James Brown Miller was an American outlaw and professional hitman in the old west. His looks were deceiving and one of his nicknames was Deacon Jim Miller because of his manners as well as regular attendance at church. But there is a reason why he was also referred to Killer Miller.

Rhett, I really enjoyed this Old West video about outlaw/hitman, J.B. Miller, he definitely had a varied lifestyle. It's interesting how his wife, Sallie's father was alot like her husband, inregards to his background about various murders of witnesses, etc. Loved the scenic background of Fort Worth from the cemetery. Great investigating and presentation of this story, as always. Take care 🐎

Another great video as always Rhetty. John Wesley Hardin actually used Wesley Clements as one of his aliases. There's a channel here on KZfaq called Wild West Extravaganza that done a video on Jim Miller awhile back. I can't remember if I have mentioned this channel to you before or not. I read that before being hanged Jim Miller asked if he could put his coat on that he always wore but the hanging party wouldn't let him. But one of them put the coat on him after he was dead. I always wondered if he actually did have anything to do with Pat Garrett's murder or not.
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of things about Jim we will never know. Even if we take his supposed confession of 51 men as truth we don't know who or how. If he was admitting that then was that his personal number? Maybe that doesn't count all the ones he paid others to do. It could be possible he had something to do with Garretts death. Jim and his family were certainly dangerous and not something I would want to get tangled up with. I believe you mentioned that channel before and I think you mentioned that channel before. Is it sort of a podcast style?

Thanks for the research. I saw the picture of the lynching in a hamburger shop in Ada back in the eighties. I have been interested in his story ever since. A lot of twists and turns and you navigated it really well. The famous rancher and cattle drover "Shanghai" Pierce was a member of the cattle association posse that hung Harden's cousin. When he found out Harden was looking for him he went to Winfield Kansas and stayed in a hotel there. I suspect he went because his friend G.W. Miller lived there. I saw a letter that G. W. wrote to him in the eighteen eighties ordering 2000 head of cattle with a date of delivery and a promise of payment on arrival. The cattle were there within two weeks of the delivery date. G.W. and Shanghai got into a argument in the lobby of the hotel that ended in with a big fight. Witnesses said it was not a fight, they were trying to kill each other. The Miller House is still lived in at 9th and Walton in Winfield. Joe Miller rode a thoroughbred horse to death in the land run to get the property where the 101 ranch was built. They moved from Winfield after that.

Thank you for watching and sharing some of the history with Pierce. I need to go and check out that Miller House in Winfield. I don't think I have ever been to that city before. I know the event in Ada has always been a big story here in Oklahoma but I think many do not understand how bad Jim was nor his family connections. They were certainly a bad family to get tangled up with.

Well, I'm not murdered often, but when I am I prefer the killer be an upstanding member of the community and when possible a teetotaler. But seriously, Miller's iron plate body armor is always a great story, and one that can only be matched (outside of fiction) by Miller's 19th century contemporary the Aussie bushranger Ned Kelly. Awesome episode, my friend!

Talk about a bunch of murderous bushwhackers! Surprised that there hasn't been a movie made about this. One thing though is the number of times a shotgun was used in the murders. But I once saw a documentary about Billy the Kid where a professor of history said the biggest myth of the old west was it won with either the Colt .45 or the Winchester rifle. But he said it was the shotgun, it was suited for hunting small game to even some larger game, was the ideal defensive weapon in close quarters because you just pointed it and pulled the trigger, didn't have to have a really good aim. And he pointed the only fatality at the OK Corral was caused by shotgun blast. The part about the steel vest though made me wonder if Clint Eastwood didn't know about Miller's story and used that in the movie "For a Few Dollars More".

This really is a famous person and very well known so I know variants of this have been used in movies. I do think an actual movie on everyone in this family would be very interesting to watch. They could make up some because who knows what is the truth on these men. That historian is right on the shotgun. Many of the stagecoach drivers had them. They are a great protection up close but not at all far away. That makes them ideal in the streets too. You do not have to be a Crack shot either. If you look at the post mortem photos of Outlaw Bill Doolin you will see a lot of holes in him. Many think he was shot a lot but it's really from a shotgun. Even when I go hog hunting with a bow I've carried a shotgun. It's good for hitting them if they charge and come close plus the noise scares them off. It's not the only tool needed in the old west but it very much played its own part. Thank you for watching!

Oldest son of oldest son of oldest son of Bill Miller, Brother of James Miller. Question: Does anyone know where Bill Miller is Buried? The last time my Grand Father Robert Lee Miller saw him he was seven years old and his dad Bill Miller had been shot and was on a pond bank near his house, he told his son to go back to the house. That would have been around 1905. Grand pa Robert Lee Miller looked for his grave after his wife passed away, but never found it, Robert passed away in 1990.

People say we have a lot of serial killers today, but I disagree. Serial killers made up the Wild West, it’s almost like the term ‘outlaw’ should be another word for serial killer. Killers were free to kill in vast lawless lands with little to no consequences. A breeding ground for serial killers. I think it’s interesting how some people ‘look up’ to these old outlaws.

Good presentation. Most is true. But people continually repeat the story about him possibly killing his grandparents when he was a kid, a rumor probably started by some author trying to make his story sound more salacious, is complete B.S. It never happened. They were alive until he was a grown man. I’m not defending him for his actions, but as his great great grandson, I know that story is a lie. He was a crook, kinda like a mob hit man, but he wasn’t a crazed serial killer. And believe it or not, he was quite the family man.

Yeah, it does seem a bit odd that if he killed his mother's parents that she would simply move with him to somewhere else. She would have had to have known that he did it, and I suspect, would have been quite frightened of him.
