In this episode of our off grid cabin build series, we will see the results of our own DIY water well drilling. Our friend has his own well drilling rig to drill our shallow wells so we drilled a well. We only drilled down 18 feet and hopefully hit water. Today we see how much water we got.

Please use these steps : first put the big stones first and then the small ones then mix them then put them in the pipe and wait for 48 hours then empty it from water then wait for another 48 hours and then you have a clear water, this is the Arabic way.

I know this video is old but as a geologist I would suggest several things. I'm not sure about the holes on the filter at the bottom but several feet of sand to help filter out the fines. The fines will clear up over time the more you pump from the well. You could also put the smaller PVC all the way on the bottom to remove the silt on the bottom. You need to make sure you get the full depth out of the well. The fines are small enough that it shouldn't clog with frequent agitation. You also stated you waiting to add gravel, I know it's a cost but next time add sand and gravel immediately before any collapse. I may have missed this, but how did you pick the location of the well? Could you install multiple wells and use in a rotation if more water is warranted? I have a few more suggesting but many others have touch on most of them. Good luck and thanks for the video.

I salute you for your efforts, but an agricultural pump with a diameter of two inches must be used to draw silt from the well until pure and clear water comes out to melt in it and there is no sand. Hello I am currently drilling my own water well. I made my own rotary mud rig and I am currently 35' down. I'm trying to get to 100' down. I will be putting some videos up soon. I'm currently having a problem with my drilling fluid getting full of fine silt. I need to come up with some kind of shaker table or screen to filter it out of my drilling fluid. I went to a week long class in Texas and we learned how to drill a well. it was worth the $400.00. That also included my own private hotel room and breakfast lunch and dinner. It was worth it and I would recommend it. Living waters.

Take your electric pump and feed a extra long hose down your welll under pressure. You will flush the silt out and actually make the welll deeper as well. In doing so you will help open up the area at the bottom of the well to promote water flow

You have to drill till you hit sand ( DO NOT POUR CREEK WATER DOWN THERE EVER ) Pour your gravel AS SOON AS YOU STOP DRILLING AND PACK IT with a packing bar it wont work if you just pour it down Use a 2x3 if nothing else to pack it then pour concrete down on the outside 3 ft when it runs clear I put a 1/8 cup of bleach down my well let it sit and then pumped it for an hr ,, try jetting it to remove the silt Where did you buy the Drilling rig ?? thanks love your channel

Go with a solar pump and pump to a tank on a tower. The key is to pump a little water over a long period of time to allow fot it to refresh. When you plumb up the upper tank, plan for mud on the bottom. And yes you should have put a silt filter on the bottom. Also, pour some gravel in the hole before you put in the well casing, and add an outer casing to stop ground level contamination..

I am a experienced well driller been doing for many years and i see alot of lacking in basic well knowledge. First though kudos in finding water at 18 feet. Plus 4 gal. An hour at that depth isnt bad at all. The silt will clear over time as it takes time with low volume to wash and clean the walls of the well and the mud forced into the aquifer by the drilling process. The only problem is this will never be potable water this is a surface seep. For farm use and bathroom use it is fine. But to get potable water you can consume without boiling you must have a aquifer that is below the bedrock level. The depth of bedrock can vary alot from any given place but generally it is the first hard rock formation encountered that is at least 5 feet in thickness to drill through. You set your casing pipe on that bedrock then any water below that should be good potable water unless it is laced with minerals that may need testing. That all said some states and or counties will alow you to drill your own well but you still have to purchase a permit and follow all the guidelines for drilling a well. The good thing the machine you used to drill with is perfectly capable of drilling a 200 foot well. Judging your terrain from the video i would guess that would be deep enough to get potable water but honestly i don't know your area. My well here in WV is only 105 feet some places in the southwest can go as deep as 600 feet so it varies. Please feel free to ask me questions i will try to answer to best of my knowledge. Remember i am not familiar with formation depths for your area. But for well construction i can answer most.

ID mandates an 8" and 6" casing with grout between maybe the full depth(not sure) but much more than the 20' grout around a 6" in Colorado. I have one property that has a 720' well with 1.8 gpm. We have to have a 1200 gal tank.

@@ModernMountainLiving in our state of WV it depends on geology. But in most cases generally we only have to grout a 6" casing down to bedrock and a 4 inch liner to the bottom. Anything below the bedrock isnt considered surface and there for no surface contamination gets past grouted casing. But states are different so is geology. But you can use surface water but they are strict rules it cant be near your potable source. It can be used in a bathroom setting for bathing and toilet even laundry and of course for farm use. This is good to do when a potable source is limited. Where i live if you drilled 720' you would have salt water and oil.

