Brigham of Brigham Larson Pianos explains why he changed his mind concerning Chinese piano manufacture. He shares how not only the piano industry, but other industries as well have seen a positive shift over the last 15 years. How has Hailun produced such quality pianos? Brigham gives several reasons, including Hailun pianos are not "stencil pianos", and Hailun Chen has married the strength of the West with the strength of the East. Brigham also shares three other reason why the Chinese piano industry has improved: information, computerization, and globalization.

Thank you. People's perceptions change slowly. It was that way first with Japanese products, then Korean and I guess it will slowly change with the Chinese products. There are still Europeans and Americans that think the best pianos are European or American, Japanese are a notch below and certainly Chinese can't seriously be considered as fine pianos. I strongly disagree. And, I think in maybe a decade, we may see Chinese grands, quite possibly Hailun concert grands, on stage at musical competitions with Europe and Japan's best. However, I doubt Hailun can keep their low price points for very much longer. There's too much quality in their pianos at that price point. They'll eventually have to go up and I also think Chinese products, at least quality products, will become more expensive and the cost to build there more expensive. I also think, as Hailun is a Chinese/European collaboration other Chinese manufacturers will form them and the piano industry will move forward. I expect Young Chang and the Japanese heavyweights to continue to also move forward in the evolution and advancement on the state of the art of pianos and there may be new innovations with pianos, some by Chinese manufacturers.

That's funny that the camera goes out of focus during the discussion about lenses. Haha! Thanks for this video, quite informative re Hailun pianos.

Hi, do you know something about Perzina pianos? I just tried one in a store and it sounded good, is a GP-133 upright, here in Spain can't find much info about it. Thanks

Brigham, do you think that Digital Pianos will eventually replace acoustic pianos?

No. But the technology is so advanced now you can add all the digital features you could imagine to an acoustic piano.

I’m in the saxophone business for four decades and the Taiwanese saxophones used to stink but now they’re very good but the Chinese horns are just awful along with the vast majority of all their junk they dump on the world. These pianos may play well but what about longevity and resale value? When it starts to fall apart who’s going to fix it? Then there’s their horrific human rights policies and their positions on the environment. Personally I stay away from all Chinese stuff, I don’t care how well it plays.

I don't have too many doubts about the longevity of Hailun pianos - they'll hold up really well. Resale value? - there are no doubts at all. The resale value won't be good, regardless of how well I'd maintain it. Not because they aren't a good quality product, but instead because they're not popular yet. I really wish I could steer my opinion and be more open to good quality Chinese made instruments.

@@KeepingOnTheWatch I seriously doubt that the resale value of these pianos will be good in our lifetimes. Look at Yamaha, you can get a really good one cheap. Why don’t you doubt the longevity? Just look at all the Chinese stuff you buy that breaks after a short time. They can’t even make an iPhone cord that lasts a year. A cord! And I hate to be ing it up again but their human rights issues are too big a deal for me to buy one, I don’t care how good they are but of course that goes overlooked because of people’s intrinsic selfishness for a low price and greed.

@@philbarone4603 From what I’ve read it appears that Hailun does use good quality materials in their pianos. So for that reason I believe they will hold up well for many years. I personally wouldn’t buy a used Hailun and I believe that not many others would either. Hence, I doubt the resale value will be good. It’ll take some time before people warm up to this brand. You mentioned Yamaha: I’d never consider this brand either.

@@KeepingOnTheWatch from what source do you derive your statement of good quality parts may I ask? I had an older yam that was fantastic. I have a 1907 Hamburg Steinway now and I wish I had kept the Yamaha too. Chick Corea plays them, so did Herbie Hancock for years and so does HJ Lim and lots of others. There’s different levels of Yamahas but I miss my 52 inch upright u3. Nevertheless I could never support China at this point in time.

@@philbarone4603 It’s difficult to give you one specific source - there have been various ones. Mostly KZfaq though and even though I can never bring myself to get a Hailun I am intrigued.
