My father had the Tri-ang Double Ended Engine when I was a kid. Found one at a garage sale recently. I didn't know there were matching carriages. Now I will have to search some out.

Love the thumbnail photo inspired by the 1959 Catalogue cover. The TC train looked so wonderful running through the Tri-ang station with it's brightly coloured buildings. The coaches are in incredible condition, better than any I have seen. Very enjoyable to see them all racing past. Such a handsome beast of a locomotive. 😊

Really enjoyable view. My dad met me after school, either April 59 or 60, off to local stockist purchased R159, I could have had the coaches as well, but just wanted the loco. It had mk3 couplings and Tri-ang Railways on the side. The only issue was it would not run on standard track curves. My Dad, bless him, went out and bought series 3 track, which was a lot cheaper than standard. Loved hearing the loco running round brought back so many memories. Many thanks.

Hi Oscar ,, I have 3 of these double ended locomotive ,, and a forth with pantograph i bought in the day for 25 bucks new ,,, certainly some of my favorites ,, in canada ,, often railroads run trains in a push pull arrangement ,, which i ran on my railway ,, true collectables ,, again ,, love the vids ,,, i have both sets of coaches too , the first set ,, and the newer budd cars , think i have every set you budd cars expect the two tone green cars , next on my bucket list , flying scotsman never got smoke ,, all the best

My 1970s Flying Soctsman had the "Chuff Chuff" sound, and it had the firebox glow as well. Saldy I don't have it any more 😢, nor do I haave my GWR 0-6-0 PT loco. The GWR 0-6-0pt was part of a set, that I got for Christmas, again early/mid 1970s, it was the pick up goods set, 5 wagons + brake van, tunnel, set of junction signals, small station, kit form goods shed, point, uncoupling ramp, and a buffer stop. Gave many happy years of enjoyment, with FS being the next loco, and many other models for Christmas over the years. I like your videos, as I get reminded of some of the items that I had, also some or the items a friend had on his layout,.. Happer times! Thanks for making these videos.

Another great video thanks Oscar. I dont think theres ever been a time where the Flying Scotsman has ever been out of the catalogue. Its been available in one form or another since its introduction. I very much like the blue and yellow TC sets. I have done since I first saw one as a small child, but for one reason or another have never owned one. Perhaps its time to do so and convert it to run on my 3 rail layout. 🤔

Although Triang never called the R.159 a Victoria Railways B class nor the coaches the Spirit of Progress train coaches, most young owners in Australia imagined they were that. A video of what the B class and Spirit of Progress train looked like in the fifties and sixties : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bqd-lsyDttGuYo0.htmlsi=O5R_ms8tgA1JRpO_ No Dome cars or corrugated sides and a six axle locomotive as well. Harder to see the end observation car in this, but was a version with a rounded end but and end door and windows in line with the others but in the curved end. There was also a precedent of these B class running alongside the Flying Scotsman on its visit to Victoria in 1988/89. However the videos of parallel running on the adjacent broad and standard gauge tracks concentrated on the VR preserved steam locomotives running alonside. A very popular pair of models in Australia by not only Triang but others too.

I used to like these diesels as a kid, i thought they were supposed to be American or Canadian. Well I move to Aus in the 1970s and the double ended diesels are based on the Victorian B class diesels and the colour scheme is roughly similar, thr coaches are of similar Victorian Railways livery although they never have vista dome cars etc. They were broad gauge locos of 5ft 3 in like Ireland and 1500hp each from 1952 53 and s9me ate still running today Here is a video of one coupled to a Victorian single ended S class kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9R4mNZ8pt7SoIE.htmlsi=Tv1yTvjt74szOpZv

Hi Oscar . The Flying Scotsman never got smoke . It did have the firebox glow in the early 70s . I think it stopped in 73 . It had the dreaded chuff chuff sound! I think the last time what we would recognise as the original model appeared in the catalogue was 1980 when it got paint finish . From 1981 it was replaced by the new tender drive A1 Flying Scotsman . Nice running , love the sound of the double ended diesel charging round. That Scotsman is a rocket !

