I wanted to share my observations on the Immacuclean solution. I’ve used it on several eras of paper at this point with varied results. One commonality is that it does do a good job at getting dirt off the covers. I use a 3.5% solution with cotton round followed by 1 wipe of Di-ionized water, let it dry by hanging off a ledge (usually I am only needing to clean back covers as fronts I do manually). Then a second wipe with DI water and a second dry before Pressing. 10 Silver age Tales of Suspense (1967) issues lost some cover luster. They still look good but comparing to identical issues I dry cleaned, you can see a loss of gloss. Also, there is a change in the way the page feels - just slightly rougher or drier similar to running your finger along a piece of chalk. Bronze age issues came out great. I did a half dozen DC’s from 1971 then blew through 12 issues from 1977 in no time and they all came out looking great. No change in luster or feel. However, 2 Tomb of Dracula Evel Kneivel covers (issues 16 and 17) had different results. One was still glossy, the other slightly less so, like the 60’s issues mentioned above. I tried it on a 2013 Avengers mostly white cover and interestingly enough it ended up similar to the 1967 issues with a nice white color but a loss in gloss and tactile feel. Almost like the Alkalinity changed? Anyway, I gotta give the thumbs up for the most part. As is often said “Practice on junk books!” Just sometimes hard to find old junk books to practice on! And once again a shout out for the chamfered boards. They are awesome on every era I’ve tried them on. Thanks!

This is such good info Johnny, thank you so much. Silver age books are sometime impervious to harm and look great and other times lose gloss and other times lose color. I just cleaned three copies of Avengers #8 and they each had different effects. Similar to your experiences. Bronze age books largely behave about the same so I suspect it may be age-related, but I really dont know. Tha chamfered boards have been a boon for the industry. I just wish I didnt have to make 3-4 to get one good one!

You may profit from you need a lot more learning and practice time. ImmacuClean can remove some ink but its relatively rate a more pronounced on specific books. ImmacuClean can enhance the gloss on a book or detract from the reflectivity depending on how you perform your cleaning and your pressing, combined with the amount of kaolite used in the ink and paper of any particular books. Just as many examples of enhancing gloss can be reported as those detracting from gloss and a significant factor is how it is cleaned and pressed. a parametric factor is the book itself, and another factor is the immacuclean itself, naturally. Its a complex system and just stating the any one factor is what led to that particular response is nearly impossible. Keep practicing and see if you agree with me. Also, have fun!

I will do some experiment to See if I can determine the difference. I may makes a different immacuclean for modern books or at a minimum only recommend the current immacuclean for copper or older books. I suspect the different is whether or. Rick, per your written instructions "When first learning, it is recommended to use one bottle per 1000ml (35g/l or 3.5%). In a 200ml bottle use 7-10ml of ImmacuClean Concentrate tp 190-193ml of water and mix well." Read it yesterday and made my mix. Just saw this video and you mention 3ml to 190. Which is right? Thanks much!
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny, all are right. The concentration can vary a little, use less for lighter work. Use more for more nasty stains. You will have a great chance of streaks that you have to remove later with water with more concentrated solutions and less won't clean quite as well. 3ml to 190 is the low end of the concentration range and 10 ml is the very highest end. I know its confusing and I apologize for that and will try to simplify the instructions to accommodate.

Can you pretty much go right into the press after cleaning or should you allow the book to air dry for a period of time?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
The answer is an unsatisfying "it depends" so I usually recommend to wait until about 5 minutes after it is dry to the touch. Where I live with my ambient temperature and pressure and the amount of solution I use, that time is typically around 20 minutes.

@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony, sure that would be fine. But so far as the covers are concerned there is unlikely to be much benefit. The covers won’t absorb any more water than they do when they are completely wiped with the stuff. However the interior pages may benefit.

Hey Rick, do you ever see ink completely come off with just distilled water. 99% of time i have no damage from wet cleaning but every once in while the ink comes right off leaving a streak of missing ink. This tends to happen mostly on silver age books. I wonder if some previous activity may have destabilized the ink or something. I’d love to send you some photos of examples.

Once I open the Immacuclean does my 1 year time to use start? If I refrigerate how long will the source liquid last. Also how long can the mix with water last in that pump bottle at room temp or refrigerated?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
The duration it lasts is not quite as precise as that. The factors are exposure to oxygen, temp, and microbes. It is biodegradable so it starts biodegrading when you dilute it and expose it to oxygen. I don’t have the answers to your questions for your specific humidity , microbes, oxygen content etc. but it’s usually at least a year until it starts going bad and more like 3 years. I say a year because the first indication that there’s less material than I stated with at my location with an occasionally opened bottle at ambient temperature. I hope that helps.

So from what I got out of the video was 3ml of IC and 190ml of water to produce a regular solution to use. I personally was unsure of the mixture from the instructions provided in the kit. If I missed that particular time bit in the instructions I received with my kit, my apologies. @@ImmaculateComics Well, just to be really nitty, it's actually 3ml of IC mixed with 187ml of DI to produce 190ml of cleaning solution, right? But as you showed, you don't have to calculate the amount of water, just dilute the IC in a moderate amount of DI, then top off to 190ml and shake once more. BTW, where can one obtain DI, and why is it better than distilled? Thanks!

Do you use erasers on the book before you use the solution to clean it?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
Typically I don't use erasers at all. But if I do its usually after I wet clean the book, which may prompt me to wet clean it a second time. Erasers do a great job at removing some soils, but others (oily stain like fingerprints) it can rub further into the paper fibers themselves and make it actually harder to clean.

If that does not work I move up the scale - Immacuclean then low peroxide. As noted, don't over soak the paper - you can repeat if needed, and let the paper dry to the touch before trying the next thing.