@@clydesmith299 it would help from sand being pulled up through the system but its far better for the well to pump out as much sand and silt as possible. By getting it out will help to open the seep for better water flow and increase the static volume of water the well will hold.

@@kenjett2434 I could use the oil money! We have 7400' till salt water. The neighbors fracked their 600'+ well and it didn't change much, total granite. My understanding is that in the southern part of the state the AG land has a lot of surface water contamination so the state mandated the excessive double casing and grout statewide.

In my experience couplings, joints and any other PVC joints should be twisted when being glued and held tightly together as the glue sets because the connections will try to push apart initially. Otherwise you risk a leak. Also 4 full turns of Teflon tape on threaded joints are sufficient for a leak proof joint. Just my 2-bits for what they’re worth.

As a petroleum engineer who also drills water wells at our farm, here are some things to do: 1- Drill deeper to reach aquifer water rather than surface run off. 2- Utilize a multi-casing system ( for your case that would be a larger surface casing which should be run below the silt level to isolate the silty layer from contaminating your aquifer water. That casing should be cemented from top of the annulus properly. And then your producing casing should be run through the larger surface casing with gravel in between the two casings. 3- Once you run your producing casing to the aquifer make sure to have multiple large perforations in it, then pour a couple pounds of gravel in it to filter the water and act as a simple gravel pack that will prevent any sand and silt from coming in (bridging effect). ( I usually create around 30-40 1/2 inch holes starting 2 ft from the bottom of the production casing with a cap) 4- use a simple wooden bracket or base to support the pump since movement in the casing while pumping will affect the casing stability and push more silt in. (A side note : use calculations in the future to remove any guess work from the process, such as the volume of cement or gravel to fill the annular volume) Best Regards and good luck👌🏻

Everybody ought to have a well with a hand pump just in case of permanent power failure. And also solar panels for power and living on the grid.

You asked for suggestions about wells. My suggestion is when drilling a well dig it about ten to twelve feet deeper than the depth you are at now. Then put the longer casing in well, and add about a foot of sand and then a layer of six to eight inches worth of pea gravel. Then repeat this until sand and pea gravel is above your slits in your casing. You want to end with pea gravel. Then drop in your well pipe with a foot valve. This basically creates a sand filter. I have also seen people drill out a well then put their casing in and pull it back up about three feet and have someone with an Explosives use license blast the bottom out to make a large opening at the bottom allowing more water to collect around the casing and making well refill time faster. But you still do the filter technique for cleaner water. Oh, and the reason the primer is purple is for an indicator for plumbers to see where they primed. It helps them not to make the mistake of gluing and putting together fittings that have not been primed. The primer is a cleaner and a chemical that helps to create a bond between the two pieces that are glued.

I used to work with a well company and your perforations on the casing need to go long wise with the pipe you went width wise long wise about 10 inches long you will get a tremendous amount of water

36 wraps total for both ends in case you were wondering... 17 wraps for the check valve, then 19 on the pump side.

I agree with you Martin, 4 gallons an hour is not enough. I was hoping some of the silt was from the pea gravel, but after 20 gallons? Just for the sake of science (and fun), fill a mason jar to the top with your water and let it sit still over night. You'll be able to see if or how much it will clear up by just being still.

I have a 30 foot hand dug well on my property that has been used for almost 100 years. It keep about 18 feet of standing water and is 48" in diameter from about 6 foot down to the bottom. It's 36" diameter and ground level and is bricked down about 6 feet.

After you dig with the auger and hit mush, drive a wellpoint down the center to get deeper. The wellpoint will have a better screen on it and filter out the chocolate milk better.

try putting a sand point onto 1 1/4 drive pump pipe and go deeper using existing casing until you get to the aquafer

The more silt that you pump out of the well will build a bigger cavity. Lower the inner pipe and pump more silt. The bigger the cavity the more water in volume that you will have. Also as you pump allow the water to settle in the bucket and return it to the well so that you will have more volume to pump silt out

Get a 500 gal aux. tank and hoist it higher than your cabin.Will serve to stockplie the water and help with water pressure.

Make a stick or open pole building to cover your fire wood. Give it a metal roof with gutters. Get food grade barrels of 50 gallons or more and collect rain water and keep your wood dry. Rainy season should be starting soon.

