Just bought an 02 Silverado 4.8 extended cab long bed. I personally never thought I’d by a Chevy, considering I owned 2 mopars before that, but I surprisingly can say the Chevy is the best truck I’ve ever had. I’ve driven a handful of fords and dodges but this Silverado is just a smile on my face everyday. I ragged on them for years and now I see why everyone loves them

Yeah, I was a solid Chevy guy cuz my dad had a 98 1500 w a 350, & his current 04 GMC Yukon. It’s a nice vehicle, but it gets 13mpg. I was a chevy/GM guy until I got a 95 7.3PSD as a first car. Did some minor power mods, exhaust & new sensors/new wearable parts. Had a lot of fun with it. I drove it for a year & then got tired of the auto, & all the computers, so I sold it & got a 93 idi w a ZF5. Oh yeah & the 95 had weak injectors & needed a head gasket. I love running my idi on waste oil & ive done most of the updates & coolant additives.

I have been a Gm parts counter man for 23 years These were very good trucks what i used to see the most was the fuel pumps when we started getting more ethanol in the fuel they were going out like crazy the i shaft in the column was big ,oil pump failure after they get old ,seat bases were cracking on our large bretheren ,lets not forget the window regulator those cables would fray....and cables on the end gate latch would bust...the instrument cluster that was big,water pumps and fan clutches too the tail gate handle bezels will fall off the yokes on the rear end leak around the seal ...the center console lid will break for sure master switches and seat recliner levers,cracking dashes,the clips on the tailgate handle the green and the red both crack catalytic converters were going out for a while..and another biggie is the blend door actuators in the dash those will go bad...but really these trucks were very good most of that stuff is normal wear and tear

@bondpit8750
@bondpit8750 4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Relph I don’t consider all of that stuff ‘normal’ wear and tear. It’s more that an annoyance when interior stuff like seat bases, consoles, dash cracking, instrument cluster failures, etc. go bad on a $40-60 thousand dollar vehicle, even past 100k. That’s just cheap parts sourcing and GM bean counters of the era f’ing s**t up. The drive trains are bulletproof for the most part if properly maintained. Rust can be and is an issue if not properly addressed with an aftermarket rust proofing, like Krown, or similar.

Thank goodness mine was garage kept and super clean. I plan on keeping this rig for as long as she lives and then some. Good video! Thanks for taking the time for this! I am currently restoring my fathers 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 reg cab 5.3L. Everything you mentioned in this video is what has, at one time or another gone wrong with this truck. The break lines blew twice, and the rust is unbelievable. Had no emerg break either as the cables rusted through. One of my interior rockers were completely gone and the rest of the rockers were almost gone. Big hole in fender under fuze box, and the 8ft box was completely unsafe to drive with the truck after 19 years of Canadian salt. There is a new box on it now & all the rust will be gone with new steel fenders, rockers and paint. This truck is going to last me atleast another 20 years from now!

I’m currently going through the TLC process with mine. ‘06 Sierra 1500 Z71 w/ a 5.3 and 317,000 miles. it could use a new top end, it’s got that lifter tick you hear on a lot of these trucks, it goes away after the first 5-6 miles though. the bottom end of the engine still runs great. Would it be worth working on this engine or should I explore junkyards? I’ve done front brake rotors, calipers, and pads. Valve-stem seals. Driver side valve cover (pcv valve) and PCV hose. Knock sensors. Intake mani. gasket. Valley cover gasket. Valve cover gaskets.

this is why i love my 2005 GMC Sierra. it was a custom built from the factory so it has features that not even my dad's 2006 has, like heated leather seats, six-cd changer and folding mirrors. he also has a 2011 and it just looks so weird with it's boxy exterior. it also doesn't ride as nice, while mine sits lower to the ground. since then i've upgraded the receiver, all the internal and external lights with white LEDS, , new headlights, tailights, third brakelight. installed a halo system and removed a bunch of the tacky chrome i got tired of seeing. i'm probably never gonna sell this thing and will probably turn it into a performance truck later on.

The 5.4 was used by koenigsegg and the ford 5.4 gt. It's also available in the dually f350. The reason they fail is because they are actually used unlike the vortecs. I haven't seen a 5.3 in a 3500hd Silverado or in a dually. The transmissions mated to the 5.3 will blow up within 100k. The triton engines are amongst the hardest working engines ever built. They fail around 350k-1m miles and the triton 6.8 which is just a 5.4 with 2 extra cylinders is used in the f750 so to say they are a bad engine is just stupid. It certainly is not perfect but sit the obvious choice if you will be doing any type of work with your truck

5.4 in the ford GT is not the same as in the trucks, its a DOHC 32v 5.4, based off the 03/04 Cobra, but with more displacement. The truck engines are nowhere near the quality of the DOHC ones.

+97taurusSHO they share the same design. The truck engines are not perfect but they sure are better than the competition. The modular engine came out in 1996 cross-threatens mains and deep skirts. The ls came out in 1998 totally ripping off its block design. Idk what people expect from the 5.4. It does everything it's supposed to do. I have beaten a Cummings 5.9 in a 5.4 triton I trust it with my life idk how it can get any better than that honesty. Idk what you guys use your trucks for but mine works and it puts other trucks including diesels to shame idk what people want honestly

Rear knock sensor usually goes out from moisture getting trapped under the rubber boot on the harness. Rear tailgate handle bezel and handle break often. The cab hinges bend easily and are welded to the cab so in order to replace them you have to cut them off and drill holes to mount new ones. Front end parts wear faster too but they ride amazing

I bought a 2003 6.0L 2500HD when I was stationed in Alaska and still have it as my main farm truck on my farm in Missouri. It's towed a C-Dory, 24' Bayliner, equipment trailer with various tractors and other things. It has spent a good part of its life off road and has been from Prudhoe Bay on the north slope of Alaska to Panama City Florida. I initially had a problem with the push button 4wd selector not always engaging but it sorted itself out after the first year and no problems since. My drivers seat has a hole on the bolster like you said and my gauge cluster took a crap about 3 years ago so I bought a ScanGauge II and plugged it into my OBDII port and I just use that. I have had a persistent minor leak from my master cylinder and I am getting ready to replace the intermediate shaft but this is the first truck I have been completely satisfied with and still have no desire for a new one. My paint has held up well and I have almost no rust for some reason though I have been through several bumpers from them rusting out. Its been a great truck.

