One of the subscribers to my Patreon channel posed an excellent question that has come up in other fencing circles before: "Isn't it better to have one perfectly trained parry rather than practicing multiple parries to answer the same attack." It is an excellent question and I decided to share the answer with the much broader fencing community.

In my opinion this is spot on. It's great to have that flawless move, but it's better to have other moves that are also well practiced. Just like any other sport, you need different techniques at your disposal to adapt to the situation at hand and not leave yourself open to predictable windows!

a video on how to make HEMA grow would be nice too. I agree with some people's complaints that it can be an expensive sport to get into: the protective gear + the blunt & rounded steel weaponry you need, etc. The video " The reason no-one respects HEMA " appeared recently on my feed I watched it: some of it is true but the video title is obviously pure click bait. The complaints of the video host are: "The hema school i was in was too stubbornly traditionalist, hema is way too biased to the old ways", but its weird because the hema im seeing is evolving past the treatises, you are proof of that. Maybe you could do a response vid.

It is certainly worth considering.

I like it. Big fan of you Robert. Down in the foam leagues it's a game of tracking and repositioning- which gives away what the parry will be. The aggressive party slowly moves to a place of advantage- you can't guard everywhere all at once. Fail to reposition at all, and the attacker will creep into a place where they can strike faster than you can block. So it becomes a game around committing momentum to the parry vs attack. The one who is able to commit last wins- Attacker switches to an undefended target, defender commits to the correct parry location. The difference is interesting? Foam has lower momentum but ~same speed (possibly a little faster- but similar arms and greater air drag means it's about the same). Be interested in your take on the matter- on what actually makes the difference.

While I have never participated in foam combat, if I were to participate I wouldn't be focused on the weight difference between foam and steel. My guess is the time difference between the two to complete a thrust or cut would be minimal. My focus instead would be on the no tell attack (cut or thrust), which significantly reduces the time your opponent has to react.

Quite an interesting video Rob, a lot of food for thought here. I would have thought that having one perfect, polished move , a move that, in the speed of the moment, can be executed without thought , would be the better answer. I see your point however. I guess I’ll just have to find more moves. Thanks for your advice!

So Bruce Lee was wrong. Practicing the same kick 1000 times is actually not something to fear, because you'll just get your leg broken when your opponent figures out that that's all you can do.

I think you misunderstand what Bruce Lee was talking about. Think of it this way, if it were otherwise, why would Bruce Lee have bothered to master so many techniques? What he was saying in his famous quote is that he does not fear anyone who practiced 10,000 kicks only one time. A person like that has no mastery of the technique--and probably more likely to hurt themselves if they try it in a fight. The other person, however, who practiced only one kick but 10,000 times will have a mastery of that technique. This person is much more likely to actually hurt you if it connects. Hence the reason Bruce said he would fear that person more than the other.
