So a video of this method was requested by so many that I decided to try making one. I don't usually do videos like this so I don't have a proper setup, as is obvious from my failure to even keep the target in frame. Out of the 3 models I dyed, I managed to edit one that should show enough to understand the process.
All of these were printed on the Elegoo Mars and standard Elegoo Translucent resin, sliced in ChituBox and printed using 8s exposure time. Washed in alcohol for ~6 minutes, supports removed before curing with the help of hot water and cured in a UV chamber for 30 mins.
All the models were made by me as well.

Painting takes a LOT of time indeed, I prefer quick methods as it leaves me with more time to do the actual modeling. The video would've been so much better if I just had the cameras aimed a bit higher, learning experience still, glad you found it informative still :)

Thank you. Great results. I would like a bit more detail, when going through the process, and why you’ve done what you’ve done. Water, acetone. I will experiment with your method. Much appreciated.
@Kijaidesign
@Kijaidesign 6 ай бұрын
Acetone is to blend the inks, and also to remove excess inks, as these inks are super strong. Water is to wash the acetone diluted inks off the model. At this stage it was all trial and error to get the effect I wanted.

Amazing video! I’m trying so hard to get mine to come out like yours but I feel like no matter how much of the paint I put on it doesn’t get as dark as yours does. Is there any tip to making the paint stick better? I print, cure, then paint. And I have different models with different cure times too. Either way great videos and amazing work!

Amazing video, exactly what i was looking for 😀 So just to be sure, after printing in clear resin, we clean, cure, then paint normaly with those inks, clean again in "normal" water, let it dry and finish with normal glossy varnish? is that? Thanks in advance, and great work
@Kijaidesign
@Kijaidesign Жыл бұрын
Yeah pretty much, you can use acetone to blend the painted inks smoother, or to control the opacity a bit which is useful with the darker, stronger inks.

Thanks! It was just some glossy varnish, I had some leftover from a set that was called "3D effect", which I understand could be confusing but it really is nothing special, same as any other glossy varnish I've used. There are probably even better products for the clear coating too, I just used what I happened to have.

Very cool! I love this, very nice job. Quick question what was the acetone for? I only saw the resin figure dip in water.
@Kijaidesign
@Kijaidesign 4 жыл бұрын
It was applied with a brush so I could have some control over how much it dissolves the ink, and from which parts, dipping it in the water alone, without the acetone applied doesn't do much.

Can acetone damage the details of resin casting?
@TomAnsuini
@TomAnsuini 3 жыл бұрын
I use 99% alcohol instead of acetone. Is that wrong? Results look fine. Also found that dipping model in water doesn't do anything to the intensity of the ink. Because I'm a real beginner, I always over-apply ink (too much ink) and the dark colors just kill all the lighter (yellow) colors. It's a real skill that you have to control the gradients so well, especially in the demon fox with the black yellow and red. Whenever I apply black anywhere, that's it for the model. It gets everywhere and darkens everything, no matter how much alcohol I brush on afterwards. By the way, I just love all your models! Bravo!
@Kijaidesign
@Kijaidesign 3 жыл бұрын
I'm just doing trial and error, not qualified to say what's the right or wrong way, I don't think alcohol alone removes much dried ink though, which acetone can do. Water alone removes only the excess ink that pools in the crevices and such, but it also removes the ink/acetone mix after brushing it in. Dark inks are tough and you should dilute them with alcohol or even water before applying, or applying very lightly with a brush, however acetone can lighten even the darker inks just fine.
@TomAnsuini
@TomAnsuini 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kijaidesign thank you for the advice. It makes perfect sense now why you use water, I think that’s what I should do when the dark colour gets out of control and pools up. Thank you once again for your help😊

How to use acetone ? blend the color together and then into the water,right? it isn't smelling acetone good,how to proctect the body? mask eyeglasses and gloves,right?
@Kijaidesign
@Kijaidesign 2 жыл бұрын
You can use acetone to blend, reduce or even remove the color after you've applied it, the water helps to remove the dissolved ink. You need to use gloves for sure, it's bad for your skin, and mask too. I'm unsure of the need for eye protection, the fumes never irritated my eyes, splashes would probably be bad so it's always smart of course.
