In this video I restore an old rusty Continental American socket set box. The ratchet and sockets are 1/4 inch drive and made in Japan. Fortunately, the box did an amazing job at protecting the tools and they only needed a minor polishing. I attempted to powder coat the box blue, but it didn't work out. The blue powder coat was a candy clear coat meant for chrome objects, so instead I went with green. I also created a custom wooden tray to replace the cheap plastic tray.

This is just a tip. A peice of foam would be nice for the lid. It will cushion the tools and keep the tools from rattling. Just a tip. Nice restoration though. Have a good one.

I'm not a huge fan of how the wood turned out, but overall you gave it new life. I hate throwing out old tools, so you definitely saved them here!

The insert was too deep. You'll never be able to grab anything out of there but the sockets without using a magnet or something to pry them out. Great video to watch though.

Dear Mr. The box for the tools of socket wrenches, as you just made, have given me ideas, but I also have to make the box for various tools myself. But you make it all very beautiful and I not only enjoy it but also learn from it.

On that oak board, I would’ve made a u-shaped groove across the entire board across the horizontal pieces to better facilitate removal of those pieces. This would give my thumb and index finger a place to be able to go to aid in pulling out those long horizontal tool pieces. Otherwise, nice job!

Nice project. Just remember the final finish will ALWAYS depend on the prep work you put into it. Even powder coat will never make a questionable surface look flawless. But nice project all the same. Any time you save a tool is a great thing...

Great job!!! Love the wood insert. I work in a FOD environment and have to have individual shadows, but I’m going to do this. I prefer my old tools to new. They have character. Again. Great job!

Nice job. I liked the blue finish. It kind of looked like a hammered finish. A tip for filling the pitting if you want a smoother finish before painting or powder coating, use bondo. Dries quickly and easy to sand smooth.

You can tell that this tool box sat in the same place undisturbed for a very long time. I think the only change I would have made would have been to retain the plastic tray. It didn't look like it had become brittle or was falling apart. Could have also used it to create a mold out of silicon and made a new tray that way. Something possibly to try for next time. Still. Any save is a good one!

Should sand off or paint the lettering on the case. Couldn't see how much relief there was in the insert to allow removal of the rachets. Nice project.

It came out pretty good. Next time try a coat of primer and instead of powder paint, just a simple “baked “ enamel. The primer covers a multitude of sins, and the enamel will flow under heat very nicely. Also a chemical rust remover might do a slightly better job of rust removal... although the blaster looks like it did a good job. (The solution can get into micro-cracks a bit better). Also a router might have made the wood removal process a bit easier and faster for you. But everything looks great. Good job.

I had just that set there about 1982 and steel was very soft! The sockets striped out and the ratchet end sheared off. No I was not abusing the tool.

The work on creating the insert to replace the plastic interior was great. But being a nit picker (it's genetic), I could see some of the box edges were separating from other edges when you were measuring. The light was coming through the gaps. I am surprised you did not seal those to be safe. Sure the whole box is merely folded metal but a little reinforcement after the great job patching the letters in the top would have been the cherry on the top of such nice work.

You should maybe had consider using citric acid instead of media blasting to get the locking mechanism totally rust free. Also maybe do some slots around the extension so you can get it out from it's hole as it looked like it can be little tricky by hand
