I didn't enjoy this episode much. I liked Brenda covering Heather up with the robe & telling her Joe was unavailable. And I liked Ida spying on Joe & Heather and later setting Rhoda up to have a 1-on-1 talk with Heather. But the rest of the episode wasn't that entertaining. Early in the show, I especially didn't like Rhoda practically begging Joe to reassure her that he loves her. I think that Rhoda needed counseling badly. I'm a woman but even I can imagine her constant need of reassurance of Joe's love and interest to probably be annoying and exhausting to him over time. Her insecurity was so bad that she even had to ask Heather if she's beautiful! I mean, seriously? The woman disrespects you in your own house with your husband in front of your face but you later ask her if she thinks you're beautiful?! That's crazy!
@vintagehippie36476 жыл бұрын
Yolanda Grady I feel the same regarding Rhoda's constant need of reassuring from Joe. What man (or women) wants to be in a relationship that requires high maintenance of trust, self confidence. There is nothing sexy about neediness. Love Valerie and the show but I wish they had written her better, especially during the era of the show and time when women were coming into their own. Also, Valerie Harper was a gorgeous women, actually much more beautiful than "Heather." That is what makes her insecurities difficult to believe.

sarahspeaks144 the show was on for 3 yr more years so I don’t think so. If you don’t know anything about the Jewish culture you don’t get the humour. This was typical of Rhoda’s character right back to the days of MTM.
@josephjoel91994 жыл бұрын
Yolanda, I respect your point, and I think that it is a valid one or else you would not be getting so many responses. I, too, think that Rhoda's insecurity hurt her marriage. As a man I think that I would not only be annoyed but also resentful of a mate being that insecure. It is not healthy and it is frustrating. Then again, insecurity defined the character. When you are a Jewish woman who was 60 pounds overweight with a high-pressure mother, I do not think that you ever forget it, and the insecurity lingers for a very long time. Regarding the quality of this episode, I think that this one is one of the better ones. It is brilliantly written and says a lot. My favorite scene is the one in which Brenda and Rhoda tell Ida to "stay there." Those three women were magic.
@keishasmith3793 жыл бұрын
This one reason why women need to have more confidence in themselves. Rhoda should have said something immediately. And joe should have had more respect for his wife. It makes no sense for rhoda to be constantly worried about other women. Thats usually a turn off for men.

That was who her character was though. Sadly. But that was part of who she was. I am just 2 minutes 15 seconds into this episode, and I have noticed an underling dark tone to the acting here. Up until this point into the production of "RHODA" here, most of the previous episodes have been directed by ROBERT MOORE. And why, you may well ask, might this be so important ? Have you ever lived and worked well with the same people, day in and day out, spread over a long period of time, and they became your "family" to you, your "family" away from your own home, and then suddenly they were gone, and never to return? If my suspicions prove to be correct, the cast here are just getting used to either a New Director ( from this episode: the Director here is Howard Storm ) or indeed a whole slew of new Directors, tried one after the other to make the "RHODA" Series succeed. For if my suspicions prove to be correct, and we do not see ROBERT MOORE'S name as Director, once again, at the beginning of any of the remaining episodes of "RHODA", it would have been at this point in the production of "RHODA" that ROBERT MOORE'S health would have been in sharp decline, due to AIDS related complications, and he was taken from us at the age of 54 on May 10th 1984 of AIDS-related pneumonia. Just look at this Episode Title here, which is "Somebody Down There Likes Him". Try to be compassionate, for I believe most productions that ROBERT MOORE was involved with, in his lifetime, tended to show care and compassion in the characters he played, or produced or directed, he somehow knew how to direct and get the "Very Best" from each of his actors. Have you ALSO noticed One Other thing? All of these FILMED EPISODES were in front of a "LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE" at each of these episodes, which is no small feat, IF you consider all the Talent in front and behind the camera...

Ugh. i cant stand Joe. Here he went out with his ex and wasnt planning on telling Rhoda.. then spins it around and gaslights Rhoda by saying how insecure she is without even giving her a chance to respond ro anything. Which she never responded to it really. But Joe still goes on about it for several minutes I"m sotry but any wife would be annoyed with a hubby who goes to lunch with his ex secretly ..then doesnt cop to rhat it was uncool not to let the wife know ahead of time or even that he went at all.for that matter..As if the wife isnt allowed to say anything without being called insecure. All this to cover his guilt for being devious Rhoda doesnt see how badly she was just treated here. Then he brings it up again and gaslights her some more. Throws her issues in her face when its convienant for him to use as a weapan. Then she smacks her on the butt in front of her sister and implies hes got good roomate because hes having sex with Rhoda. I cant stand his curly hair and his look.with the tight clothing. errrrr Yeah when Joe is in the main storyline he is always a bummer. Joes the problem He has no backbone unless hes angry.. How bout when he dumps Rhoda and tells her shes dull. omg. this guy is the dull one.Never took her out anyplace.and wanted to stay in after they just got married .He had no fun friends .no hobbies . just one guy thay was a jerk The actor does a great job.. i heard he wasnt thrilled with the direction of the charactor. for some reason the writers seemed to make most of the men on the show not with the best qualities Lol

People also forget how different relationships between men and women were many decades ago. Things that didn't seem bad at the time might be looked at much differently now. There are certainly worse husbands than Joe. But I think you are condemning him a bit unfairly. I mean, you hate his curly hair? Well, that's the type of hair he had. And his clothing was probably typical for that time. Men wore tighter clothing then than they do now. But if you look at how most men treated wives decades ago, from the vantage point of now, and how much has changed, they would probably all look like bad husbands. And maybe that's why it's good that a lot of things have changed. Actually, I would assume that the way Joe and Rhoda acted towards each other was much more progressive than the way husbands and wives acted toward each other only 10 or 20 years prior to that (Ricky and Lucy, for instance... or esp. Ralph and Alice). And things have progressed much more since 1975.

She barks at him for seeing his ex wife in which he shares a kid with. She just likes bitching. Joe didn’t want be married but Rhoda gave him an ultimatum which makes her manipulative. As far as looks go, everyone wanted him but you. Sounds like you have been watching too much daytime tv and eating bonbons
