If you haven’t noticed, there’s a revolution afoot-with the world getting smaller in so many facets of our lives, from circuits to cars to tiny houses. Music gear is not immune, yet for us bassists, we’ve forever been taught that bigger means better. So it seems a little counter-intuitive for us to want something smaller, since our entire existence revolves around being “big”-be it big tone, moving big air, or playing the big strings on our instruments.
Enter the ELF from Trace Elliot, one of the biggest little amps I have ever seen. Beyond its incredibly small footprint and the initial wow factor, the amp could be one of those gotta-have type products for a myriad of reasons. I say could be, because to get past the initial sideshow attraction aspect of it, it has to sound good, too.
When I opened the ELF’s included carry bag, I was greeted by a straight-ahead-looking design with Trace Elliot’s familiar green adorning the solid-feeling enclosure. Given its size and that it’s lighter than a Carnegie Deli Rueben sandwich at just a hair over 1 1/2 pounds-yes, 1 1/2 pounds-it had better be rugged, since us musician types will likely be shoving it into a gig bag or backpack (or even a pocket). While our test unit did feel solid overall in its construction, the plastic housing where the IEC power cord connects felt a bit loose, which could pose a problem after prolonged use.
The front panel is about as no-nonsense as can be. There are two 1/4" jacks (one for input and one for headphones) that surround the five dials governing the gain, volume, and 3-band EQ. I was happy that Trace Elliot went with “normal-sized” controls rather than the mini variety-a move that will make on-the-fly adjustments in the real world easier. Finally, the ELF houses two small LEDs on opposite ends of the EQ section: one a signal indicator and the other to let you know the amp is powered on.

Honestly, it makes no sense that they only offer a 200w head that only does 135w rms at 8 ohms with a 400w cabinet.., its great, but they should offer an 800w rms head that'll do 400w rms at 8 ohms and 800w rms at 4 ohms to actually take full advantage of their 2x8 cabinets, then for the micro elf, they should just offer a single 8 inch 4ohm version of the 2x8 cabinet to handle the elfs full 200w rms... that cabinet could be made to be only 13 - 14 lbs, it would be a better fit for the small elf amp.... they have a great product, but idk what they were thinking tbh.... wish you could pass this information on to the higher ups... I'd totally pay 700 bucks for a larger version of the elf...

How do you know? I'm a long term TE user and managed to get 3 minutes on one at the London Bass show and though it showed promise, 3 minutes isn't the same as giving it a good workout. Even so, I placed my order and paid my £250 after being advised the delivery date would be "late March" - didn't happen - still waiting. Come on TE, get your act together and get these delivered to the UK, after all this is probably your biggest potential market. Do you know the best form of advertising? Word of mouth - I'll be more than happy to "sing TE's praises" once I've actually plugged mine in and given it a good going over.

Great little amp....whenever I'm in a hurry. I grab this little thing and it has performed flawlessly. I get compliments from my bandmates how good it sounds for such a tiny thing and previous bass players would bring big heads and didn't sound as good.

It’s multi-band compression, not limiting. Also Trace amps are known for that big mid scoop via the Pre Shape button. You need mids to be heard though. 😃

In the UK we've been waiting since the initial promised delivery date of "late March" - now in mid June we're advised the delivery date is "mid to late July" - didn't have these issues when TE was a British company - from what I can see TE has been neglected, with insufficient investment and development, since being taken over by Gibson, then Peavey. I've been using TE equipment, on and off. for the past 25 years - I'm a big fan - but even though I've paid up front for one of these, I feel this is a "do or die" moment for TE - I can see this as potentially the demise of the brand if it doesn't live up to customers' expectations. I'm sure there will be other TE fans looking at whether there is further development proposed. If so when can we expect the 500 and 800 watt models? I'm just hoping that this isn't too little too late...