Hi Oscar, I remember the VR version first appearing in the Australian supplement of the Hornby catalogue sometime in the mid 70's. It's worth a look at Steven Rowe's link in his comment below/above for the VR prototype at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne to get an idea of how similar it was even though it was a generic model. Back in those days, off the shelf models of Australian prototypes were few and far between in Tasmania where I grew up so it was a revelation. Later in my life I hired a corporate excursion train out of Melbourne with the single ended S class diesel up front and got to ride in the cab. Your model might be noisy but the real thing was pretty loud as well.

Hi Oscar, Great video and opening still of the TC diesel. Always good to see two running in shot. TC coaches look to be in lovely condition, very nice. A high level of TLC is always needed with old track and that extra screw in the point seems to have made a difference. Now torn between going to the layout for a play or getting on with daily chores 🤔😀, no brainer 🙄😂

A good overall video this morning Oscar, while I have said before that the transcontinental stuff isn’t really of much interest to me this whole set you had running round the layout did look quite good running round the layout, as some others have pointed out in the comments it is sort of ok to have Flying Scotsman running round while also having something transcontinental because there are photos and videos of scotsman in America and Australia that show it sat next to or running beside an American or Australian locomotive, keep up the great work Oscar.

Another interesting video Oscar. The TC loco runs very well considering its limited electrical pickup on just the drive bogie. It was great to see the Flying Scotsman charging around, seems quite a fitting tribute to the real locomotive as she is now destine to sit in the museum now her maintenance contract has expired.

The shape of the Victorian Railways Spirit of Progress rounded end observation car can be seen in the rare opening segment of this short vid : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9Fpq5uirZ_QeZc.htmlsi=0aYktd_DD2T-4y0D But in steam hauled days just before the B class double ended diesels were delivered to replace the three cylinder S class streamlined Pacifics. Hornby did make a pilot model of the S class Pacific but it did not make it into production. Later in the film is the only colour footage i have seen of the VR three cylinder 4-8-4 H class locomotive Heavy Harry. In a top Melbourne model shop i remember a customer brought in a model of H 220 he made using two Princess models as a starting point. A very impressive model resulted.

Sure you can run the trans-continental and the Flying Scotsman. The Flying Scotsman visited America and Australia, so it's probably prototypical. Also, it's your layout, so you can run what ever you want.

Hi Oscar, I have never been a fan of this first set of TC coaches; lots of Triang "artistic licence" going on here. The bogies are oversized for the bodies, they look like they have been dreamed up by someone sitting at a drawing board. The tail dome car I think is based on an obs car used on the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha. This also misses the mark. If the vertical line where the canopy butts onto the body was more of an angle leaning forward (along with the molded framework on the canopy), it would be more effective. It's a pity because the bodies are not bad. I have a silver and red set which I did some alterations to substituting the bogies with those used on the freightliner flat wagons. The balance in size I found more pleasing. The second generation coaches are far more convincing. Triang Hornby's Flying Scotsman is one of my favourites in the range. It is a well balanced beautiful looking model. I think the company managed to get it spot on, in fact it hasn't changed much down the years since it's introduction. It works very well with the later Gresley Teaks. Great pulling power. Great insightful video...as usual. Thank you.

Hi Oscar, Would I be right in assuming these coaches had "fixed" or glued on roof pieces? I don''t think that seating units were available yet or until after the tension lock couplings became standard? These are a beautiful set of coaches with very clean windows, that is a bit of a rarity for coaches of that era? I'll bet it took a while to remove and clean all of those wheels.. Well done.. I'm sure they are running better now? The Flying Scotsman seems like a nice model? I have never owned one of those.I concentrated on the Princess and R 59 Tanks.. Great video as usual.. Thank you..

Hi Oscar, your video brought back happy memories of going with my Dad to buy the Flying Scotsman set from a second hand shop in the early 80s. My version had the cardboard box with the lovely illustration on and had the steam sound chuff chuff tender, it came with two teak coaches and an oval of early system six track. It is entirely appropriate to run the TC train alongside the Scotsman as others have said the Scotsman's saviour, Alan Peglar, took it on a tour of America and Australia in the late 60s/early 70s.
