I remember playing Halo Wars in a rock-paper-scissors strategy mentioned in the game's guidebook or from in-game tips, which is infantry beats aircraft, tanks beat infantry, aircraft beats tanks.

Unit counters exist, but are almost always completely unnecessary. It's sad when simple rock-paper-scissors counters are "overthinking it" in a supposed RTS.

@@DWTerminator All unit counters are almost always necessary when powerful units come into play and it's possible the rock-paper-scissors counters in this "Light RTS" game was originally meant to be played in Ensemble Studios original RTS IP for console players that sadly got canned by Microsoft and replaced with a Halo RTS game that Bungie was none too happy about. I still find it really sad Ensemble Studios was closed down a month before the release of Halo Wars. They were the top dogs of RTS games to the Age of Empires series and Microsoft (now Xbox Game Studios) made the mistake of closing the studio down over a bad Halo RTS game that managed to sell like hotcakes. We could've had a proper sequel to Age of Empires III and maybe an improved version of Halo Wars than the one we got from Creative Assembly. Oh well, one can only dream.

I had a lot of fun with the game, but after delving into more advanced rts games I now realize it’s not good. Too bad they designed the thing for consoles. It would’ve been interesting to see what kind of game we would’ve gotten if they weren’t limited by controllers.

I've never been a big fan of RTS games. I tried AOE2 and couldn't get into it, because I felt like there was way too much shit to remember. My First RTS was Populous: The Beginning. It's a pretty simple RTS as far as combat is concerned. Most of the strategy in the game comes down to deciding which spells to charge first and how you utilize them. Another reason I feel I couldn't get into RTSs, was because I was so used to Populous: The beginning and Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 having a units panel that made it easy to keep track of all your units and micromanage them, without having to go to where they are. I personally don't think highly of Halo Wars. I think it's ok at best. A couple things you didn't mention for the selection controls is that you can cycle through the selection of units you have by type with the right trigger and you can cycle through different groups of units on the map by pressing down on the D-pad.

I've been waiting anxiously for a proper review of Halo Wars in years since its release date, and most game reviewers out there barely scored this game lower than a 6/10 (3/5), which is just sad, and in all honesty, it definitely deserves the 3/10 (1.5/5 in your case) score after all. At least it's not those awful Commandos Console ports which are borderline unplayable due to being stealth games requiring precision and quick movement. I am still baffled that Kalypso decided it was a "great" idea to try porting them to consoles again while still keeping the actual designed for consoles FPS spin-off Strike Force delisted. (Outside of Zoom platform, who worked out a deal with the previous publishers so they could keep selling it even after Kalypso got the series rights.)

lol. I heard about this in development years ago and just snorted at the idea of a console-only RTS. Also funny that this apparently manages to be far more simplistic even than the *original* 1994 Command & Conquer. Between Tiberian Wars, Ensemble folding, DOTA, it's no wonder the RTS genre died for good in the late 2000s. Thank god AoE2 got a remaster with many excellent expansions, if not for that, I don't think a single good RTS has been made since.. Dawn of War II?
@DWTerminator

The traditional base-building RTS has definitely been more or less dead for the better part of 15 years or so, at least outside of titles that aim at more niche areas of the genre. Really doesn't help that most of the ones that tried to "revive" it thought that copy-pasting Starcraft would somehow work. Tempest Rising is at least trying to bring back the C&C style but other than that, there's not much on the horizon that indicates the genre will return in force any time soon.

It’s really interesting seeing a review of this game from the perspective of someone who actually knows what he’s talking about when it comes to rts games. When I played this I had fun with it, but after trying out more advanced rts games I now realize the game is filled with bad design choices and missed opportunities. It’s such a shame that Ensemble went out the way they did. If this game was made for pc I’m sure it could’ve been great (I have a similar story when it comes to Halo where I grew up with the series, but after playing more advanced fps games I now recognize the series has a lot of flaws and missed opportunities. For anyone reading this I’m not just talking about 343’s dumpster fires, but also the Bungie games. It would be interesting to see what a reimagining of the series with pcs in mind and better writing would be like). It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the sequel. I like how brutal your videos are. Even if I love the games you cover I still find your videos to be super entertaining and fascinating.

