As a matter of fact, this is quite common practice. I'm from the Netherlands and worked as a truck and bus mechanic. There are 3 types of tyres, all from brands like Michelin, Bridgestone etc. Those types are: Regroovable, retreadable and normal ones. Regroovable can be used for cutting new profile into the tyre until certain predefined depth. They are not used on front axle anymore after that, but on driven axle or trailer axle only. Retreadable tyres is what you see here and is normal practice as well. Can only be done once however by sending the tyres back to Michelin or Bridgestone. The tyres are not allowed back on front steering axle after that, but rather on driven axle or trailer axle.

While I admit that I'd prefer to never have to use a retreaded tire, I am nonetheless fascinated and impressed by the process shown here. In the U.S., retreaded tires went out of fashion a long time ago. (Part of the reason we have so many of them in our landfills.) It's nice to see this one get some new life.
@shyamdevadas60992 жыл бұрын
@Everythings Eventual Not so fast, sonny. I was born in the 60s and grew up seeing every gas station everywhere selling retread tires. But, starting in the 80s and 90s, inexpensive foreign-made tires began to arrive in the U.S. and the market for crappy retreads pretty much dried up for private vehicles. (Unless you were poor, you were too ashamed to have them. Its still the case.) The only constant markets for retreads have been trucking, agriculture, and some sectors of the fleet market. I just checked Wikipedia and in 2017 only 13% of disposed tires were resold...and only a small fraction of these were retreaded. I travel a lot and about the only places I consistently see retread tires for sale are in really poor, depressed areas. (Ex. Rust Belt towns, inner-cities, depressed rural areas, etc.) I'm guessing you're from such an area. As far as your claim that most of the tires sold in New York State are retreads, I summize two things: 1) You're really uneducated and 2) you're probably one of the poor lowlifes from one of these poor lowlife areas I see in my travels. In any case, now that you're done laughing your ass off, you can put your head back inside it (which is the place you seem to normally keep it.)

Haven't seen a retread tyre in Australia for quite a while, not sure if they still do them here but they used to be a relatively cheap option with fairly good mileage many years ago. Interesting video thank you.
Rare to find retread tyres for private cars nearly all are remanufactured for commercial use only due to the cost. Some companies that run large fleets of commercial vehicles actually rent their tyres. It is also possible with some very large commercial tyres to recut another tread when they get to a legal limit. made possible for the considerable depth of material left below the tread.
@bg1473 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much how they do it professionally in the US. I believe they do extensive testing with technology, and I am not sure how this particular process compares. In addition, they envelope the tire to create even pressure which I think they do here with the inner tube. Both use staples for temporary purposes.

Skillfully done, probably works for some poorer nations with non existent driving restrictions , lighter loads and slower traffic due to high volume of traffic but in no way can I see this tire be in any way legal in most of Europe or North America. Tires might be sold by unscrupulous dealers and used tire garages, as new, for all we know and many tires might even be ok in the short run but it's a risk I would rather not knowingly take.

This has been done by TVS in India for ages and from dad’s time we have used retread tyres & believe me retreding extends the life of the tyres by at least another 30K KM. Yes now that doesn’t happen the tyres are small and there is no scope for crude buffing of the tyres before laying on the treads. This can of course be done on the big truck ang bus tyres. The Govt Buses run on retread tyres and the the Transport authorities pass these vehicles when they come up for annual inspection.
