations 2 pulls a lot of inspiration from the chronicler of darkness, Franz Kafka. Several of his puzzling works were incorporated into Revelations 2, with each chapter being titled either after one of his novellas or story collections (Contemplation is a collection rather than a single tale). Each of these works carry varying levels of thematic value in the storytelling of Revelations 2.
Tonight, we will be examining the guiding inspiration for Chapter 1 of Revelations 2, Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" (and "The Trial"), and crystallize the underlying themes that elevate Revelations 2's narrative. The parallels between the game and the literature are fascinating to a degree you wouldn't believe!!

Fascinating video. Having not heard of that particular Kafka story I didn't realise the significance of that machine within the game - although I recognised other references. - I wonder if we will ever get a conclusion to the Alex Wesker storyline given how the game ended.

"In the Penal Colony" is one of my favorite Kafka stories of all time, along with "The Judgment" which we'll analyze for Chapter 3. I really want a Revelations 3 or even mainline entry to continue Alex's scheming through Natalia!!

Okay, now I feel like this game is definitely a very interesting twist compared to the old RE as what you said is correct. Out of them all, THIS one is the one time a villain truly got what they wanted regardless the heroes efforts. She was truly mad, but incredibly thorough in her planning.

:) These are quite difficult to finish on the editing side, especially these larger pieces (which i personally like taking on rather than something smaller and/or simpler). Amazing video as always! I've read a bunch of Kafka books after playing Revelations 2 back when it launched, but Penal Colony somehow escaped me. I'll definitely give it a go now!! P.S. When Resident Evil Village was announced, I was 1000% absolutely no doubt in my mind sure that it was going to be inspired by Kafka's The Castle (and that Alex was coming back as the villain). Everything seemed to fit perfectly but alas, it was not to be. At least the game had an ending, unlike the book (imagine my confusion when I discovered that after page 400-ish), but I hope whenever she returns, so do all the references (and your videos to point them out!)

:) Thanks so much, I hope you learned a lot from this!! "In the Penal Colony", along with "The Judgment" of Rev2's chapter 3, is one of my favorite Kafka stories. And yes lol he never finished his longer works. The relevant portions of The Trial, for example, are still being debated to this day. I'm hoping for a Rev3 to continue her storyline, but we'll see.

That's what I was going for!! My friend, Tina, lives in the Baltic States and has several abandoned Soviet institutions near her. This photo is the actual door of a prison cell in Estonia. Sein Island resembles Estonia quite closely too. The island images in this video are real images of Estonia.

I never got to play RE Revlations 2....but from what I have seen, Im seeing some Parrells between Revelations 2 and Code Veronica. Which is likely intentional. Alex is just 2 initials short from Alexia (as stated before, Alex and Albert being brother in sister apart of the Wesker Project, while Alexia and Alfred are clones of an earlier ancestor. Alex is suffering from a desease in her body (from what Ive seen anyway) while Afred seems to suffer from Disociative Personality Disorder (or multi personality disorder)....the settings are islands with a military prison.....i should play both games tho. I havent played Code Veronica since 2000s (damn I want a remake) and as stated I havent played RE REvolations, before I say anything more on the parrelals

I can't help wondering if the 'good' ending isn't a second chance for Alex to have something resembling a normal life and get the proper socialization she lacked while she was in Spencer's clutches (ironic that she'd achieve this in the care of the family whom her little brother terrorized and manipulated).

:) doesn't seem that way, if anything she's even more obsessed about unleashing evil upon the world after her mind transferral at the end of the game. It's like she said, "6 months from now, you're going to awaken as me... and the world is going to be very afraid."

@@BeggyBeggBegg I did. It was very well researched, and skillfully produced and edited. I've watched a lot of RE videos and this was new, different, and fresh which is difficult to pull off with the glut of RE content on KZfaq. You might want to do a video about the "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" PC game.

If you liked this, you'd probably really like my content on Residence of Evil (which is laid out on my home page) as well. Most of it involves esoteric literature and RE's connections to history, film, and the occult. I also love forming those connections with Onimusha and Devil May Cry. I've never heard of that game!! I'll see what it's about.

Well talk about dark i mean revelations 2 as a whole being a allegorical retelling of kafkas work and thematic ideaologies in its tales. Also whats funny is that both alex and vergil story/ character arc wise and thematically embody the works used to inspire them. Vergil embodies william blakes poems in his journey to regain his humanity while alex wesker embodies kafka in her joruney into becoming a monster a far greater evil than her brother could ever be. I mean personally kafkas works so far through these analysis present a somber and dark atmosfere in their world hell im pretty sure sigmund freud would have a field day with kafka or the wesker twins. Also the penal colony and alexs arc in reveleations is sumarize almost into a facist almost totalitarian idealogy i dare say a zealous following or worship similar to communism under stalin or more acurately hittler nazism and third reich; the machine itself seems like the lovechild of saw torture traps and nazi experiments. All in all an elightening video analysis once again brilliant work beggy kudos to you indeed.