Too bad the game doesn’t have proper mod support. Then we could radically overhaul the game into what it should’ve been. The cool mods we have now gives us a good look into what this game could’ve been if Ensemble wasn’t limited by the console. I like how a lot of the mods back port the best elements of HW2 into the first game. Speaking of HW2, even though most rts fans wouldn’t really like it the thing should go to Steam so the people who do want to play it won’t have to go through the awful Windows Store.

At 14:40 you mention your belief that .308 was an outdated cartridge even at the time that Halo CE was released. What cartridges do you feel were better than .308 at that time? Usually, the thing I hear brought up as the .308 killer is 6.5 Creedmoor, a cartridge that won't be invented for another 6 years after Halo CE's release, so I'm very curious to hear what you think is better
@Garcia1995
@Garcia1995 5 ай бұрын
He probably means outdated as being used as a standard common ground infantry rifle.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 5 ай бұрын
The thing about .308 is that it's a battle rifle cartridge that's been relegated to MG and DMR use for the better part of the last 50 years. While it's fine for those applications, it's been obsolete for standard infantry use since the 1960s. Most infantry are better off with a lighter, smaller, less powerful round that is far more manageable to shoot and that they can carry more of. Hence 5.56 and 5.45 being the current standards, though they're somewhat outdated these days too. For military long-range applications (sniping, specifically), .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua Mag well outclass .308 and had been in use for quite some time before Halo was even in development. Regardless, humanity shouldn't be using 20th or 21st century ammunition as its standard in the 26th century. They should be using *at bare minimum* some sort of caseless ammo, but really they should be using mostly magnetically-accelerated weapons or directed energy weapons.

Since they’re putting a bunch of their games on Steam that might be a possibility (assuming they’re smart about it and make MCC style collections). It’s so funny how the hardcore Sony fans are losing their minds that more people will be able to play their games, and that they’ll be on a platform where they’ll actually be preserved. @user-xo9ig8kc3u If someone’s primary a console player it’s fine as an introductory title (or at least it would be if the pacing was better and it introduced elements in a better way) it’s perfectly fine. But, if you’ve played other rts games that are designed for pcs then you’ll come away seeing it as a vacuous experience. The sequel has more depth in the gameplay, but it’s still pretty bare bones due to console limitations. It’s such a shame the game turned out that way because we could’ve gotten something really good if Ensemble weren’t forced to make it console exclusive, they actually went all in instead of expending time and resources on other projects that weren’t given approval, and if Bungie wasn’t so cancerous and were actually willing to work with them. It would be interesting to see what a reimagining of this game designed for pc would be like. Same goes for the mainline games.

I’ve been reading the comments on your other Halo videos and WOW! Halo fans are some of these most spergy unbelievably cancerous people (I’ve already known that, but seeing the way they react whenever someone bashes their sacred cow is another thing). Someone once said the Halo community is the Sonic fandom of Halo and that is 100% accurate. There are SO MANY parallels between those two. I grew up with the Halo series and put who knows how many hours into the games, so it holds a very special place in my heart. That being said, I’m well aware it has various flaws and you can make a lot of numerous ways 343 and Bungie could’ve avoided certain mistakes and made the games better. There’s a lot of missed opportunities when it comes to story and gameplay (for me one of the biggest is the fact there’s no human enemies. We should’ve been fighting against humans and alongside Brutes as the Arbiter prior to the Great Schism. Human enemies should’ve been part of Infinite since the Banished will let anyone join regardless of species, but the game never once gives you that information. We also should’ve had a dlc campaign where you play as an Elite who’s sent in various loosely connected missions during Reach). If someone criticizes things I like I’ll disagree with them and try to refute them if they get things wrong, but I’m not going to attach my ego to a video game. Assuming you read this, what are some of the ways you would’ve improved Halo? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that.