I really admire and enjoy your video as I have experienced your water in very similar circumstances. Our cabin is on an island in northern BC just 50 miles south of Alaska. I hand dug our well to 20 feet with 6" casing and ran a sandpoint at the bottom and we have never run out of water even with 10 people (kids and grandkids) and the water has been tested as being perfectly potable. Not to wax on about our sucess I can only tell you it is mostly good luck. But here are some thoughts and suggestions you might consider. First of all I asked our neighbors what they had for wells, water supply and how deep they went. To me this is the starting point because if they were 100 feet plus there would have been no option but get a professional drilling contractor. From as close as 1000 away to 1/4 mile they both indicated approx. 20 feet deep. We are very lucky because all we have is sand all the way which makes for easy digging and nicely filtered water. We dug it using a post hole digger. When we first produced water it was murky but after prodicing water it cleared up. Also the output of the well increased as the "veins" opened up. The other comments on your video all suggest going deeper which may be the case but get some neighbor information to know what you are dealing with. Also a lot of people think you need a bigger well bore. I don't think that will help at all because to create a "bottom hole" cistern won't do anything, you just have to get to a water table and there is one because you have clay to keep the water from draining deeper and your do have water. I think you have a lot going for you and i would produce it constantly to see if it clears up and the formation will vein to increase the flow; you have an 8' water table which is more than anyone could wish for. All you've got to do is work it to give it up. Give it time and I think it will serve you well. I keep thinking of the 8' of water you had when you first tested it. Good luck.

pro tip: really only need to wrap tape 1 1/4 the way around the threads. So not even 2 full rotations. wraping more than 2x around can actually be a bad thing for the seal long term.

Should be using a sand filter pack instead of gravel. People often go with gravel only to find they are getting fine sediments from the formation. Sand is much easier to pour as well, especially with such a small annular space. With as fine of silt you drilled through have, I wouldn't be surprised if that well produced fine sediments in your water for years.

Extend the pipe further into the existing casing. In other words, move further down into the water table. I realize that the is muck there, but it's fine and you can pump it out. Over time the dirty water will start to clear up. Good luck to you!

when you glue pvc remember to hold the fitting all the way seated down for at leat 30 seconds to be safe because if you don't, the fitting can get pushed right back off the pipe by the glued joint. and use pipe dope on top of three wraps of teflon tape (wound the right direction) on male pipe threads, professional plumbers do this.

Use a 2 foot messed point that will allow for a bigger exposure to the water. The mesh comes in different grades, fine for the sand you are into.

This is a case of when life hands you lemons make Margaritas. Fill many buckets with muddy water let the clay settle out drain off the water. The left over is called slip ceramics pour this into molds to make stuff. Sell it to hobby shops.

Late post since I’m a late bloomer. Use a geyser pump to clean out your well. Then use it to fill a tank above the ground. Solar panels or to use pressure pump to the house or garden

seal the top of the well around he pump so that when you pump water it pulls in more water from the bottom of the well.

Remember that a pump running to produce 2gph into a holding tank will produce 48 gallons per day, whether you use it or not, day or night. I was told that even a deep well in desert areas can generally provide that. If it goes into a 2500 gallon holding tank then it settles and you'd never use all that is available. Just a thought! Just a note for future reference: teflon thread tape is only to help the male threads receive the female threads, to slide past each other as the two thread sets are commected. The tape does not seal the threads, thus one or two wraps is all that are necessary not six or eight which can scrunch up and prevent the two pieces from fully connecting. I enjoyed watching y'all work together. Lotta' work.

Lengthwise slits, charcoal filling before you add gravel, inside the well liner also use a base of gravel with layer of charcoal and another layer of gravel, then if you can use so filter material like the landscaping fabric you mentioned.... and lastly, seal off the space around the top of the well liner and the hole the well liner sits in to create a vacuum so the well pulls water from the surrounding area!

4 gal/hr is 96 gal/day which is more than the needs of a family of 4. You should expect better flow rates as you progress into wetter seasons too. To clean out your well you can use a compressor to pump air down a 3/8" hose inside a 1" pvc pipe to the bottom of the well. You want the air to exit about 6" from the bottom of the 1" pipe so the rising and expanding air will draw silt with it. It works like a coffee percolator. This will also create a cavity at the bottom of the well and can increase its water reserve. To get the maximum water extraction with a small electric pump you can rig a float switch that runs the pump at the high water set point and shuts off the pump at a low water set point.

I realise I'm a little late to the party, but unless you know you have a spring near there, the first aquifer won't appear until after you drill through some fairly hard clay. In sothern ohio, that's around 8 and a half feet down from ground level to the start of constant, clean ish water. Other places, that's around 30 to forty feet, just depends. The water you're getting from there is just surface water really. If your dog pees in the yard or a rabbit craps, it will end up in that water.