Thank you for the video. I have a 1988 (yes 1988) Trace Elliot (used to be 4- 10") combo that I cut in half because it was so heavy and me being 59 well...you know the rest. I have it now (just today I made the conversion) with 150 watts at 4 ohms with 2 -10" 1999 Eden speakers. It's still heavy at 65.4 lbs.; however, it sounds real warm and punchy (no tweeter). That said, I don't like the new integrated circuit amps in general. They sound good, but durability is shit. I am sorry, to disagree but my Gallien MB200 it's starting to make a noise. It sounds like a pulsating hum, a friend told me it may be a filter. It is about 6 years old and costed me $200.00, but I am old school, I used to have amps that lasted 20 and 30 years (SVT's, Acoustic, Fender, etc.) and that it's expensive and heavy. The components of these micro amps are not good enough for a professional standard. I cannot buy an amp, use for 5 years and one day go to the gig and it's not usable. The old amps, (I'm starting to sound like my father) have more reliable components and usually you can feel when something is wrong and give it a tune up or something. Of course I paid $1,200 for that Trace Elliot in 1988 (yes 1988 wow!), but it still works and sounds great today. I guess you can have a small amp like this to take to rehearsals or to have it in a by-amp system, but always have a nice better amp at home for special situations or as a back-up. Good luck everyone!

Peavey should make an 800w rms version of the elf head, that'll do 400w rms at 8 ohms and 800w rms at 4 ohms so people can actually get the most out of those 2x8 cabinets, it literally makes no sense that they offer 8 ohm cabinets that handle 400w rms with a head that does 135w rms at 8 ohms... so much potential thats wasted... with the mini elf head, they should offer a single "8 version of the 2x8 cabinet that's 4 ohms, that'll handle the full 200w rms out of it, faital could custom make 4 ohm versions of those 16 ohm 8" drivers, they already offer 8 ohm versions of them, a smaller micro cabinet like that would be a far better match for the micro elf head, especially for those who can't lift much, "for some people even 27 pounds can be a challenge" Plus the single 8" driver cabinet could be made to be only about 13 - 14lbs and STILL sound great, the model they got going is great, but poorly thought out as far as product planning goes, the stuff that they have currently is well designed, but there is so much more they could be doing to expand the trace elliot line...... Now then, as far as the bigger elf goes "that they SHOULD make", I'D pay the 700 bucks for a high quality bigger version of the mini elf to actually power those 2x8 cabinets correctly... idk what their design teams are thinking over there, but it's really not hard to execute something so simple that could be truly great... no offense guy's, but please do these thing's, there are a lot of people out there who would appreciate something like this...

How do you add more than one cabinet to the ELF? i.e. The 2 x 8 and two 1 x 10 cabinets? A total of four speakers. And how do i connect the two parallell inputs in the 2x8 cabinet with only one out of the amp?
@babayaga1767

i use 2 2x8s. it really beefs up the tone in a rock band. i usually run gain around 1 or 2 oclock, output about 8 or 9 oclock. the cabs have 2 speakon connections. just plug one cab to the other.

It is completely fine to play a guitar through a bass amp/cabinet. You dont want to play a bass through a guitar rig though because the speakers on a guitar cabinet would normally not be able to handle the low end coming from a bass. i know you posted this 8 months ago but i hope i can at least help anyone else that comes across this video.

Until this day, I only used a Hartke HA3500 bass amp, so I don't know or care about the real TE sound. Plus I used the Hartke on guitar as well as part of a dual amp setup, which is something you might not want to suggest a TE to.
@micktomazou
@micktomazou 7 жыл бұрын
"There are none so blind as those who will not see..." TE's reputation is built on the original "real TE" sound - if you "don't know or care" why comment? The fact you play through a Hartke doesn't improve your chances of being taken seriously by anybody who does know and care. I suppose that for some "ignorance is bliss..."

Power ratings are deceptive. Usually listed as peak power. Momentary power. This "200watt class D" amp will kick out 200 watts, for a moment. Peak power rating. Transients. This amp probably runs about 20 or 30 watts. lol....... Peavey's micro bass amp puts out 1,000 watts, continuous. RMS> 1,800 watts peak.
@crimsun7186
@crimsun7186 7 жыл бұрын
28.3 V RMS on 4 ohms gives you 200W and 100W in 8 ohms. Bass amps usually are rated for continuous power, as opposed to power amps, which will list you peak power instead.