Neither the world nor the gameplay of the Halo titles ever looked interesting to me, so I used to assume that the story must be the good part of those games, that is until I saw the reviews of them on this channel. I found it baffling that even after CoD dethroned the franchise, pretty much everybody was "super excited" when the next Halo got announced, or showcased, "this is gonna be big, man". At least that seems to be finally over with Infinite... In 500 years I doubt any of caliber today's calibers will be around, we already came close to adopt caseless ammunition once, and although that fell through, 7.62x51 itself is facing serious competition now from both above (.338 Norma and LM), and below (6.8x51mm).

Most of the praise for Halo’s story comes from a combination of the fact that most FPS games have beyond atrocious narratives, and Bungie did a good job of presenting the story in a way that gave the illusion of depth. There’s also an expanded universe with a an INSANE range in quality, but most Halo fans haven’t read any of the books. The closest they’ll get is watching spergy manchildren talk about the books. I grew up with the series, but recently got into far more substantive fps games and have been looking at the games I loved with a more critical eye. There’s so many missed opportunities with Halo that would’ve greatly improved the games and setting.

Most people like it for the multiplayer. Sometimes you can still hear cries in the distant from the die hard Halo Fans who's servers got taken down. Then its a SciFi game. We don't have that many. You are also allowed to drive a cool looking but piss poor tank that offers zero protection because dumb developers. And you could fly around with a Banshe from time to time which is pure fun. Its small stuff like this that makes people like a game, or hate it. Not to mention console players were blown away by how "smooth" the gamepad controls worked. In the past some GameUrinalists comlpained how awkward the dual thumbstick controls were.... like the one idiot from GameSpot, for the PS1 game Alien Resurrection. But Halo made it popular and its now an industry wide standard. That made many people happy which is again, a reason why so many people speak well about Halo. Even if the video games are cr*p at worst and mediocre at best. Can't say too much about the Lore. Because i don't read the books and i hate god awful Flood. Dumbest Plot device ever. But if the books are even 1% of the TV show then dog$h!t isn't even comming close to describing this travesty of a franchise....

Too long, don't read: I grew up thinking Halo was overrated but recently replayed it and changed my mind. I actually started playing Halo 1 again recently. I haven't played it since a kid and while I beat it, I never understood the story and the games afterwards were spent playing multiplayer with friends and family. I've always thought the halo series was overrated and never wanted to replay the series for the single player campaign until recently. Let me start by saying this.... Halo 1 was completely ahead of it's time. I now see why my cousin and everybody else was obsessed with it so long ago. The music...god the music. The gameplay. For it's time it released in 2001, it was completely ahead of it's time. If you think about it, really took first person shooter gameplay and refined it. They had all these mechanics that complimented each other in combat like melee, grenades, your shields, switching and experimenting with the guns. The level design. I personally loved the level design. Having vehicles was awesome to traverse but having these huge maps really gave you the feeling that you were really walking on the surface of the ring, of Halo. It felt grand and epic. The story is amazing. I don't know why I didn't understand it as a kid and didn't care but it's pretty cool as a whole. The particle effects from the guns and explosions. Riding the scorpion tank across iced over lakes and seeing ice particles shoot out. Overall, when you add up everything, it really is an amazing game and a strong reminder as to why it had the popularity that it did. It always seemed like a simple first person shooter to me as a kid. Playing it now, you realize just how polished and refined everything was. You can really tell a ton if money went into development, I mean hell, it was supposed to be a real time strategy game at first with a birds eye view. So much has changed and it was for the better. I recommend you go back and play it. I'm 33 and have games in my life I always thought were overrated but going back, it's easy to see why they were so good.