Pool filter sand poured around your casing and pickup pipe would take care of the silt problem. Rocks just let it through. Everything down there is thin enough to pass through the rocks.

You can build a jet with a air compressor that will serve as a vacuum to get the silt out, its a technique I used to use all the time when I worked on wells

considering the us stocks both imperial and metric fittings and piping and then labels metric fittings as the closest imperial size i'd be whacking enough teflon unless i've measured it with calipers

"Well', (pun intended), considering your investment, 5 gals per hour from a 4" casing down 18ft is FAR better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. FREE water is just that. Good enough to handle your garden and livestock needs. I certainly wouldn't abandon it. Heck, I'D put in a dozen of them for that price/effort. Your gardens and livestock won't be bothered by the settled clay/silt. Flow MAY get better with precipitation. I say. "WELL done". (another shameless pun)....All that said, you'll just have to 'bite the bullet' and drill down to a clear aquafer for 'domestic' use. JMHO's. Best of success and God Bless...~Eli.

I always keep two of the same electric well pumps. One on the well, and the other on standby to replace the first. When one goes bad.... and they all do eventually, I take it to the pump shop and they rebuild it. So I always have a standby. This has come in handy more than 3 times. I think that the spot was probably fine, you just need to go deeper. I know you just said other than deeper. I think I would go with deeper with your little rig and go as far as you can then call it a day. It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission..... and how are they going to know. Jim in Chile

first thing you needed to do is check county records for well depths in your area. You should go deeper one for better water supply and to shallow wellss can get contaminated easy. 50 feet would be the shallowest i would drill a well. You should also seal around the pipe with bentonite clay. I live in area where the water is potable at 6 ft. down. and there is one well in my area that is only 50 feet and produces 150 gallons per min.

Reverse circulate the well. Get an electric 2” trash pump, 1000 gallon tank for water and a generator to run the pump. Take the one way valve off the bottom of the pvc, run the pipe all the way to the bottom of your casing, tie into the PVC on surface with the hose connected to the electric water pump connected to the 1000 Gallon water tank. Pump fresh water down the pipe and push all the muddy water out till clean water surfaces, shut down for 1 hour and repeat the process till the well is producing clean water. This will super charge the water formation and speed up the process of removing sediment.

The reason they make pvc primer that is purple (they also make it in clear) is so that it is easily noticed if any of the area to be glued has not been missed to help ensure a better seal.

Its also so the inspectors can easily see it. Big Plumbing forum did an extensive test and found that even when properly applied, across 7-8 of the main pvc solvents, the joints that were primered all broke about 20% low pressure/stress.

A backhoe can dig down about 15 feet. You can install round concrete casings for storage. Seal the seam of all casings after the first with grout.. You want water to seep in as deep as possible.

I have a well like that, I keep a 55 gallon drum that I pump into often to have a resovoir on hand, I pump about 5 gallons at a time, then let the well re charge and repeat, when I need water I get it out of the drum

The science of wells is as simple as poke a hole into the earth of a sufficient depth to tap into an aquifer. If I’m seeing what I think I’m seeing, your property is on top of the hill. That, combined with your 18 ft depth restriction, makes me skeptical that you will have much success with the do-it-yourself approach. You could keep trying one thing after another but if you want a water source that is safe and dependable, and located beside your cabin, just bite the bullet and have a professional well put in. Start by checking with your neighbors to see what an average drill depth is in your area. Not trying to rain on your parade, just giving an honest opinion.

Wells aren't simple. We have 300 rentals in rural TN and we have to ensure that water is safe. The guidelines required for my area are extensive and rigid. We've had our test samples rejected more than once which is frustrating because each test is 120 mile drive for us (60 x 2). There are multiple variables in my area that can cause potability issues. It's such a big issue, we're trying to sell all rentals that can't connect to city water lines. You just don't poke a hole in the ground and start drinking, especially at 20 feet.

You are 100% correct on the reason behind the coloring of the primer (purple) and glue (blue) Both come in clear if you make the effort to find it.

