My parents had a new stereo as that, during my teens, in the late 1970s, but theirs worked instantly, it just had to be plugged in. Nothing complicated. The receiver had an 8 track player and radio; the record player was a seperate mechanism. All of it played from two speakers. It had a good sound. Mom still has it, and it all still plays.

That's interesting. When I was 14 my parents gave me their old Hallicrafters multiband radio that they'd had since the '40s. I used to listen to short-wave broadcasts on it from all over the world. But that's probably not interesting. Also we had a coal furnace. The truck used to come by every month in the winter and dump coal into the cellar through the window. But that's probably not interesting.
