On the embellishment: I (an admittedly biased Avs fan) feel like there were a few dives by Dallas this game and they used it as both a "oh we can't call a pp this late in a game like this" as well as a "make-up" for not having called any of the others

Agreed. Robertson falling like a sack of bricks for getting tapped on the helmet was pretty eye-rolling
@zackerymitchell3835
@zackerymitchell3835 21 күн бұрын
High sticking is high sticking. Embellishment doesn’t make sense if you are calling a penalty on the other team for whatever (high sticking in this case). Every team has players who 100% act a little dramatic after a penalty. But the question is… Did Robertson take a stick to the head and the answer is yes. Embellishment should be called when a player is trying to draw a penalty for something that did not happen. My opinion… Call it the rules or whatever you want. As it exists now embellishment is often used to even up penalties that are at late or critical points in the game.

@zackerymitchell3835
@zackerymitchell3835 21 күн бұрын
@@1337slic3 That’s why I said “My opinion..” - I know what the rule book says about diving and embellishment. I’m still allowed an opinion on the topic whether I agree with how it’s defined or not. Is the NHL concerned about what I think? No.. But this subject is and has been a hot topic. That said, where in the NHL rule book does it say that officiators shall avoid calling PPs late in the game? And where does it say that they should “make-up” for missed/non-calls earlier in the game? If they missed a call, they missed a call… There were several missed calls for both Dallas and Colorado last night. This happens in every NHL game to every NHL team. The concept of not impacting the game and/or looking for opportunities to equalize the PP chances for each team is oxymoronic. The officiators trying to “‘make-up” gives the impression that they are dismissing PP opportunities for the team that has already had more. This creates an environment where one team can be risky with penalties while the other has to be more careful. As hockey fans.. We think that the officiators are targeting our team or calling the game poorly when we see this.

I found it amusing that the announcers told us in OT that Dallas was #2 in the league for comeback wins, but neglected to mention that the team with the most comebacks was... Colorado. Very proud of my guys. Shannon is right, you don't let them off the mat. They do not quit. Georgiev was solid after the first and spectacular in OT, wouldn't have blamed him at all for one of those getting past him. I thought Wood was #29 for a second there on the breakaway when he was 0-60 in two strides. That kind of exchange happens a lot - furious press on one end, then the puck is loose and the score is on the other side. I won't be surprised to see this happen again with the opposite result in this series.

I think the embellishment was the fact that he went down on a soft hook. There wasn't much force, so while the hook impacts the play, it wasn't enough to take the player out. I think the ref looks at it as "Yes, this is a hook and it messed up your flow. But you chose to go down to ensure hooking was called instead of playing through." And, yeah, you don't need that kinda NBA nonsense in the NHL.

To be honest, I don't think Dallas intended to let the Avs back into the game. I think it was more about the Avs getting their legs back and figuring out Dallas. I still think Dallas played a good game and will be a tough out. Even if the Avs sweep the Stars, I can see every game being a nail-biter.

So, Dallas has to win game 2 or it could be a fast series? I'm having Deja Vu to the Dallas / Vegas series. The first two wins didn't propel my Knights. ESPN had their own game... how to screw with the fans. They cut away from the last 45 seconds or so of the third period of NYR / CAR where Carolina had a power play to show the pre-game skating of this game, then somebody probably got on the Heidi Phone and tore somebody a new one until they went back to it. Then they cut away from this game to go back to the eastern game OT, and I couldn't guess the new channel fast enough to see the first goal. I think it switched from ESPNU to ESPN2 to ESPN over the course of the night.

Im with you Shannon… I don’t consider myself to be one that dwells on missed calls and poor officiating. But I want to vent about this.. At the time that Hintz was taken down and then called for embellishment Dallas had a lot of O zone pressure at an extremely critical point. Dallas would have had a really big opportunity to score and finish the game in regulation. I get refs not wanting to have that large of an impact on a game but they had a much larger impact by evening this up with an embellishment call. Some have said that it evened out because of the “non-call” for embellishment on Robertson earlier in the game. Do I think Robertson was a bit dramatic, maybe.. But it’s still an illegal stick infraction and a missed call at one point in the game does not constitute a completely blown/inappropriate call later in the game especially at such a critical moment. Furthermore, the argument could be made that the Avs likely have the advantage at 4 on 4. So if this entire series is as close as game 1 like everyone is expecting it to be and Dallas falls in game 7.. One can look back at this call and ask “what if…? That call has so much potential to impact the outcome of the series. This is exactly what the refs want to avoid right? Again, I don’t question officiating often.. I don’t even really ask “what if…?” because well.. it doesn’t matter. But - My suggestion to you. A video or maybe even a video series maybe in the off season about blown calls with similar circumstances in which officiating may have very well made the difference in the series or game.