I grew up in a rural area in Wisconsin. we had 5 acres and a well. the well was 24 Ft deep with 18ft of water. It had a casing about 3 1/2ft diameter. There was a large stand-up cast-iron hand pump with the same foot valve set up in galvanized steel pipe. First thing my dad did was get a borrowed 1/2 HP electric shallow well pump and pumped all water out of it. Result was it pumped for 3 or 4 hrs and was empty. Shined a light down it and it looked nasty with silt like yours. this time waited until the next and put the discharge hose as deep as we could and recirculated the water to stir up all the silt and use a second borrowed pump 2 pump out the slurry. we've done this for the whole day or at least 8 to 10 hours and return the pumps and put the old cast-iron pump back on and let it sit for 2 days. that well has raised 9 children and the parents 4 30 some years. it took a couple of years living with the hand pump before the house got raided modeled and put a modern shallow well pump in with running water throughout the house. my dad said he done it to unplug the well and make a larger subterranean reservoir for the water to sit in. we tried to pump the well out again two years later when we got the electric pump. It ran for 12 hrs straight and we gave up that day after measuring the water LvL, out of 18 ft starting lvl it only wen down 6 1/2 ft. if you recirculate the water also I guarantee that well will perform much better in the water will clear up. and you know you can always have it tested for free through your local government. I believe you're going to be fine God put good water all over this world for us.

Just completed our backyard manual well today. The project started with the drilling company boring the well back in October. They ended up at 191 ft before they hit a good water source. It took six months to get the hand pump, but it was well worth the wait. Looking now to have the water tested for safety. If all is well, it will be a load off my mine knowing I have a source of water.

Is the end of the casing pipe open? If so, pour a little sand and then gravel into the casing pipe. Otherwise, silt will just keep coming up through that bottom opening.

I have seen a similar project. you can rest the pump on a square wooden block, with only the water pipe widht opening. now you can fasten the pump to the plank. the wooden plank is attached to the casing pipe by a shower grid fitting, which fits perfectly the casing pipe. now the pump will be more stable. the rest of the plank will rest on the bigger casing pipe. Once you get rid of the mud over time you should extend the pipe but not touching the bottom of the well. Simular like you did, let a rope down to determine how much water till the very bottom, but this is what you forgot, it is to tie a knot at the top as a guide. Then from the knot make another knot a few cm lower. this will be the length of the pipe. I think the amount of mud is determined by the sediment of the well and a big factor is the disturbance of the sediment. It goes away over time. A tight fit drilling which is near to the size of the casing pipe is the best, less disturbance. I see you have to wait for a few minutes for the well to fill up. That might be that your casing pipe is on the bottom of the well. Normally there is a flow channel/stream underground, your casing pipe might stop the water from entering the pipe, that is why you have to wait for the pipe to be filled. The water sucks into the pipe instead of flowing past the valve, that's why there is constant mud. Not sure if I make sense, but this is my theory.

dig 8 feet diameter and 18 feet deep , this will give you 1000+ gallons of water all the time , there is a restriction 18 ft deep but no restriction on diameter, mine is 6 feet diameter and 22 feet deep , there is enough water at all times and it replenish itself over night , as a matter of fact I tried to drain it and could not , it had fill back what I had pumped out the day before and I hadn't even got down half way , but you do what you think is best , this is only a suggestion

Jim Thomas, I agree. I had a back hole dig an 18 ft well with three foot diameter cement casing. Dowsing rods put me over a good source of water. Never ever ran out of water. The method he is using is inappropriet for the depth unless you hit an underground stream.

Put a heavy plastic bag over your pump when not in use, or a 5 gal pail weighted down. Birds love to light on the top of the pump and you know what birds do. Yuk!

I've heard that you can double your output by drilling reserve in the bottom of well four feet for every ten foot to drilled to the bottom of well. not sure except I drilled fourty in michigan, then added twenty from bottom of original drill. got all the water we could need.

Aside from doing what Red Poppy Ranch did, you might want to consider setting a permanent rain water catchment system, maybe with a large buried cistern or two. It rains so much there that you can use that instead. Put the cisterns high up on your property so that you can take advantage of gravity for your water pressure (look at Pure Living For Life's cistern/water system playlist). They only need to use power to fill the cisterns from their well, like once or twice a month and gravity gives them full water pressure. Combine that with rainwater and you might only need some of those 18 foot wells in spots to feed animals and such.

A to už vůbec nemluvím o jeho zvláštním způsobu demineralizace, kdy demineralizuje zbytečně všechnu vodu a to i tu, kterou používá k zalévání zahrady. Pure Living For Life je mist špatných řešení a mistr v jejich omlouvání. Někdy pochybuji, zda chce dům vůbec dostavět. Jo a je mistr světa v mluvení o banalitách. To vydrží fakt nejdéle. Obá, jak Red Poppy Ranch, tak Pure Living For Life mají daleko vydatnější zdroje vody. Martin Johanson prostě na pramen nenarazil a sbírá povrchovou zasáklou dešťovou vodu, což je špatně. To už je lepší sbírat dešťovou vodu přimo ze střechy nebo z postaveného sběrače. Bude jí víc a nebude kontaminovaná a blátivá.