8.1 did last through the entire 1st gen run. If memory serves me right, the 03-07 was detuned a little versus the 01-02. It’s worth mentioning that the 8.1 was not an LS engine, as it was modeled after the 454 cubic inch. My dad had a 01 3500 with the 8.1. It was a great truck, but we lived in Washington state, so no salt on the road. The worst rust it had was limited to the undercarriage. Edit: I hate autocorrect.

A 2002 8.1 Allison 2500HD gets the same fuel mileage as a 1988 3500 5.7L 4 speed manual. Both are extended cabs. When you need power, the 8.1 is awesome and engine braking is a plus with the 8.1. Compared to the other big block gas engines out there, the fuel mileage of the 8.1 is best in my opinion.

I have an 07 GMC Sierra classic SLT with 250,000km. I've had it since Feb 2010 it has been a very reliable truck. I've kept is undercoated so rust Isn't an issue, and i do live east coast Canada so same climate as you. I do however have the same steering clunk which I really only notice on the highway changing lanes. Thank you for letting me know the issue! I have also had issues with break lines until I replaced every single one on the truck with stainless 4 years ago, after chasing a few. They came pre bent and only cost $500 Canadian for all of them, best $500 I spent on the truck. The only complaint I have is the chrome door protectors are starting to bubble and I have the famous GM check engine light. and warns me to close my gas cap. I am told it is a small evap leak which does nothing but make the computer think the gas cap is open. so i bought a code reader to read and delete that code.I normally have to erase it 1-2 times per month. Bottom line is i cant complain about the 1st gen. I have had it for 9 years now and still love it. This truck owes me nothing, and I cant say that about any other vehicle I have ever owned. and as for fuel mileage I avg. 15.2L per 100km I would say that is pretty dam good for a 12 year old truck. not sure if you remember how bad the old S10 with a 4.3 was. I had 1 and that was a fuel eater. Half the truck for twice the fuel haha.

our 99 chevy express van had the older vortec 305 (gen 1 style block) and it managed to get 20mpg highway ,really good for a full size van that weighs over 5000lbs. the 305 only had 225hp but seemed to have plenty of torque ,we had it full to the brim with wet fire wood and drove up crazy steep NC mountains and it didn't even kick down into a lower gear. What more could we ask for? 20mpg, overloaded and it powered right up mountain back roads, i call that good enough.

I have a 04 Tahoe and he is pretty much spot on. I had to solder my instrument panel in order to repair my gear indicator. I had to replace intermediate shaft/bearing. The interior is really cheap (peeled dash, ripped seats, worn buttons, glove box, rear storage). But luckily, I don't live in the rust belt so mine is still pretty rust free. I still really love the simplicity and cheap parts.

I just bought a 2001 Chevy. It had high mileage on it. I had to fix a lot of stuff, but it seems okay now.

I love my 21 yr old truck and everything you said was spot on. The interior looks new except for the foam flaking off from my seat and the dials that don't work. It runs great but I get teased about the rust and the faded paint.

Jokes on them, they're paying through the nose for a truck that won't last as long and you're beating the system rolling around with money in your pocket. 4.8 or 5.3...?

Didn't see anyone mention anything on the water pumps. Water pumps are a common thing to fail/leak on the model year as well. Luckily it's pretty easy/cheap to replace (unless you accidently snap a bolt in the block like I did). Had a 05 sierra slt z71 5.3 with 210,xxx miles on it when I traded it in and I still miss it. I beat the piss out of it and only had a few issues but luckily I am mechanically inclined and was able to fix most of it myself. Loved how comfortable it was and how it felt driving it. Transfer cases on the 4x4s like to give some trouble once you get over 150,000 miles. Had pump rub issue causing pin hole leak and chain rubbed through making it noisey. Also abs/wheel hub problems will potentially arise. Had to change front driver side wheel hub, was throwing abs light.

Water pump was the first thing I thought of that wasn't mentioned, I agree it's an easy fix though but premature failure due to poor design. Seal leak on the rear of the pump

Death wobble is an easy fix. Almost always out of balance tires and/or worn suspension bushings. I've had it on Jeeps, Dodges and Fords with high mileage. Definitely one of the cheaper fixes.

I’ve got a 2002 Sierra 4x4 its my first truck and I was super worried as to why my tail gate felt loose but after watching this I feel much better knowing that most of them were like this Also the suicide door handles are really poorly made replaced one on mine Once already it’s broken again

I love my '05! Got 300k hard miles of out of my '04 and sold it running well. My complaint is that the water pumps fail too often. They're easy to fix but expensive.

Good review. You forgot about the Front Impact Sensors, Evap. Vent Solenoid, CD Players, steering wheel bulbs, and the Gremlins that haunt the HVAC system causing hot air to be thrown when all you really want is A/C. Everything else I agree with too.

1999 Chevy Silverado Z71 Extended Cab with 248,572 miles on it and it's still running strong. I was suprized to learn it has a 4.10 rear end being a half ton but other than the cab rust, everything is decent and even the A/C still blows cold.
